Yes, this is the kind of stuff that most of us like to read about. It’s also the kind of stuff that makes a certain reader of my blog mad at me for simply ignoring the "oh wow!" factor of the iPhone.
Almost one year ago, when HTC announced the Touch, the blogosphere was filled with HTC Touch vs iPhone articles and comparisons. History is now repeating itself, with the blogosphere abuzz with Touch Diamond vs iPhone stuff. How could this blog be left behind?
Without wasting any more time, I now start this humble post. Note: I am comparing only the main features / specifications that are present in both the devices. You won’t find something like Touch Diamond has GPS while the iPhone doesn’t. Oops! You just did.
- Operating System
Touch Diamond: Runs on the latest version of Windows Mobile OS i.e Windows Mobile 6.1. Yes, we all know how finger-un-friendly Windows Mobile really is, but this time HTC has done a really good job of integrating its own interface with the OS and layering it on top of it. As we all know, the main feature is the Touch FLO 3D interface, which provides support for easy finger friendly phone navigation.
Apple iPhone: Runs on a special version of MAC OS X, and I must admit, it’s absolutely stunning. Apple had initially not provided any third party application support for the iPhone, but then released the SDK sometime later. - Memory
Touch Diamond: Comes with 192 MB of onboard RAM and 256 MB ROM. 192 MB of RAM is sufficient for running several applications simultaneously (and smoothly, lets not forget that). It goes without saying that running Skyfire on this one is not going to slow down the phone. Also, HTC has provided 4 GB of onboard storage memory with the Touch Diamond. As per what I’ve read online, it doesn’t feature an expansion slot, a first for a Windows Mobile device. In my opinion, this is a definite step backward.
Apple iPhone: Has 128 MB of RAM (as per whatever I have seen online), which is of course, a generous amount and seems to be enough for regular use. It comes in 2 flavours: 8 GB & 16 GB. Of course, no expansion slot here either, but 16 GB is a lot. - Display
Touch Diamond: Features a 2.8" VGA (480 x 640) display, which is extremely sharp and clear. HTC probably didn’t increase the size of the display screen, just to save on the dimensions of the device.
Apple iPhone: We all know that one of the many things that the iPhone is famous for is its 3.5" superb multi-touch display. However, it supports a resolution of 480 x 320. It is a known fact that Bigger screen + Lesser Resolution = Lesser Sharpness. At least theoretically, the screen of the iPhone is not as sharp as the Touch Diamond. It remains to be seen whether this fact is actually true. Methinks, it definitely is. - Connectivity
Touch Diamond: It’s almost like "you name it, its got it". Starting from the most basic - GPRS, EDGE, HSDPA (7.2 mbps download and 384 kbps upload), WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR. I hope I haven’t missed out any.
Apple iPhone: EDGE, Bluetooth (no EDR), WiFi. That’s about it. - Camera
Touch Diamond: 3.2 MegaPixels with Auto Focus (back) and a good old VGA Camera in the front for video calling.
Apple iPhone: 2 MegaPixels (no auto focus)
Nothing is known about the pricing of the Touch Diamond, but seeing HTC’s past record (at least here in India), I think it will be available for INR 35000+ unlocked (Note: This is pure speculation!). The Touch Cruise itself retails for INR 32,990 unlocked. The iPhone is already available in various countries, locked to their respective network operators. The 16 GB version will be available in mid-September for INR 19,960.
Of course, comparing a recently announced device with a device that’s almost one year old is simply not fair. But lets face it, we love to hear anything that’s even remotely related to HTC vs Apple!
Rest assured, the moment the next version of the iPhone (rumoured to be a 3G device) is announced, the Pocket PC Blogwill definitely carry something on the lines of "HTC Touch ??? vs Apple iPhone ???"
