Samsung i900 Omnia Announced
2008-06-09 12:40:54 by Vik in The Pocket PC Blog | News and Reviews from the Windows Mobile World

bigThe rumored Samsung i900 has finally been officially announced. It will now be referred to as the Samsung i900 Omnia.

This 3.2" WQVGA (not 3.5" as mentioned earlier) Windows Mobile 6.1 Touchscreen device has quite an impressive feature set. Also, like most new PDA phones being released these days, this one features a finger friendly touch interface too (TouchWiz). Now get this: the Omnia has a 5 Mega Pixels Auto Focus Camera with Face and smile detection, plus auto-panorama shot!! GSMArena reports that this device will be available in 8GB and 16GB variants, just like the iPhone. Samsung has provided a microSD slot in addition to the already generous internal memory, for further expanding its memory capacity. GPS with Geotagging has also been included in the feature set. Most PDA manufacturers have now started to include Accelerometers with their devices, and Samsung is no exception. The Omnia is a Quadband GSM/GPRS/EDGE device with support for HSDPA (7.2 mbps). FM Radio, Bluetooth (with A2DP), Wi-Fi and a USB port complete the highly impressive specs of this Pocket PC.

After seeing videos of HTC’s TouchFLO 3D, I am forced to compare any device that has an "enhanced touch interface", with the HTC Touch Diamond. After seeing the pic above, I think the HTC Touch Diamond’s Today Screen is fancier. I wonder how Samsung’s TouchWiz will fare against HTC TouchFLO 3D. I have a hunch that the TouchFLO 3D has more WOW-Potential, although I haven’t actually seen the TouchWiz Interface in action (Can anyone point me to a video clip?).

The Samsung i900 Omnia will be market available from June 2008 (Europe - July 2008), which also coincides with the projected availability of the new 3G iPhone.
