Before I say anything else, I’d like to apologize for the lack of posts for the past couple of months on a regular basis.. Simply put you’d not want to be in a situation I am in right now.. Screwed up college life, and personal life to a smaller extent, has made things a lot difficult for me..

I have become a lot more busier at college, after becoming the Vice President of the department which has added a whole new range of activities I am supposed to be doing.. Added to that, I have also been selected by Microsoft to become a Microsoft Student Partner on campus, wherein am expected to conduct technical sessions and other seminars on a regular basis.

Combine these two responsibilities with the bigger and more important responsibility that is of a student, things are kind of messed up for me at the moment.. The past month has gone completely in preparations for a major event in college, and am tired and exhausted while I leave for Goa today to attend a training program of sorts to be organized by Microsoft.

Once I come back, its a hectic week after that.. I am not making excuses here.. I just want to keep you guys in the loop on what’s happening over at dailyApps. Also to an extent I have hit the writers block, and whenever I sit down to write something the words simply don’t come out..

I cannot say when exactly dailyApps will come alive again, because College has got a lot busier than it ever was.. For me and my family my education and studies remains the primary concern, so its only natural I feel that blogging will suffer.. But trust me, I don’t like all this either.. I miss blogging daily on dailyApps, I miss reading your friendly and useful comments and I can’t wait to get back on the ship.

Hopefully in the coming weeks everything should be sorted out, and things should be back to normal.. Till then if you have any suggestions for me on how to manage time effectively I am all ears..

After all I’m just 19 and I have never before carried so much of responsibilities.. I am determined to make things work, which means you will see new posts on a regular basis pretty soon, and dailyApps will be the same active blog it was before.

Please stay tuned, the best of dailyApps is yet to come.. Cheers!!

Thank you all of you, for sticking around…

The Japanese division of Taiwanese computer and component manufacturer Asus is warning customers that shipping versions of its Eee Box B202 desktop computer are infected with a virus. According to Asus, the virus is located on the D drive in a file called recycled.exe. When the user opens the D drive, the virus is triggered and immediately starts copying itself onto the C drive and any connected USB media.

Why the virus is there, though, and how it got onto the disks, Asus is not saying. Nor will it comment if infected machines are shipping outside of Japan, although The Register has found a different infection on a UK unit.

Apart from its apologies, Asus is offering its customers assistance with the problem.

OK, I know that there are over 10 million faulty 360’s out there, but why 5 of them have to be mine?

Here are 2 links to my past experiences with my other 360’s:
xBox 360 number 4 will be gone soon
To play this game put it into a xBox 360 console

Yesterday evening i started up my 360 - which a few hours before that worked just fine - only to get the 4 rings of death.
If all quadrants are flashing red, then there is a problem with one of the cables, either the power brick one or the AV cable.
And so last night i went through the whole troubleshooting steps: powered down my 360, unplugged the cables, cleaned the metal head on the AV cable….tried again….and some more.
Today, my boyfriend got me a friend’s cables and tried them too but i got the same error.

Hold on now! This ain’t right! I looked again to it, but the up right quadrant didn’t flash. It appeared to be red though. Crap!

At some point my boyfriend said that i should call this one quit and call the support.

Oh dear! Again? To put me do the same steps i’ve done last night?
Right…Dialed the 0800 number, got the bla bla bla robot, press 3, press 3, press 1 and an apology. Huh?!

That’s new!
Since when has Microsoft introduced the apologetic robot and why?

To the person who’s been in charge with the whole 360 building and bringing it on the market process:

It may not be your fault that “someone” skipped the prevention process, and it’s really OK…no need to apologize. I forgive you and i forgive your robot too.
Lots of people do lots of mistakes. Huge ones. You’ve just made about 10 million of them. How cool and huge is that?!
I just want a damn working 360! So skip the whole apology thing and speed up the repair/swap process, will you!

And do you know what else pisses me off to bits about this whole thing? The fact that i have sent in for repairs 3 of them (1of 4was a swap thanks to the Gamemania dudes) and none of them have been registered in your system as “sent in for repairs”. They have been swapped.
Tricky! Very tricky!

When a 360 gets swapped (on purpose by Microsoft), and then another 2, there goes your chance to get your “So Sorry for the trouble 360″ from Microsoft along with some apologies and a 1 month Gold membership. Hm!

Back to the call…

A very friendly support guy, outside Belgium, took my call and asked me to go through the process i’ve just done last night.

“Done that”, i said. “It’s my 5th one.”

He then suggested to plug the console into another TV and see if the problem goes.
It didn’t! In the light of my bedroom i could actually see on 3 lights and the last one was dead which basically means: General Hardware Failure.

We’ve been on the phone for quite some time - apparently his system froze twice - and all this time he kept apologizing to the point where i really felt bad for him.
I just threw in some humor and made him laugh. One might say that this is typical me, but…these guys are taking lots of abuse from us - no wonder they keep apologizing so often - and they don’t deserve that; i just wanted to make his call a bit more bearable.

He then decided that my 360 qualifies for repairs and so it will be picked up withing a couple of days and i won’t be seeing it for a few good weeks.

Meanwhile i won’t use my PS3. No offense dear Sony, but your online service sucks.

So, till i have my 360 back, or someone else’s, i will just go on and learn how to Photoshop.

Anyway…

If you experience the rings of death, here’s what they mean and a hint to what you should do next:

4 quadrants flashing red : The AV cable is not detected or there is a problem with the power brick. Check the led on the brick and make sure it is green.
If the led is orange, then check: KB906102 .

3 quadrants flashing red: General Hardware Failure.
Check KB907534 or just call the Support.

2 quadrants are flashing red: Overheating.
Just let it cool for a few good hours and do not block the ventilation.
Do not put it in the freezer!
You might laugh or raise your eyebrow but there are people who have done so. Not very wise!

1 quadrant is flashing red: Hardware Failure.
This can be anything from the hard drive, DVD drive player and so on…

Check the error that your 360 shows on your screen and then call the Microsoft Support. Tell them the exact error number you are seeing.

If the error is known, then probably an update just killed your 360.

Here’s what you can do about this unknown one before calling in:
Clear the cache.
Power up and go to the Dashboard ->System -> Storage Devices.
Highlight your hard drive. Now press the following on your controller: Y, X, X, LB, RB, X, X.
The system will then ask you if you want to perform the maintenance.
By pressing the green button you agree to do the maintenance but be aware of the fact that all your patches, updates and game extensions will be deleted.
The best part is that you can download them again at any time.

Note:
It’s important to be prepared with all this before calling the support. It will save time and energy and the the person helping you will be able to quickly diagnose if you can fix your 360 by yourself or if you have to send it in.

Good luck now!

There are no real excuses, other than being totally swamped with various work on all fronts that we've been doing... and hopefully you'll be able to see them soon.

Now, what's new?

Installer 4.0b8 is out (it's been ready for a while and even included in the last PwnageTool but we were holding off to releasing it publically). Among notable features is the switch to libcurl from the stock Foundation URL loading classes, which means more lightweight CPU and memory footprint and, more importantly, resumable file transfers. The new beta also features a plethora of little fixes which we won't extensively list here. Enjoy. We'll be pushing out a 4.0 release soonish...

The featured page you see when you launch Installer is actually automatically generated based on the popularity of the packages (based on the number of installations across the board), so it's nothing like the "old" featured page that listed a set of pre-defined products. It will eventually have some "sponsored" products, but they will be easily distinguishable visually and we'll try to keep the amount of these to the minimum - no more than 3.

Community Sources are updated as well to reflect the change in the modmyi.com domain name and to remove some outdated sources that shown promise but actually never delivered anything.

Kate update been out for a while, and we're finally at adding new features to it - so look for a non-bugfix release in the near future.

If you're a software publisher and would like to be hosted in Installer - please let us know and we'll do all the work for creating proper install scripts and hosting on our server (which has a few spare terabytes of bandwidth).

Moreover, thank you for staying with us and supporting us along the way - it couldn't been done without you!
-----

This blog will tell you how to Unlock Jailbreak Activate and Hack your iPhone and iTouch firmware for FREE

This tutorial will guide you every step of the way through installing PC-BSD 7 in VMware Fusion (version 2.0).

Note: Yes, I put this in the Linux category on Simple Help. PC-BSD is not a Linux distribution, but I don’t have a BSD/Unix category, and I’m not sure I’ll be doing enough BSD/Unix tutorials to justify one. Please accept my apologies in advance if this offends you.

First, make sure you have VMware Fusion 2.0 installed on your Mac. You can download a 30 day trial if you don’t already own a copy.

Second, download PC-BSD. I opted for the DVD “Complete Install + Optional Components”, so that’s the version used in this tutorial.

Once you’ve downloaded PC-BSD, burn the .iso to a DVD. Alternately, you can just boot from the .iso in VMware, so you don’t need to ‘waste’ a DVD if you decide PC-BSD isn’t for you. This tutorial will show you how to start PC-BSD using both methods.

Now, startup VMware Fusion. Click the New button to create a new Virtual Machine.

If you’ve burned PC-BSD to a DVD, make sure the DVD is inserted into your DVD drive. If VMware doesn’t immediately recognize that you have a DVD in the drive (or you’re going to boot from the .iso), don’t worry. On the initial screen, click Continue, or if that’s unavailable, click Continue without disk.

Now VMware should recognize that the PCBSD DVD is in your DVD drive. If that’s the method you opted for (you’ve burned the image to a DVD) make sure Use operating system installation disk: is selected, and click Next. If you’re using the .iso file (didn’t burn it to DVD) select Use operating system installation disk image file:, select Other from the drop-down list, navigate to the PC-BSD .iso file, select it and click Open. Then click Next to continue.

Select Other as the Operating System and then FreeBSD as the Version. Click Next.

At this point, if you’re happy with the virtual hard drive size (8GB) and amount of memory allocated to PC-BSD (256MB by default), you’re done setting up VMware. You may want to remove the check mark from the Always open this virtual machine when VMware Fusion starts, particularly if you use VMware Fusion to run multiple operating systems. Click Finish and skip down to step #x below.

If you’d like to change the default hard drive and/or memory sizes, click the Customize Settings button.

You’ll save the settings for this virtual machine, so give it a name (I left mine as the default, FreeBSD, but something like PC-BSD 7 would have been more accurate). Click Save.

From here you can customize a number of the settings for this virtual machine.

Click the Processors & RAM button. I opted to increase the amount of RAM dedicated to PC-BSD from 256MB to 512MB. This change is entirely up to your personal preference. If you only have 1GB of RAM in your Mac, you may want to keep the default of 256. If you have 4GB+, you might want to go as high as 1GB. Click the Show All button to return to the main settings.

Click the Hard Disks button if you want to allocate more than 8GB of disk space to PC-BSD. When you’re done, close out of the settings window. From the Virtual Machine Library screen, click the “play” (start) button next to your PC-BSD entry.

PC-BSD will boot up.

On the Welcome to PC-BSD! screen, hit the 1 key on your keyboard, or just wait for the countdown to finish.

A bunch of text will fly by, and PC-BSD will set up a ramdisk and copy the setup image to it. This can take a minute or two.

Once the setup image has been copied, PC-BSD will run a check on your installer archive. Though you can skip this step, it’s not recommended. Again, this process can take a couple of minutes.

Finally, you’ll be presented with the first PC-BSD Installation screen. Select your System Language, Keyboard Layout and Timezone. Click Next.

Review the License Agreement and assuming you agree, place a check in the I agree box. Click Next.

On the Select installation choice screen, leave the defaults (Fresh Install, Desktop Edition and Install from CD/DVD/USB) selected. Yet again, click Next.

Now you’ll need to set the Administrative (root) password for PC-BSD. Enter it in the provided fields. You’ll also want to add your first user to PC-BSD. Enter the required info in each box, and then click the Add button.

You can add additional users here if you’d like (you can always add more once PC-BSD has been installed as well). If you want to auto-login with the user you just created, place a check in the Auto-login User (The first user listed will be logged on automatically) box. Click Next.

Select your virtual hard drive from the Detected Hard Drives list, place a check both the Use entire disk and Install the PC-BSD bootloader boxes. Remember - you’re installing PC-BSD to a virtual environment. This won’t erase or alter your OS X files in any way at all. And now, you guessed it, click Next.

Now select the not-required System Components you want to include with your PC-BSD installation. Just highlight the one(s) you want to include, and click the “down arrow” to move the software into the Selected Components box. Anything you don’t install now can always be added later. Click Next to continue.

Finally! It’s time for the installation. For the very last time, click Next.

Go grab yourself a cup of coffee or the beverage of your choice. PC-BSD doesn’t take that long to install, but it’s about as much fun to watch as paint drying.

After the installation has completed, VMware will eject your DVD (unless you installed from the .iso file directly) and reboot PC-BSD.

Again you’ll see a similar Welcome to PC-BSD! screen, and again, click the 1 key or just wait for the countdown to finish.

Before everything starts up, you’ll be asked what screen resolution, color depth and video driver ou want to use. Leave the defaults (they can be changed later) and click Apply.

Click Yes when asked if you want to keep the resolution.

PC-BSD will start up, and you’re done! Assuming your Mac is connected to the Internet, PC-BSD should be as well. Click around, explore for a while, and have fun!

While you’re using PC-BSD, or when you suspend/exit, you’ll probably be prompted to install VMware Tools. Though it’s not necessary, it does make working with PC-BSD and OS X a bit easier (you can seamlessly move your cursor from one OS to the other without having to click CMD + Apple Key etc).

I spent the last week or so in Florida and loved every minute of it. While I was there I was taking a look in Best Buy at the MP3 players and considered replacing my old Zune with the new blue one. I was then reminded of problems I had a few months ago trying to get my current Zune repaired.

I bought the Zune 30Gb while I was in New York last summer and had no problems with it for the first few months. Then one morning I plugged it into charge and nothing happened. I tried resets and everything with no luck so I eventually decided to give Microsoft a ring. Now bare in mind that I live outside the US and the Zune isn’t supported here but also remember that you’re talking about an MP3 player with a 3% market share and a company with a base in Ireland. So I gave them a ring and after a few minutes of describing and re-describing the issue to a support rep he told me that the Zune needed fixed and I could post it from my home. However they won’t post it back. They’ll happily fix it as it’s still in warranty but I have to get a US postal address in order to get it it back. I was even willing to pay postage on it but they were having none of it. This leaves me with a $200+ paper weight!

So this brings me back to last week and Best Buy. If I had picked up the nice shiny Zune and it had failed me, again, I wasn’t going to get any help from Redmond. So why should I bother? Well I didn’t. The Zune remained on the Best Buy shelf with so many others and I walked out with a Nintendo DS instead. While I understand what “not supported” means it would be a nice gesture if Microsoft could give the supporters of their device some sort of help when they’re outside the US. After all if they had been able to help a few months ago they would’ve gained an extra sale they now don’t have.

Technorati Tags: Zune,Microsoft,Nintendo

Apologies: Sometimes we forget to provide a monthly update on the fortunes of the radio business. But we think that's mainly because the monthly updates we do provide have a depressingly repetitious: Decline, decline, decline. MediaDailyNews:

Radio revenue is expected to drop 8% to 9% in August, according to veteran radio analyst Jim Boyle of C.L. King and Associates--making it the 16th straight month to see radio revenues decline. The consensus on Wall Street is for a 9% decline, according to Boyle, who wrote that radio "seems stuck in a new, discouraging territory," bedeviled by a secular downturn and worsening economy working in tandem.

... Like other "traditional" media, big radio groups have recently pinned their hopes on rapid growth in Internet radio revenues. However, it still contributes only a small part of total radio revenues

According to the Radio Advertising Bureau, "off-air" revenues--which include Internet radio--grew 10% to $501 million in the second quarter of 2008. However, that's just 9% of the total $5.36 billion. And the amount of revenue added by Internet radio in the second quarter ($45 million) is dwarfed by the amount lost overall ($343 million).

In the iTunes 8 new features listing, a couple of tweaks may have been overlooked. Podcast subscribers have long yearned for more granular control over downloading and retention in iTunes -- "keep three episodes" might be great for Wait Wait, Don't Tell Me or Mac OS Ken, but what about Coverville or You Look Nice Today? You'd surely want to keep those & other awesome 'casts in perpetuity, and there are some podcasts that are so large you want to cull them after one download.

Now, iTunes 8 lets you apply retention policies on a podcast-by-podcast basis. Select the podcast in the list and click the "Settings" button at the bottom of the window, then UNcheck the "Use Default Settings" box to enable custom prefs for that particular show. Dee-lightful! Unfortunately, podcast-to-iPod sync settings are still one for all and all for one, but this is a step in the right direction.

Update: Comments below (and a visit to the Wayback Machine) have confirmed that the territorial clause in the iTunes store TOS is not a new addition with v8, but has in fact been in place for quite some time. It's interesting that it only came up as a topic of discussion now -- perhaps because everyone was forced to reaccept the TOS with the new version, and read it a bit more carefully? It's also looking like the clause was displayed front and center on the new TOS acceptance screen; this degree of prominence seems to be new, and probably attracted attention to the pre-existing restriction. In any case, our apologies for the error.

Speaking of minor changes that might have major implications, a number of readers have expressed concern about something that Robert originally pointed out in his rundown of iTunes 8: that the iTunes store terms of service (long a source of controversy in Europe) <del>now include</del> have long included a clause restricting use to the geographic area where the user's account is established. In the US the rule reads:

10. Territory. The Service is available only in the United States. You agree not to use or attempt to use the Service from outside of the available territory, and that Apple may use technologies to verify your compliance.

There are several classes of users who might run afoul of this restriction: travelers who shop in their home stores while venturing abroad, for example, would technically be in violation... but our suspicion is that these casual, intermittent border-busters are not what Rule 10 is about. Instead, any enforcement of this restriction is likely to be aimed at users who live in one country and establish an iTunes store account in another -- allowing them to buy TV shows or movies that may not be available yet (or ever) in their localities.

Certainly the content providers who sell their wares through iTunes may choose not to sell their programs to a particular region at a particular time; that's their prerogative. It seems somewhat myopic, however, to think that enforcing restrictions by geography in the iTunes store will have any effect other than to drive revenue and customers from the quasi-legal market firmly into the rip-and-download underground.

Thanks to Eric & Mark

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
