The registry particularly can make customization easy and definitely fun. Today, we will be looking at just a few registry tweaks that can increase your ability to customize Windows to an extreme level.

WARNING : BEFORE making any changes to the Windows registry, it is highly recommended to make a backup in case anything goes wrong. To backup your Windows registry, tap your Windows key on the keyboard and “R”. When the Run box comes up, type regedit. When the Registry box comes up, go to ‘File’ then ‘Export’. Save the resulting file to your hard drive.

Lets get started!

Become Your Own Computer Manufacturer

It is common for computers to come with information about the manufacturer in Start Menu under the “Run” entry. Wouldn’t it be cool, though, to be your own computer manufacturer?

Well, it is possible with Windows! Let’s do it then:

    1. Open Notepad (”Start,” “Run,” notepad.exe)

    2. Copy the following into it:

    3. Change the following values to whatever you like:

    TITLE HERE - Add the text that you want to be shows, ex. John’s PC

    ICON HERE - The image that is used as a brand logo. It must be a .ico and 24×24. (E.g. C:\\mylogo.ico. The \ has to be replaced by two \\’s.)

    FUNCTION HERE - This should be replaced with the function that will be used when clicked. (E.g. A website, a windows executable, etc. http://google.com will redirect to Google when clicked.)

    4. Save the file as brand.reg and double-click it. Now, simply log off and back on and you should have your own branded version of Windows!

 

Create Your Own Run Command

I talk a lot about Windows, and using the “Run” command is a large part of it. It is a simple and easy method of accessing applications quickly. If you happen to want to make a shortcut to an application your own way, guess what, you can! Let’s do it:

1. Go to “Start,” “Run,” (Told you we use it a lot) and type regedit.
2. Navigate to the following:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Apps Path
3. Create a new folder/key under Apps Path. (Right-Click Apps Path and click “New,” “Key.”)
4. Title the new folder/key the name of the application, e.g. firefox.exe.
5. Right-Click the default string value (the thing automatically created in your new folder) and click Modify.
6. Change the value to the path of the executable you are attempting to run. E.g. C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe.
7. Create a new “String Value” by right-clicking under the default value (the thing we just edited) and select “New,” “String Value.” Name it Path and enter the value as the same path you previously entered.
8. Done! Now, all you need to do is go to “Start,” “Run,” and type the name of your command!

Change Menu Delay

The MenuShowDelay registry key sets a delay for different menus. This registry key is one of the most useless keys in Windows. If, for some reason, you want your start menu to delay for 900 milli-seconds, then you do not need to mess with this at all. If you do, though, want to speed up your computer just a little more then here is how you lower the menu delay:

1. Go to “Start,” “Run,” and type regedit.
2. Navigate to the following:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop
3. Find the key labeled “MenuShowDelay” and right-click, then click Modify.
4. Change the value to whatever you like. (The range is 0-999 in milliseconds.)

Aria2 is for Linux, however Windows and Mac ports are available. It supports downloads in HTTP/HTTPS/FTP/BitTorrent/Metalink protocols. Although it is a command line utility, don’t let it scare you off because there are some GUI’s available that provide a graphical interface to aria2.  It is feature rich and not only that but it has some unique features that are not easy to find elsewhere.

Let’s see some of them :

Download files from multiple sources and protocols

Not only does aria2 support multiple protocols, it also lets you download the same file from different sources/protocols. Let’s say you want to download the Ubuntu Intrepid Beta. Such files are an excellent candidate to try aria2 on because you generally have the files mirrored on different servers, plus the file is sufficiently large enough to notice speed differences with aria2. So you would give the following command:

aria2c http://server/yourfile http://server/yourfile

You are not limited to 2 servers - you can add more if you like to the command above. Not only this, you are also not limited to a single protocol. This means that if one of the links is an http link and the other is a ftp link, you can still use them to download segments using aria2. Just throw in the appropriate protocol in the command like:

aria2c http://server/yourfile ftp://server/yourfile

You can even take it a step further by adding bittorrent to the equation. Of course you will have to do some searching to find the torrent for the exact file, this is generally not an issue with ISOs of distros and similar files. Nevertheless check out this Make Use Of article for searching torrents.

Some handy usage options:

There are a myriad of useful options and features offered by aria2.  However I would like to mention only some of the cooler ones that I think would be useful to all:

  • BitTorrent Download

aria2c http://site/yourfile.torrent

  • BitTorrent Download (torrent yourfile present locally)

aria2c –max-upload-limit=40K yourfile.torrent

  • Repair damaged downloads (only for bitTorrent and metalink)

aria2c –check-integrity=true yourfile.metalink

  • Run in background
  • Download/upload speed throttling

aria2c –max-download-limit=100K http://server/yourfile

  • BitTorrent extensions: Fast extension, DHT, PEX, MSE/PSE, Multi-Tracker
  • Quickly specify multiple urls

aria2c -P http://{server1,server2,server3}/yourfile

aria2c -Z -P http://server/image[000-100].png (to download multiple sequentially named yourfiles)

  • Verify downloaded files
  • Being a command line utility you can use it effectively to automate tasks
  • Concurrent downloads of multiple files
  • HTTP proxy and authentication support
    • Oh you just want to download a file plain and easy? Sorry, forgot about you ^ ^, but here you go

    aria2c http://server/yourfile

    Or in case you are hungry for more and want to know about all the things aria2 can do, I would suggest you RTFM ( I what? )

    Graphical Frontends

    If the whole command line scanario scares the crap out of you, no need to be disappointed, have a look at the graphical frontends to the command. Yeah they allow you to specify files and options graphically and a little more intuitively.  They then would generate the appropriate options for the command and invoke aria2 with those options. If that’s the way you like it so be it!

    timecapsule Many of you probably remember TimeCapsule, an application that allows you to back up your iPhone, from firmware 1.1.4 and below. Well, it is now available for firmware 2.0+ however it has a new name. It is now called Chronus. The icon is the same and the application itself looks and functions much the same as before. You are able to back-up Stock, Cydia and App Store applications (Documents folder). The application list is a little limited at the moment and the ability to backup your Contacts is missing. But, the developer is working on both of these things and we should see some good updates in the future. The app reminds me a lot of the first releases of TimeCapsule but I know we will see more features soon.
