Some questions

Are competitions regularly held? Is it possible to collaborate with other artists via the website?

What it does

The Zeros2Heroes social network has been created by Zeros 2 Heroes Media, a Canadian social media company. This network has the objective of forming bridges between creators, producers and fans of comic books and revolutionizing the comics’ industry and the way comics are created and reach the general public.

Those who sign up and become registered users can employ the latest Web 2.0 tools not only to showcase their works but also to rate and comment on other users’ pieces and engage in conversation with other comics artists.

The main page of the site includes an “Artist’s Corner” that acts as a launching platform for newcomers. This part of the site includes a comprehensive gallery that can be consulted anytime along with a sort of mini-resume and a list of fun facts about the artist in question.

The campaigns that are being promoted by Zeros 2 Heroes are likewise advertised under the relevant heading, whereas awards and ratings can be consulted whenever you wish. A newsletter is provided as well, and you can sign up for free by furnishing your e-mail address when prompted.

Why it might be a killer

It is an excellent launching pad for upcoming comics artists.

In their own words

“Zeros 2 Heroes Media, the “People’s Publisher”, is a Vancouver-based social media company best known for creating Zeros2Heroes.com, a thriving social network that connects thousands of creators, producers and fans of comics in a collaborative and creative environment.”

Link: http://live.zeros2heroes.com
Our Review: http://www.killerstartups.com/Web20/live-zeros2heroes-com-discover-new-comics-artists

With the shape of the economy and ever changing gas prices, online shopping may end up growing even faster than some have predicted. If your business hasn’t added an online shopping cart yet, why not? The technology has been around for years now, and there are solutions for just about every skill level: you can do it yourself, outsource the work, pay companies for hosting, or even turn a WordPress blog into a simple shopping cart using plugins. Here are over 35 shopping cart solutions for your business.

Does your company already use a shopping cart solution? Tell us about your experience with it in the comments.

Hosted Carts

AAcart.com - Offers three levels of pricing plans that come with hosting included. Also offers customized solutions and design.

eCrater.com - A free online store builder that also allows you to enter your products into their marketplace for free, while also entering them into the Google Product Search.

Etsy.com - An online store builder and marketplace that restricts itself to products that you make. This include all sorts of arts & crafts, buttons, clothes and so on.

GoEmerchant.com - GoEmerchant offers both fully hosted options and the ability to just add buttons to your already existing site.

Merchandizer.com - Merchandizer offers hosted packages from extremely basic all the way up to your own fully dedicated hosting. Also offers design and logo services if you need them.

NetworkSolutions.com - The well-known domain registration company also offers online storefront hosting and setup.

SmallBusiness.Yahoo.com - While Yahoo offers you the ability to use their shopping cart on a site you build yourself, their wizard powered store is by far their most popular product. It offers you pre-built templates for the look, but uses their own brand of HTML, which makes hiring a designer for a unique look almost a necessity.

StoreFront.net - Focuses on customized solutions that vary by store size, hosting needs and so on.

Stores.eBay.com - eBay stopped being just an auction site a long time ago and offers you the chance to set up your own storefront on their popular site.

Free Self-Hosted Carts

CubeCart - CubeCart offers version 3 of their software for free, but charges for version 4 after a free 30 day trial. Offers bulk upload, inventory management, shipping modules and everything else you would expect from a fully operational online store.

Ecommerce Shopping Cart Software - A fairly new free shopping cart that puts a heavy emphasis on not having to know how to code, run databases or anything else.

IdeaCart - A free cart still in its Alpha phase, features fraud detection, newsletter support and more.

JadaSite - JadaSite is a bit unusual in that it’s Java based, as well as fully integrated with a content management system.

Magento - Launched in 2008, Magento is one the newest open source shopping carts on the market.

OpenCart - An open source PHP shopping cart. It’s been a while since it has been updated, but everything appears to still be up and running.

osCommerce - One of the best known shopping carts out there, this open source cart enjoys a large community of plugin creators. It has been quite a while since their last major release, v2.2 RC 2a, but they are in active development of version 3.0, which promises some major administration upgrades.

PrestaShop - An extremely new open source shopping cart that already seems fairly full-featured, and promises more to come with an area for expansion modules to be opened in the near future.

Quick.Cart.Lite - Quick.Cart.Lite is the free version of the Quick.Cart software and will allow you to build a simple online store. Offers two more robust levels of the same program with more features.

Satchmo - Built on the Django framework, Satchmo offers highly customizable shop building with a long list of built in features such as Google Analytics incorporation, PDF invoice generation and more.

Ubercart - Ubercart is a full-featured shopping cart that also integrates with a Drupal site so that you can build a community around your store or featured products.

VirtueMart - A shopping cart built specifically for integration with the Joomla! and Mambo content management system.

Zen Cart - Zen Cart is an off branch of osCommerce that comes with several of the most popular modules built into it.

Purchasable Self-Hosted Carts

1ShoppingCart - 1ShoppingCart offers you the ability to add “Buy Now” buttons to your already existing site, while offering you many of the features you expect from complete shopping carts.

A Canadian tech school with an apple logo was sent a letter from Apple lawyers, claiming the school’s green and blue symbol violates Apple’s trademark.

It won’t settle the lawsuit, but they’re posting the legal letter, news reports and a poll asking people what they think.

Over 6,000 people have voted, about 75% of voters in favor of the school.

Lawyers aside, The Victoria School of Business and Technology could probably benefit from a better-looking design.

What do you think?

Twittertise lets you schedule Twitter messages in advance to go out at a specified time -- handy for companies that want to cue up PR-approved messages ahead of time; and track traffic to links you send on Twitter through Bit.ly, a URL shortener.

How's it doing? Founder Jon Steinberg, a manager at Google (GOOG) in New York, says his project -- which he runs as a hobby -- has already attracted some 570 users, including 380 who've logged in during the last month. None of them are paying him a penny.

Among them: Neat services like the Atlanta Beer Guide. And some impressive, big companies, like Publisher's Clearing House, ice cream chain Baskin-Robbins, publicly held travel site Travelzoo (TZOO) and Canadian telecom giant Nortel (NT).

How do they like it? Nortel's Bo Gowan, via email: "In short, Twittertise helps me validate the time and effort required to have a corporate Twitter program. With corporate blogging and new media, if you can't measure it, you can't sell it to your management... I had been using Twittertise for tweets about half the time, but the new graphing tool makes it that much more valuable, and I'll be using it every time for any tweets with links."

More important, perhaps, if Steinberg ever plans to make a business out of Twittertise: With a few more features, like more complete tracking/graphing, and the ability to export data, Nortel's Gowan would even be willing to pay for the service.

Email is not a secure service . Even if you use a secure transport like HTTPS or SSL to access your mail, once you messages leave your provider's mail server they travel unencrypted over the Internet...

Email is not a secure service. Even if you use a secure transport like HTTPS or SSL to access your mail, once you messages leave your provider's mail server they travel unencrypted over the Internet to the recipient's mail server. For this reason you really should not use email to send credit card numbers, SSNs or confidential personal or business information in regular email. Messages can be intercepted and read by employers, ISPs, government agencies and hackers. Fax or even a voice phone call is significantly safer but still subject to eavesdropping particularly by telephone service providers and the government.

Secure email is possible only if messages are encrypted by the sender and decrypted by the recipient using something like OpenPGP, BouncyCastle or GNU Privacy Guard. These tools are somewhat cumbersome to use and require both sender and recipient to have the encryption package installed on their PC. These tools are also not available for most mobile phones. However there is an alternative that's relatively easy to use, secure web mail. The oldest (since 1997) and largest secure web mail provider Hushmail.com, recently launched a mobile web based version of their product at m.hushmail.com.

In order to use HushMail's mobile email you first have to sign up for their regular web mail at hushmail.com. Sign pp is fast and easy. There three HushMail plans, Free, Premium and Business.

The free account is limited to 2MB of email storage. Free accounts must be accessed at least every three weeks or they will be deleted. Every time you log into a free account on the full web you have to dismiss a prompt to sign up for the Premium Plan before you reach your inbox. Thankfully the free mobile web version doesn't do that.

The Premium account is $34.95/year and raises the storage limit to 250MB, lets you use HushMail from OutLook, Mac OS Mail and Thunderbird and removes the every three week log in restriction.

Business accounts let you use you own domain for secure email and start at $2/month/user after a $9.95 setup fee. There are additional optional charges for Outlook/Thunderbird/Mac OS Mail access, increased storage and various administrative services.

Using Hushmail is as easy as any web mail product. Sending an encrypted email to another Hushmail is a matter of checking an "Encrypted" box when composing the message. As both sender and recipient log into Hushmail to access their mail, encryption and decryption happens behind the scenes with no user intervention. Sending and receiving unencrypted emails with anyone using Hushmail requires no extra steps either. If you want to sent an encrypted email to a non Hushmail user, you are prompted to enter a challenge question and response. When the recipient opens the encrypted email they actually see a message informing them that there is an encrypted email from you waiting for them at Hushmail along with a message specific URL. When they visit that URL, they are prompted with the challenge question, if they answer it correctly they see the message and can send an encrypted reply without any additional log in.

The mobile Hushmail interface is clean and lean and loads rapidly in even the most basic mobile browsers. It's fairly full-featured too with mass tag and delete and the ability to move individual emails to folders, although you can't create new folders with the mobile version. Attachments are supported on mobile, however, unlike with mobile gMail, Word and PDF documents aren't converted to plain text to be readable on any phone. If your phone has a PDF or Word reader that's fine, otherwise you are out of luck. Usability is fairly good, the main drawback is the need to enter your full Hushmail email address including the '@' sign along with your passphrase every time you visit Hushmail mobile. Hushmail does not set a persistent cookie so you have to log in every time. It doesn't help that when you sign up for Hushmail you are urged to make your passphrase much longer and more complex than an ordinary password. I understand that the lack of persistent log in and long ID and passphrase enhance security but they also make logging in much harder than with other mobile web mail services like gMail. The other thing I don't like about Mobile Hushmail is that it turns URLs in messages into plain text so they aren't click-able. This is a pet peeve of mine although it may not be an issue for most people.

Hushmail and it's mobile version are a great way to do secure email with a minimum of inconvenience. While I'm sure none of my readers would do anything illegal, Hushmail warns that you may not be protected if you use HushMail for email related to any activity which is illegal in either your home country, your recipient's country or Canada, where Hushmail is based. Hushmail must respond to valid Canadian court orders including international court orders from countries that have a mutual assistance treaty with Canada. In fact HushMail cooperated recently with US authorities to turn over decrypted emails in a case involving the sale of illegal anabolic steroid drugs.

I don’t agree with Michael Moore over much, but for all his many jarring viewpoints, I find his approach to copyright and digital media surprisingly modern and refreshing. As Stan noted last month, Michael Moore decided to release the somewhat stale movie Slacker Uprising for free via download on the Internet:

“This is being done entirely as a gift to my fans,” Moore said. “The only return any of us are hoping for is the largest turnout of young voters ever at the polls in November. I think Slacker Uprising will inspire million (sic) to get off the couch and give voting a chance.”

Of course, once it was released to the wilds of the web, it made its way very quickly to international torrenting websites like The Pirate Bay. Unlike DVDs and most corporate video distribution websites, there are no regional restrictions. This doesn’t seem like a particularly big deal at first blush, but when you take into account, as TorrentFreak says today, that Michael Moore only owns the distribution rights for the Uniteds States and Canada, it becomes clear that there might be a flaw in this plan.

They had noted that this potential set of circumstances seemed obvious to them, but wondered if it was intentional or accidental by Moore. He responded today.

“What do you think I’m up to? I know it may not be obvious to most, but I think you guys get it,” Moore wrote to us. “I only own the US and Canadian rights. So my hands are tied. But this is the 21st century. What are ‘geographical rights’ ?” Moore continued. “I’ll say it for the hundredth time: If I buy a book and read it, and then give you the book to read, I have broken no laws. Why is that not true for all media?”

He went on to express that he’s looking for folks to pick up on this fact (and perhaps a fight with the international copyright holders?). He might not get one, in this case. Slacker Uprising isn’t the shockwave-inducing film that Fahrenheit 9/11 was, and isn’t really as relevant to those residing outside the United States as to those inside. For these reasons, it’s less likely that there will be a copyright fight here than under normal circumstances.

I do, however, admire the sentiment expressed here. While this was incredibly safe ground for Moore to use, it all has to start somewhere, and bringing some scrutiny on the absurdity of copyright rules in the digital age is an admirable goal.
