An often-blurry QuickTime spy video of what appears to be an aluminum MacBook enclosure is available now on apple.pro. (If the video link isn't working, try watching it on YouTube; there are stills available here.)

The video is a series of close-up shots, none showing the thickness of the enclosure, nor the keyboard. The only features visible in the video are the new location for the power button, and a larger trackpad. Its authenticity could not be independently verified.

Yesterday, apple.pro had photos of what appears to be the same enclosure. Is it the new MacBook? We'll see on October 14.

http://www.electronista.com/article...dpi.2.inch.lcd/

"Casio on Thursday unveiled what it says is the sharpest display yet and took significant steps towards making HD video possible on mobile devices. Although measuring just two inches diagonally, the display uses a new hyper amorphous silicon LCD with an extremely small pixel structure and 15.5 micron dot pitch that lets Casio produce a 960x540 resolution. The output is a full quarter that of 1080p HD and results in an extremely dense 546 dots per inch, generating a near print-like quality to the final image."

On mobile devices, screen resolution really matters - anyone that has gone from a QVGA (320 x 240) screen to a VGA (640 x 480) screen can tell you that. On digital cameras, when DSLRs went from 230,000 pixel displays up to 920,000 pixel displays, there was a huge improvement in how easy it was to review your photos and see real details. PPI, which stands for "pixels per inch", is a basic measurement of how many pixels there are on a screen to draw something - and it's often confused with DPI, which is a measurement related to printing. On an average 22 inch computer monitor, for instance, the display resolution will be 1680 x 1050 - which gives you a PPI of only 90. The Zune 8 has a 1.8 inch screen with a resolution of 240 x 320 - which gives it 222ppi.

The higher the PPI, the more pixels there are to draw every item on the screen, and hence the better everything tends to look. Anything over 200 ppi tends to look fantastic, and the printed page has been said to be around 300ppi, so the idea of a 546ppi screen is simply mind-boggling. However, the more pixels, the more effort is needed to push and display those pixels - so the question of power consumption and processing requirements remain. Still, this is significant development that bodes well for a number of portable devices.

You already know it. Imation Apollo Pro WX might be the first to offer a USB hard drive that is completely wireless expect for the power cord. :D . Speedwise the wireless Apollo Pro WX is expect to match the wired ones.

The Apollo Pro WX will use Seagate hard drives and will come in a variety of sizes upto maximum capacity of 1.5TBs. Talking about convenience, the wireless hard drive solution has a total range of about 30 feet, meaning you won’t need to stroll to get your pictures. Hey but we all don’t have USB wireless in our computers, so they even included a USB port and cable for those who haven’t made the switch.

While Imation didn’t disclosed price tag, they were also mute about the release date, maybe just in time for the holiday season.

Well, it looks like they've finally flipped the switch because the service is now live.

Much like iTunes, they're selling TV shows as well as offering movies for purchase and rent. Unlike iTunes, it's a streaming rather than a download service. Fortunately, they've got a number of free videos which will give you a sense of the quality of the service (which requires Flash).

Frankly, I'm a big fan of Amazon MP3, so it's good to see Amazon getting into the video business as well to put a little more competitive pressure on iTunes. I'm doubtful, however, that it will really affect the iTunes juggernaut.

[via electronista]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Affected areas included Illinois, Massachusetts, New York, Rhode Island, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Missour, with reports confirming that the problem affected all AT&T customers.

AT&T has since commented on the outage, informing customers that service has now been fully restored to all affected areas.

“There was a routing issue affecting some wireless data use in the Northeast region. AT&T technicians determined the cause and restored service at 11:56AM EDT. Voice calling, text messaging and BlackBerry e-mail were unaffected.”

If you are in the market for a non-iPhone cellphone that has the features/look of an iPhone, then look no further than this iPhone clone. Unlike the Instinct, this cellphone could very well be the real iPhone killer. According to Electronista, the device could be running a hacked version of Windows Mobile, however, it mimics most of the iPhone's features, right down to the music player. Either way, it's still fun to watch, and to see how long Apple takes to sue them.

Back in April, Psystar went public with the first commercial Hackintosh clones. For US$554, they'd send you a Core 2 Duo minitower with Mac OS X preinstalled. In June, they released rack-mount servers with Leopard Server preinstalled in both 1U (starting $1599) and 2U (starting $1999) configurations.

Last July, the inevitable happened and Apple filed a lawsuit against Psystar citing copyright infringement, and demanded that they recall all machines. Psystar responded by acquiring legal representation from Carr & Ferrell, who previously settled with Apple in another case.

Still with us? Good. This week, Psystar seems to be preparing to countersue Apple, citing anticompetitive business practices. Specifically, the suit alleges that Apple's practice of restricting OS X to Apple hardware is "...an anticompetitive restraint of trade."

We think that's a stretch, but this story sure is fun to follow. We'll keep you updated as soon as anything changes. If you want a claim-by-claim breakdown of Apple's suit against Psystar, check out Nilay Patel's full accounting over at Engadget.

[Via Electronista]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

It looks as though Amazon’s Kindle is going to turn out to be more of a success and a moneymaker than many people ever expected. It will be if what CitiGroup analyst Mark Mahaney says is correct. He says that in 2008, Amazon will sell about 380,000 units which is about double of what he originally said would sell. He also compared this to equal the number of iPods that sold during the first year after they were released. Could the Kindle be Amazon’s iPod?

With more units expected to sell, this means an increase in revenue. Mahoney says that by 2010, if sales continue as expected, the Kindle could generate $1.1 billion which translates out to about 4% of all of Amazon’s business. Earlier this year he estimated weaker revenue of $750 million. In the three months leading up to the holiday season this Winter alone, Mahoney says that about 150,000 Kindle units will ship. Not bad!

Up until the Kindle, other companies who have tried to come out with an e-book reader haven’t had much luck. It looks as though Amazon just might have come up with just the right product to be the king of e-book readers…

Electronista reports on a patent filing for an iPhone/iPod touch dock that could allow you to both charge and play video in landscape mode, simultaneously. The patent was filed on September 5, 2007 -- near the time of the iPod touch debut. The so-called "dock" looks more like the tiny holder that ships with the iPod touch, with the exception of a dock connector plugged in.

Apple does, however, file patents that it might not ever use -- as do most other companies. What do you think? Could this be a new dock design, or is it the patent for the included iPod touch stand?

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Now that the 3G iPhone is out, the plans have been updated. Original iPhone customers can still get it for $40, but the 3G crowd is going to have to pony up another Hamilton, bringing the total to $50 per month (Enterprise customers can get the plan for $65). Both plans charge 40 cents per minute for voice calls and include Visual Voicemail.

To be eligible for the plans customers have to complete AT&T's disability certification forms (PDF link). These plans are apparently only available on the iPhone.

[via electronista]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
