Presently is a hosted micro-update platform that allows members of a team to update others about their work and activities. Users can add text attachments, broadcast message to a group or account, share photos and other attachments. The homepage contains a textbox at the right side and below that you can see your following, your followers and the groups you have joined. On the left side you will be able to see the latest updates. You can also check out the questions asked by other in the Question section. Other than this you can create tags on update in order to categorize information, customize the color of application and receive updates through text and instant message.

Why it might be a killer

Stopping climate change is a real concern in the days we are living through, and any contribution to the cause is a welcome addition.

What it does

In the words of the five-men team behind it, Ecorio enables you to “track your mobile carbon footprint. Reduce and offset it. Inspire others to do the same. All from your phone. All for free”. This is a very apt definition of what this app sets out to do, and the issues it attempts to redress.

Once you have installed Ecorio, it will run in the background of your phone and keep tack of the car and bus journeys you undertake. A summary will be eventually produced, and then you can set down to buying offsets in relation to your carbon footprint figures.

That is, once you have figured out what is your personal contribution to global warming from activities like driving, you can fund activities that reduce greenhouse gas emissions to balance out the situation.

In addition to that, Ecorio makes it possible to you to find out public transit and carpooling information for each trip, and find the best routes available in an instant fashion.

As a conclusion, this is a well-developed application that deserves your attention if only because of the important role it can play out as regards stopping climate change.

Telephone Calls on Facebook, a Dual App

Telephone is a recently launched Facebook application that lets you make free VoIP calls directly from Facebook. There are several other applications that enable you to do this on Facebook and other networks like MySpace and Bebo, but Telephone, launched by BabyTel, is adding a few extra features to hopefully make it worth your while.

After adding the Telephone app to your Facebook account, you can launch the service and make phone calls directly to your Facebook friends. In order to make a VoIP call, both you and your friend will need to also have the application as well as the downloadable software. But the good thing about having the software installed on your computer is that the Telephone app can then be used as a standalone desktop application for sending and receiving calls even when you don’t have Facebook open in a web browser.

Similar to Skype, you can make VoIP calls and send instant messages. And similar to Digsby, the desktop app enables you to communicate with Facebook friends without having to be logged into Facebook. So with so many features similar to existing applications, is it worth it to try the Telephone application at all?

There are a few features that may be of interest to you, depending on how often you need to communicate with Facebook friends. For instance, Telephone allows you to organize friends into groups for easy access and messaging, as well as leave voicemails for friends that aren’t currently available to talk. Telephone also displays your call history for additional information. The call history could prove useful given its direct integration with your Facebook network, offering insight into your own personal behavior and communication patterns.

I imagine such data could be useful to other services as well, from a non-personal standpoint. But one thing I’d love to see on the Telephone app is a more direct integration with Facebook’s existing chat tool, similar to Tokbox’s integration. This way, you can invite friends to add the Telephone app in a more direct manner, and more readily initiate VoIP calls with friends as well.

While the application is robust, it doesn’t appear as though the uptake has been good. A quick look at the application chart shows that traffic to the application has dropped significantly over the past month. While we’d assume that this trend will continue, perhaps the company will adopt practices that make the application more viral under the new design. For now we will have to wait and see. Go install the telphone application and judge for yourself how successful this will be.

Cloud OS shows what Google could do with Chrome

Good OS, a company renowned for its gOS Linux that was launched at Wal-Mart, is now announcing “Cloud” a new instant on OS that boots into a browser with services from Google, Yahoo and Windows Live with in seconds. Cloud could also optionally boot into Windows, if users desire. The OS would be pre-installed on GIGABYTE Touch Screen Notebooks which would hit the market early next year.

“We are excited to preview the GIGABYTE Touch-Screen Netbook with Cloud and Windows together, said a Good OS spokesperson. “With Cloud, GIGABYTE Netbooks will power on to the Internet in seconds, while still supporting killer applications together with Windows XP.”

Google also has plans to get Chrome pre-installed on PCs and we are sure that they would pull off something similar by adding icons of Google services in the bottom of the browser area to give users an easy and instant access to its services.

Everything Is A Rather Unusual Desktop Search Tool

Search tools usually begin to display results as soon as the user is entering some characters. Some instantly display hits while others require the use of the enter key to start the search. Everything - that’s the name of the portable software that is under review - uses a different approach.

Like the name suggests it starts off by displaying everything - that is all files and folders - of a computer system. It eliminates all files and folders that do not match the search query of the user in the instant the key is pressed. What this means is that thousands of file names and folders will be displayed at the beginning, for example 1.5 million on a Windows XP test system.

Entering characters will reduce that amount drastically so that the required files and folders will be left in the end. To ensure that all files and folders have to be added to the index at start. It might take a minute or two depending on the amount of files. The developer mentions that indexing 1 million files will take around 1 minute. The index will be stored on the computer’s hard drive in the same location that the file was launched from. The one million indexed files and folders take up about 5 Megabytes of hard drive space.

The desktop search tool uses between 50 and 60 Megabytes of computer memory and about the same mount of virtual memory while running. The items can be sorted by name, path, data or size.

The search supports Boolean expressions, wildcards and regular expressions. The faq contains a helpful list of the expressions that can be used in the search.

Another interesting aspect of Everything is that it can launch an HTTP server so that users can search for and download files.

Everything will run on Windows 2000, XP, 2003 and Vista and can locate files and folders on local NTFS volumes.

I Want Sandy & Stikkit Close
Two popular online productivity applications, I Want Sandy and Stikkit, have announced that they will be shutting down soon. Both services are run by the same company and recently got acquired by Twitter. It was hinted that some of the technology would be integrated into Twitter later on.

Google Admits to Breaking App Store Terms
After a little searching around a group of individuals managed to find out that Google had used undocumented API’s in their iPhone application, which is against Apple’s SDK rules. There’s been no word from Apple yet regarding whether Google will have to change how their program works.

eBay’s Traffic Plummeting
According to some data eBay’s traffic in the U.S. has been sharply dropping. In October 2007 they were receiving 13.5 million unique visitors, but in October 2008 they received just 9.1 million unique visitors. And it continues to drop from one month to another. Will eBay be able to come back?

Apple Finally Got Safari Right on the iPhone
Looks like I’m not the only one noticing a dramatically improved Safari browser on the iPhone 2.2 firmware. I used to see Safari crashes several times each day, but haven’t had a single hiccup since the iPhone 2.2 firmware update. Yay!

Google Maps Updated
Google has updated their maps service with a refreshed interface, and spruced up the Street View a bit. Now when using Street View the imagery will take up the entire map area on the screen instead of being contained in a bubble. This is a dramatic improvement for anyone that uses the Street View regularly.

G1 Gets Visual Voicemail and Opera Mini
The T-Mobile G1 powered by Google’s Android operating system now has two long awaited apps: visual voicemail and Opera Mini. The only downside is that the visual voicemail service is run by a third-party, but it is still free.

Watch Out for the New Digsby Installer
I’ve been a huge fan of the Digsby instant messenger client ever since it became available, and have managed to get dozens of friends, family, and co-workers using their software. Now, however, they are doing something I’m not all that fond of… asking users to install toolbars and other things during installation. I’ll continue to recommend their software, but I’ll be sure to warn people about the things it will try to install.

Hyperweek is a new initiative that aims to provide users such as Internet publishers and editors enhanced content distribution options when it comes to online groups and communities.
