Apple has released another update to Quicktime that should be a small bit of good news to unibody MacBook and MacBook Pro owners. Bringing its version number up to 7.5.7, the new Quicktime removes the HDCP playback restrictions from standard definition movies purchased and rented from iTunes. According to the release notes:

This update is recommended for owners of MacBook, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro with Mini DisplayPort. The update addresses an issue where some standard definition purchases from the iTunes Store do not play on some external displays.

It should be emphasized that this only resolves issues with standard definition versions of purchases. So, if you were having troubles before and are now hoping to watch that download in all its high definition glory, you are still out of luck.

The update is currently only available via Software Update for all Mini DisplayPort equipped systems.

Mac users: did your VPN client quit on you recently? Read on, then. I have suffered a similar fate, and found a potential remedy, which I am glad to share.

I am lucky enough to attend MAX this year, but have not blogged a single peep about it. That's not because it's been terribly dull, with no great announcements or code insights or geeked out super nerds with kilts playing Unreal Tournament on bean-bag chairs. Ho, no. There's been a ton of that. Sadly, there's also been a broken VPN client on my MacBook.

The problem was Heisenberg quirky for a while, such that any time I had some spare time and would swear I would figure out how to fix it, the problem would stop occuring. It only seemed to occur when I was stressed for time, at the client, or already grinding my teeth over some other problem. Luckily, if you use Google to search for 'Error 51: Unable to communicate with the VPN subsystem', you get two entries, one of which explains the whole thing. Note that, if you type 'Area 51', you will get considerably more than two results.

First, the word on the internet is "the Cisco VPN client tends to break with most OS X updates.". Like a good solider, I tend to accept OSX updates from Apple, mostly because I hope it will fix various annoying broken things, like the kernal panic when unplugging my Apple keyboard. While that issue persists, it looks like I've gained a new hassle by having an intermittently broken VPN. Expect it stopped seeming intermittent, starting last week, just before MAX and all the fun things I wanted to blog while sitting on a bean bag at Moscone West. So I'm fixing it.

The page continues; 'I've found the Cisco VPN client to be the least reliable VPN client I've ever used. In fact, I think it breaks during most updates, possibly because Cisco (a) doesn't bother to write a more modern launchd version, and/or (b) they put their StartupItem in the System/Library/StartupItems folder, which (unless I'm mistaken) is intended to be reserved for Apple software."

The best part of all was finding the solution. There is nothing that delivers greater nerd joy than a shell command for punching a troublesome process in the kidney. Since the console log reported "com.cisco.VPNClient[301]: Could not attach to driver. Is kernel module loaded?", the idea of giving the VPN driver a kick seemed worth a try. Here's the command:

 sudo /System/Library/StartupItems/CiscoVPN/CiscoVPN restart

Which I ran as such:

Type that into terminal, along with your password, and you should be up and running. More on MAX in a bit; it's my turn (finally) to play some Unreal Tournament.

SAN FRANCISCO--"We are at an inflection point where there are enormous problems to be solved and enormous opportunities."

Those weren't the words of President-elect Barack Obama. It was the Pied Piper of Web 2.0, Tim O'Reilly, making his opening remarks at the Web 2.0 Summithere Wednesday.

Against the backdrop of the change in power in Washington, D.C. (opportunities) and the economic meltdown (one of the problems), the navel-gazing tech industry lives on. Speakers at the event include VC legend John Doerr, Yahoo's Jerry Yang, Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg, Alibaba's Jack Ma, Intel's Paul Otellini, Al Gore, and Lance Armstrong. Co-host John Battelle, who is also the CEO of ad network Federated Media, was quick to thank the sponsors who came through with the money, citing the tough climate for advertising.

But the Web 2.0 Summit inaugural session didn't start with talk about Web 2.0 business models, entrepreneurial riches, or surviving the downturn. In the spirit of the new era in American history, philanthropy and investing in a better future were the first topics of discussion.

Google.org Executive Director Dr. Larry Brilliant talked about how his organization put $100 million to work in the past year. Google invests 1 percent of Google's equity and profits (in various forms) and employee time to fund the organization.

Google.org Executive Director Larry Brilliant speaks Wednesday at Web 2.0 Summit 2008.
(Credit: Dan Farber)

Most recently, Google.org's "Predict and Prevent" initiative gave grants of more than $14 million to support partners working in Southeast Asia and Africa to prevent the next pandemic.

Google.org isn't purely philanthropic in its approach to investing in a better future. The Renewable Energy Cheaper Than Coal initiative, for example, has made $50 million investments in alternative energy companies. "It's different than pick and shovel investments," Brilliant said. "It is important that we make money on these investments and for the companies to make a profit...If they don't make money, no one else will and we won't be able to take advantage of capital flows and market forces."

Google.org has invested more than $10 million in enhanced geothermal energy. "Geothermal, if it works, is better than intermittent producers of solar and wind, and it's also ubiquitous," Brilliant said, noting that he meets with Google founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page every week to discuss Google.org.

Brilliant also touted the virtues of The WELL, which he co-founded in 1985, over the current set of online communications services, such as Twitter and instant messaging. The WELL is structured to support more coherent conversations on important issues, he said. "Coherent" is probably the key word, given the more linear and chronological nature of WELL conversations, but the use of blogs, instant messaging, wikis, and social networks, as well as more traditional forum software helped to catapult Barack Obama from relative obscurity to the White House in two years.

A new contender is the J1VEBOX website. This particular portal has all the usual goodies and features, namely a large archive that can be accessed with ease and features that make for community interaction.

The featured database of artists can be searched using the provided tool. This returns not only exact matches but also approximate results. Of course, it is also possible to browse by category, and these include “Best Rock Songs”, “Hip-Hop”, “Pop” and “Latin” to name just a few. In addition to that, video files of note are spotlighted under the “Top Videos” and “New Videos” headings. These are also spotlighted on the main page, alongside the “Video of the day”.

Further goodies include a J1VEBOX community toolbar that can be procured by clicking on the intermittent banner which is located at the bottom of the page.

In their own words

“Great music videos from J1VEBOX.”

Why it might be a killer

It is a good way of checking out the latest music videos in a practical fashion.

Link: http://www.j1vebox.com
Our Review: http://www.killerstartups.com/Video-Music-Photo/j1vebox-com-watch-music-videos-online

Whether you’re a busy college student, an overworked professional, or simply forgetful, it’s possible that the Fall premier season has swept by you. WIth so many great new shows, it would be a shame to miss out. So here are some helpful tips to get caught up!

First of all, you’ll need to identify which shows you want to watch. If you’re still reading this article, I’m going to assume that you at least already know what you’re missing. Even if you’re not aware of every new show, we’ll get to how you can find new ones in a little bit.

Once you know what you want to watch, you might do some research. The best place for this is The Internet Movie Database or IMDB. Contrary to the name, the IMDB has expanded its scope to encompass just about anything to grace big or small screens. For our purposes you might want to use it to look up which shows are on which networks. The benefit to using IMDB is that it will also clue you in to show stats like who’s playing who and the concept behind the show. Another reason to use the database is that they are fairly good about keeping spoilers out of their listings.

If you have determined the network that owns your shows, you can move on to the process of finding them online. Of course there are less than legal methods of doing this, but nowadays there are fewer reasons to because most of the major shows are already available for free from the networks themselves. Finding them on their flash-heavy websites can be tricky, so I’ve compiled a handy list that should (fingers crossed) take you through the fog and straight to the steaming goodness. [Note: Some of these sites heavily divide the videos so that each show has its own page. The links as close to the videos as possible.]

NBC

CBS

FOX

ABC

USA

Sci Fi

Of course not every show will be encompassed by this list because there are a number of really great shows on the smaller networks. Unfortunately these are a little harder to track down because the digital rights agreements may not have been drawn up for them beyond DVD sales and the like.

There is another option at your disposal. If all the flash menus are starting to get to you, you can switch over to Hulu, which has largely the same content as the network site, but also has a wide range of other agreements, including entire catalogs of older shows. In fact, here’s the direct link to their alphabetical television listings.

Personally, I love Hulu. Their player is fantastic, with several notable features and neat style choices. First is the interface. With a translucent simplicity, the player is soft on the eye and doesn’t clash with the video. Once you’ve got the show started, there is a “lower lights” button that casts a dark filter over the rest of the window. This little add-on, which probably required three lines of code, makes the entire experience a lot better and reduces eye strain.

Even the ads, dreadful as ads are, remain fairly unobtrusive. They stay within the original box, tell you exactly how long they are going to last (so you might grab something in another room if it is a long one) and they are clearly experimenting with new ad models. Whenever an ad comes up, you can actually rate whether or not you like it. Also, occasionally Hulu will prompt you as to whether you want to see one long ad (usually a movie trailer) at the beginning or the normal intermittent ads. Unfortunately the latter option tends to show the same ad over and over throughout the show.

Hopefully one of the above options was able to help you find that new sitcom or the season premier of The Office. If it didn’t work out, you’re one of many, struggling to find an easy way to access television online. At this point, rips on YouTube and torrents are the only technological option and they are usually illegal. Even so, keep your hopes up, because sooner or later every network will get on board with online distribution sites like Hulu.

Right now the U.S. has a very real opportunity to transform our economy from one running on fossil fuels to one largely based on clean energy. We are developing the technologies and know-how to accomplish this. We can build whole new industries and create millions of new jobs. We can reduce energy costs, both at the gas pump and at home. We can improve our national security. And we can put a big dent in climate change. With strong leadership we could be moving forward on an aggressive but realistic timeline and an approach that balances costs with real economic gains.

The energy team at Google has been crunching the numbers to see how we could greatly reduce fossil fuel use by 2030. Our analysis, led by Jeffery Greenblatt, suggests a potential path to weaning the U.S. off of coal and oil for electricity generation by 2030 (with some remaining use of natural gas as well as nuclear), and cutting oil use for cars by 40%. Al Gore has issued a challenge that is even more ambitious, getting us to carbon-free electricity even sooner. We hope the American public pushes our leaders to embrace it. T. Boone Pickens has weighed in with an interesting plan of his own to massively deploy wind energy, among other things. Other plans have also been developed in recent years that merit attention.

Our goal in presenting this first iteration of the Clean Energy 2030 proposal is to stimulate debate and we invite you to take a look and comment -- or offer an alternative approach if you disagree. With a new Administration and Congress -- and multiple energy-related imperatives -- this is an opportune, perhaps unprecedented, moment to move from plan to action.

Over 22 years this plan could generate billions of dollars in savings and help create millions of green jobs. Many of these high quality, good-paying jobs will be in today's coal and oil producing states.

To get there we need to move immediately on three fronts:

(1) Reduce demand by doing more with less

We should start with the low-hanging fruit by reducing energy demand through energy efficiency -- adopting technologies and practices that allow us to do more with less. At Google, we've seen the benefits of this approach. We identified $5M in building efficiency investments with a 2.5 year payback. We've also designed our own data centers to run more efficiently, and we believe they are the most efficient in the world. On a smaller scale, personal computers can also become much more efficient. A typical desktop PC wastes nearly half the power it consumes. Last year, Bill Weihl, our Green Energy Czar, worked with industry partners to create the Climate Savers Computing Initiative to raise energy efficiency standards for personal computers and servers. If we meet our goals, these standards will cut energy consumption by the equivalent of 10-20 coal-fired power plants by 2010.

Government can have a big impact on achieving greater efficiency. California's aggressive building codes, efficiency standards and utility programs have helped the state keep per-capita energy use flat for years, while consumption in much of the rest of the country has grown significantly. Enacting similar policies at the national level would help even more.

We also need to give the American people opportunities to be more efficient. The way we buy electricity today is like going to a store without seeing prices: we pick what we want, and receive an unintelligible bill at the end of the month. When homes are equipped with smart meters and real-time pricing, research shows that energy use typically drops. Google is looking at ways that we can use our information technology and our reach to help increase awareness and bring better, real-time information to consumers.

(2) Develop renewable energy that is cheaper than coal (RE<C)

Google’s data centers draw from a U.S. electricity grid that relies on coal for 50% of its power. We want to help catalyze the development of renewable energy that is price-competitive with coal. At least three technologies show tremendous promise: wind, solar thermal, and advanced geothermal. Each of these is abundant and, when combined, could supply energy in virtually every region of the U.S.

This year Google has invested more than $45 million in startup companies with breakthrough wind, solar and geothermal technologies through our Renewable Energy Cheaper than Coal initiative (<a href="http://www.google.org/rec.html" id="k.wh" title="RE<C">RE<C), but that is a drop when we need a flood. We need to unleash massive private investment in clean energy. The government can have a big impact here as well. We must dramatically increase federal R&D and enact measures supporting the rapid deployment and scaling of clean technologies such as long-term tax support and national renewable energy standards. Tax credits for wind and solar have lapsed several times in the last 20 years, starving these nascent industries of the capital they need to truly enter the mainstream.

We also must work both sides of the RE<C equation. Progress will accelerate when the price of carbon reflects its true costs to society. Putting a price on carbon through cap-and-trade or a carbon tax would help address this.

(3) Electrify transportation and re-invent our electric grid

Imagine driving a car that uses no gas and is less expensive to recharge than buying a latte. A "smart grid" allows you to charge when electricity is cheap, and maybe even make some money by selling unused power back to the grid when it's needed. Plug-in cars are on their way, with GM, Toyota and other manufacturers planning introductions in the next two years. At Google we have a small fleet of Toyota Prius and Ford Escape plug-in conversions, as a part of our RechargeIT program. The converted Prius plug-ins get over 90 MPG, and the Escapes close to 50 MPG. However, to successfully put millions of plug-in cars on the road and fuel them with green electricity, we need a smart grid that manages when we charge and how we're billed. A smart grid could also provide for the two-way flow of electricity, as well as large-scale integration of intermittent solar and wind energy. Much of the technology in our current electrical grid was developed in the 60s and is wasteful and not very smart. We are partnering with GE to help accelerate the development of the smart grid and support building new transmission lines to harness our nation's vast renewable energy resources.

We see a huge opportunity for the nation to confront our energy challenges. In the process we will stimulate investment, create jobs, empower consumers and, by the way, help address climate change.
MyConnection Server is broadband testing software which measures
connections for bandwidth speeds and connection quality for time
critical applications such as VoIP, Video conferencing, and IPTV. It
helps organizations assess networks for deployment of new/additional
services and identify and resolve last mile customer connectivity
problems with little need for the customer to assist in the resolution
process. A network route testing component details the path of the
connections and where packet loss and latency occur, including discovery
of multiple routes to a destination. Remote Test Agents enable technical
staff to customize and interactively manage the bandwidth testing
process and perform extended quality testing over hours or days to
address and resolve intermittent problems as required. Satellite Servers
establish additional connection testing points at the application edge
to accurately test actual application network paths.

Podcast subscribers have long yearned for more granular control over downloading and retention in iTunes -- "keep three episodes" might be great for Wait Wait, Don't Tell Me or Mac OS Ken, but what about Coverville or You Look Nice Today? You'd surely want to keep those & other awesome 'casts in perpetuity, and there are some podcasts that are so large you want to cull them after one download.

Now, iTunes 8 lets you apply retention policies on a podcast-by-podcast basis. Select the podcast in the list and click the "Settings" button at the bottom of the window, then UNcheck the "Use Default Settings" box to enable custom prefs for that particular show. Dee-lightful! Unfortunately, podcast-to-iPod sync settings are still one for all and all for one, but this is a step in the right direction.

Update: Comments below (and a visit to the Wayback Machine) have confirmed that the territorial clause in the iTunes store TOS is not a new addition with v8, but has in fact been in place for quite some time. It's interesting that it only came up as a topic of discussion now -- perhaps because everyone was forced to reaccept the TOS with the new version, and read it a bit more carefully? It's also looking like the clause was displayed front and center on the new TOS acceptance screen; this degree of prominence seems to be new, and probably attracted attention to the pre-existing restriction. In any case, our apologies for the error.

Speaking of minor changes that might have major implications, a number of readers have expressed concern about something that Robert originally pointed out in his rundown of iTunes 8: that the iTunes store terms of service (long a source of controversy in Europe) <del>now include</del> have long included a clause restricting use to the geographic area where the user's account is established. In the US the rule reads:

10. Territory. The Service is available only in the United States. You agree not to use or attempt to use the Service from outside of the available territory, and that Apple may use technologies to verify your compliance.

There are several classes of users who might run afoul of this restriction: travelers who shop in their home stores while venturing abroad, for example, would technically be in violation... but our suspicion is that these casual, intermittent border-busters are not what Rule 10 is about. Instead, any enforcement of this restriction is likely to be aimed at users who live in one country and establish an iTunes store account in another -- allowing them to buy TV shows or movies that may not be available yet (or ever) in their localities.

Certainly the content providers who sell their wares through iTunes may choose not to sell their programs to a particular region at a particular time; that's their prerogative. It seems somewhat myopic, however, to think that enforcing restrictions by geography in the iTunes store will have any effect other than to drive revenue and customers from the quasi-legal market firmly into the rip-and-download underground.

Thanks to Eric & Mark

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Bonjour, also known as zero-configuration networking, enables automatic discovery of computers, devices, and services on IP networks. Bonjour uses industry standard IP protocols to allow devices to automatically discover each other without the need to enter IP addresses or configure DNS servers.

System requirements
Bonjour requires Windows 2000/2003, Windows XP or Windows Vista. Make sure you have the latest Service Pack installed for your computer using Windows Update.

Users running 64-bit versions of Windows XP or Windows Vista can download a compatible version of Bonjour for Windows 1.0.5 here.

Bonjour is a networking protocol that sends and receives network packets on UDP port 5353. If you have a "personal firewall" enabled, you will need to ensure that UDP port 5353 is open for Bonjour to work correctly. Certain firewalls will only partially block Bonjour packets, so if you experience intermittent behavior, check the firewall settings and verify that Bonjour is listed as an exception and is allowed to receive incoming packets. Bonjour will configure the Windows firewall appropriately during installation on Windows XP Service Pack 2 and above.

Installing Bonjour
Double-click the Bonjour installer and follow the onscreen instructions.

When installing over a previous version of Bonjour for Windows, please remove any existing instances of Bonjour for Windows through the "Add or Remove Programs" Control Panel before installing Bonjour for Windows 1.0.5.

If Java is not present at the time of installation and you decide to install Java at a later date, you will need to do a Repair install of Bonjour for Windows in order to get the proper Java Bonjour libraries. To do a Repair install, go to the "Add or Remove Programs" Control Panel, select Bonjour from the list and click "Change/Remove". Then choose "Repair" and follow the onscreen instructions.

What's included
Bonjour for Windows includes a plugin to discover advertised HTTP servers using Internet Explorer. Click the Bonjour icon in the Internet Explorer toolbar to enable Bonjour browsing. If you have Bonjour devices on your local network with embedded HTTP (Web) servers, they will appear in the list.

The Bonjour Printer Wizard is also included and allows Windows computers to print to Bonjour networked printers, including USB shared printers connected to the AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express Base Stations. Since Apple first launched Bonjour in 2002, every major maker of network printers has adopted Bonjour. With the Bonjour Printer Wizard, computers using Windows can also experience the benefits of effortlessly discovering and printing to these Bonjour printers.

Known Issues
A small number of Virtual Private Network (VPN) clients interfere with Bonjour. If you find that you can no longer discover network services or print to Bonjour shared printers, try logging out of VPN.

More information
Bonjour is commonly installed by third-party software to provide zero-configuration networking capabilities to various applications. If your version of Bonjour does not include the IE plugin or Printer Wizard mentioned above, and you would like these features, you can download the complete Bonjour for Windows package from Apple's web site by visiting
