RSS Feeds have become an essential way to keep up-to-date with many different online sources of information – in fact without it, tracking blog updates would be next to impossible.

To those of you with a feed addiction, it may come as some surprise to learn that RSS adoption is still surprisingly low across web users– even those who spend a lot of time on the internet. Most people are unaware of the technology or if they are – even less interested. A lot of people simply prefer email subscriptions and depending on the target audience of a blog this can be nearly equal with RSS subscribers. Even here on MakeUseOf, a substantial number of our subscribers are using email for updates.

There are hundreds of interesting ways in which RSS feeds can be put to use. Yahoo Pipes is one great example and this is something I’d like to write about in more detail at a later time. For now however I’d like to introduce you to PostRank.

What is it exactly?

“PostRank is a scoring system developed by AideRSS to rank any kind of online content, such as RSS feed items, blog posts, articles, or news stories. PostRank is based on social engagement, which refers to how interesting or relevant people have found an item or category to be. Examples of engagement include writing a blog post in response to someone else, bookmarking an article, leaving a comment on a blog, or clicking a link to read a news item.”

The 5 ‘C’s are used to determine the popularity of any particular post, I’ll leave you to check it out for yourself if you wish to find out more detail, but in essence this criteria includes the following:

The creation of a blog post responding directly to another blog post. This is the biggest determinate of a post’s popularity.

Commenting on a blog post – the second most important measure of audience engagement and the quality of the article.

Discussion – this involves mentioning a post on other social networking services like Twitter.

Sharing – submitting a site to Digg, or bookmarking it using a service like Del.icio.us

User activity on the page – clicks and page views, not given too much weight in PostRank.

Using this system, blog posts can be run through PostRank to determine just how popular (and therefore how good) the posts are. In the example mentioned above, this is how NewsGator implemented PostRank. When viewing one of your feeds online, you can choose to change the view to show only the most popular items – a useful feature for when in a rush.

Why Would You Want it?

For me the biggest issue I have is finding time to read all the feeds I subscribe to. While personal blogs may only get updated once a day, large multi-author blogs (like one particular blog you may be aware of) are updated much more frequently while other sites focusing on news will be updated constantly 24/7.

With this constant flow of information it’s become increasingly necessary to have the ability to filter out articles which are not of interest to you, and instead simply read the articles which are.

This is where PostRank comes in.

What’s great about this is that no matter what RSS reader you use, be it web based like Google Reader or a desktop application like FeedDemon you can still use PostRank to filter your feeds.

PostRank is both an online RSS reader, service and also an API which developers can choose to include in their applications if they wish. One notable online service which have done is this is Newsgator Online a few months ago.

How Else Can I Use It?

To use PostRank on any feed simply submit it to the PostRank website. I’ve shown an example in the screenshot below.

If this is a fairly popular feed you’ve submitted then it’ll already be in the system. If it’s a bit more obscure than you may have to wait a day or so for it to be fully submitted (I’m actually only guessing, I have no real idea how long it takes. Perhaps someone else knows?). In my own experience any feed I wanted to use was already submitted so I’ve had no issues.

After this you can choose what to do with the feed. You can select from 4 different rankings:

All Posts

Good Posts

Great Posts

Best Posts

You can also filter the feed by any keywords you want.

After doing this, if you decide you would like to use this feed in your own RSS application then simply click the ‘create new feed’ button. Using this feed you can simply import it into whatever application you already use and replace the feed which may be overwhelming you slightly.

If you decide to create a PostRank account then you can use the site as your web based feed reader. You can save submitted feeds and change them as you like. If you don’t want to sign up then if you want to make any changes to the feed you’ve created you’ll have to start over again – although it’s not really that inconvenient.

Hopefully some of you can find this useful, I know I did. Has anyone else already been using it in this way? You may also want to check out Mark’s previous article on using PostRank and AideRSS in Google Reader.

If you have this headache, remove WinWebSecurity.
WinWebSecurity put trojans at various locations. They facilitate its impact on user but in another way that WinWebSecurity applies itself; this impact is indirect as trojans captures memory making it unavailable on demand of operating system. This, of course, obviously slows down computer and that is the rascals’ design to scare victims with real system performance depreciation and make a timely advice to register WinWebSecurity for only few dozens of bucks. There is another way, to get rid of WinWebSecurity and corresponding trojans and install real spyware removal tool or at least perform manual removal of WinWebSecurity. Click here to scan computer for free and remove WinWebSecurity afterwards.

Some questions

What are the different plans available?

What it does

Teamwork can be a bit taxing sometimes, especially if team members are located in different places and tasks have to be coordinated quickly. Of course, there is an endless array of tools for getting things done in due time, and the suitably-titled Planzone is a new solution that falls into this category.

Planzone allows you to create a workspace where you can communicate with your coworkers and collaborate instantly, as well as sharing and reusing project templates and managing tasks in general.

There is a marked emphasis on ease of use, as everything is handled via an intuitive interface that makes you “work smarter, not harder”, to quote the team behind the project.
The team behind this solution, incidentally, hails from France and it hopes to introduce networking features as soon as possible in a bid to make Planzone stand as the tool of choice for the worldwide community.

In the meantime, you can sign up for a Planzone account at the site and get started in no time at all. Both free plans and paid versions are available for you to choose from, too.

In their own words

“Traditional project management tools were designed in the 1990's for a closed world where team members are co-located, processes are well-defined, and schedules are rigid. Nowadays, with Web access from every desktop, most of us live in an open, flat world, comprised of ad-hoc teams of co-workers, outsourcers and partners, often in remote locations. We spend most of our time on-line, and our work environment is very fluid. Yet, we all need ready access to accurate, fresh and shared business information. That’s what Planzone provides.”

Why it might be a killer

Tools that make for more flexible collaboration processes over the web always have a ready public.

Link: http://www.planzone.com
Our Review: http://www.killerstartups.com/Web-App-Tools/planzone-com-online-project-management-software

What it does

Mallplace dubs itself as “the new way to shop”, and that description encapsulates the essence of this UK-based initiative quite well. Generally speaking, Mallplace can be compared to a portal that gives you immediate access to major retailers on the WWW using an interactive interface that is the closest to actually being there that has been devised so far.

Such an approach benefits all parties. Consumers are provided an immersive shopping experience that has no precedents, whereas retailers become part of the first all-encompassing shopping center on the Internet as of this date.

As it is stressed out at the site, Mallplace has yet to unleash its full potential – it is propounded that it is only a fraction (20 %) of what it can become. Features that are planned for upcoming updates include adding a social element to the equation, which in practice would mean that the consumer could engage in events and discuss hot deals and promotions with other people that are part of his circle of friends.

It will be quite interesting to see similar endeavors come along and cater for the American market. For the time being, our British buddies can set their browsers to Mallplace and start immersing themselves into this virtual shopping mall.

In their own words

“The creation of Mallplace recognises and embraces the potential of the internet as the emerging marketplace and it offers you a new, more convenient, more efficient and contemporarily adjusted way to shop. Mallplace has all of the mass retailers that you would expect. It will introduce you to the best online e-tailers. It can also introduce you to the best independent retailers, specialist retailers and mid-multiples. It will present the best service providers in the UK. Mallplace is innovative and it will bring an array of the best luxury brands and services for you to study and peruse.”

Why it might be a killer

It takes online shopping above and beyond by providing one of the most realized experiences so far.

Some questions

Will a similar endeavor covering the US marketplace come along?

Link: http://www.mallplace.com
Our Review: http://www.killerstartups.com/eCommerce/mallplace-com-the-world-of-shopping-revolutionized

For non-ESET fans, please bear with me for one more day because today’s article will be again about getting free ESET license. I’ve previously shared with you on how to get a free 3 months and 6 months ESET NOD32 Antivirus license. Today will be about getting free ESET Smart Security username and password with 3 months subscription. The difference between the 2 ESET products (NOD32 Antivirus and Smart Security) is that Smart Security has a personal firewall and antispam together with the same antivirus and antispyware protection delivered by NOD32 Antivirus. However, it doesn’t come with other fancy features such as game mode, parental control and web safety such as LinkScanner by AVG or SiteAdvisor by McAfee. Surprisingly the price for 1 user ESET Smart Security license valid for a year is also the most expensive compared to other Internet Security suites.

The steps to get the free ESET Smart Security username and password again requires you to go through proxy. Since many of you had problems tunneling through open proxy, I will introduce you a few more tools and sites that can help you find a working china open proxy more easily. To get your free ESET Smart Security username and password valid for 3 months, just follow the steps below.

1. First we need to look for open proxy that belongs to China. Here are 3 sites (Roinstrument, XROXY, Pass) that contains china open proxy. I’d suggest you to copy all the china proxies ip address and port to a text file with the format IP:Port (eg: 202.188.0.133:80) per line.

2a. Open proxy usually don’t last long so you’ll have to test them. One of the easiest and fastest way to test the proxies is by using an online proxy checker. Just paste a the list of proxy addresses which you’ve created in step 1 to the form and click the Check Proxy! button. When finished testing, the good working proxies will be listed at the end of the page.

2b. If you have a list of proxies and not categorized according to country, here is a free and simple tool called Country Detector where you can load the proxy list, and it’ll produce a new list with country code next to the proxy address. The ip-to-country database is very old, you might need to download the latest database and then replace the GeoIP.dat file which is in the same location as CountryDetector.exe.

3. Once you have a working china open proxy, run Proxifier. Go to Options > Proxy Settings…

Click Add button, enter the proxy address and port. Next you need to select the protocol of the proxy. If the online proxy checker tells you that it is a “good socks 4 proxies”, then select SOCKS Version 4. Now click the Check button. You might want to enable SOCKS 4A extension if the testing fails. Once you get the message “Proxy is ready to work with Proxifier”, proceed to next step. Otherwise keep testing until you get a working proxy.

4. Open http://www.eset.com.cn/trial/ess_ac_90/ and click the yellow colored button.

5. Enter your name, email, confirm email again and click the button.

Note down the 24-digit activation code which can be used to convert it into a working ESET Smart Security username and password valid for 3 months.

6. If you’ve already installed ESET Smart Security, skip this step. If not, disable Proxifier, go to Australia’s NOD32 website to request for a 1 month trial license. Just enter your email address and hit the Submit button. Check your email and you should receive an email from noreply@eset.sk with the suject “ESET Smart Security - Trial License”. Note down the 1 month trial ESET username and password. Download the latest ESET Smart Security here and install. Enter the ESET username and password when requested. If you’re using a 64-bit Windows operating system, you have to download this installer instead. During installation, check “Setup update parameters later” when asked to enter your ESET Smart Security username and password.

7. Now download ESET Activation Tool. This ESET Activation Tool is an official program by ESET to activate/convert the 24 digit serial number into a genuine ESET Smart Security username and password. Re-enable Proxifier and run essact.exe. Make sure the first option “Activate with Activation Code” is selected. Enter your name, email and the 24-digit activation code. The name and email in the activation tool is not important so you can enter anything. If you got it right, you should see the message “Activation succeed, the Expiry Date is:2009-MM-DD”

8. Now launch ESET NOD32 Antivirus, click the Setup icon on the left hand side and then click Username and Password setup. You should only see the NOD32 username with the password hidden. To view the hidden password, download Asterisk Logger. Extract, run astlog.exe and voila! the ESET Smart Security password is revealed! I’ve tested the 3 months free ESET Smart Security username and password on NOD32View and the license can be used on both NOD32 Antivirus and Smart Security.

Important Note: This ESET Smart Security offer page logs the IP address, browser cookies and also email. In order for this to work, you must use a china proxy that has never been used to request the 24 digit ESET Smart Security activation code. The 24-digit code generated is based on your email address. Entering the same email will always give you the same code.

If you still can’t get the free ESET Smart Security username and password after trying for hours and about to throw your keyboard, try searching for Super GetValID V2 by Denniz / MasterSteven. It is only a vbs script that is able to connect to 25 websites, grabs all valid ESET Smart Security username and password, and automatically registers ESS to use the license. Super GetValID V2 is WAY better than NodLogin or NodEnabler because it connects to 25 sites simultaneously and the chances of all sites failing is very slim.

Thanks Kino for helping me to confirm on the offer restrictions.
Asustek shifted its handset development focus entirely to smartphones in 2007 and set some goals for 2008, the sources indicated. But mainly due to transitioning 3G chip platforms as well as the appropriation of R&D efforts to develop handsets based on Google's Android platform and Nuvifone handsets on an ODM basis for Garmin, Asustek has only launched seven new smartphones so far in 2008, much fewer than its initial target of 13-15, the sources pointed out."

According to industry sources, ASUSTeK's total shipments in 2008 amounted to a mere 3% of HTC's. They have a steep hill to climb if they're to improve on that in 2009, and the improvement would have to be pretty significant to grab HTC's attention. Whatever happens, competition is healthy; one can only hope it will prompt both companies to introduce new and exciting technologies into their handsets.

Own Mine is a meta search engine that uses GYMA to pull in results. They can either be seen individually or in combination. There is also a chat box that searchers can use to chat to others who are doing similar searches. The demo was a bit weird - it showed someone doing a search for a university, and it just so happened that another user of the engine was from the very same university. Chummy doing the search leaps into the chat box and asks for the best links to said university. To be honest - if I'm busy doing a search, I'm busy doing a search, and I'm not really that interested in stopping what I'm doing to help some random person on the way. Maybe that makes me a bad person, but that's just the way it is.

Second oddity about this engine is that it has some sort of really odd 'incentive scheme'. If you make the engine your home page, visit a certain amount of times, and/or introduce friends, you can get 'shares'. Are these real shares? Can you do anything with them? Are they worth anything? I have absolutely no clue and Own Mine isn't telling me either.

Nothing wrong with it as an engine I suppose - it does the same as plenty of others out there, but the live chat option really doesn't do it for me and the 'incentive scheme' just asks more questions than it answers.

One of the first posts I wrote as part of the MakeUseOf team was “10 Essential Mac Apps To Install After A Reformat“. That was way back in March, when I was still innocent, young and naïve. The title of the article was technically inaccurate; the introduction was misleading and a lot of controversy spewed on Digg as a result.

Since then, I’ve gotten a little wiser, learnt that I can’t really please everyone and mainly focused my attention to my target audience: recent Mac switchers. This particular group of people are those who used to work with Windows (or any other operating system) and somewhere along the way, switched to a Mac. Hence the term - Switchers. There’s something unique about this group of people. Their perception of computers have been brought along for the ride, so they think that the traditions which worked on Windows will also be suited to the Mac.

Reinstalling your OS, for instance, or as most people would know it - formatting, is one of such traditions. It used to be an annual event (or sometimes biannual) for me when I had a Windows laptop. I admit, when I first started using a Mac, I assumed that I would have to format it every now and then as well. Oh, I’ve been proved wrong (and flamed for it). Now, I advise most people to refrain from formatting their hard disks unless there is a OS X upgrade. Formatting is a tedious and time-consuming process of backing up data, keychains, preferences, reinstalling the operating system, updating it and finally putting everything back into place. But…

If you’ve formatted your hard disk recently, you’ll always require a reminder about which applications to get back. Or what I’d like to call the Essential Apps. These apps are always on my Mac and will always be the first to be installed. So, I’d like to re-introduce the 10 Essential Mac Apps To Install After Formatting v2.

Before we start off, let me just say that Quicksilver isn’t on this list, in case there are some eager QS fans trying to redeem its usefulness after Spotlight has been so extensively enhanced.

1. Sequential

OS X’s Quick Look is good for previewing documents without opening Pages or Microsoft Office, it is also good for previewing movies. But what I find it is not very good at is previewing multiple images because of the funny way one has to navigate through the images (if Finder is set to Icon view). Fine, you could enable the full-screen mode to make browsing easier but then another issue pops up: you can’t view the filename unless you return to the Index Sheet.

Sequential is an image viewer that makes it a whole lot easier to browse through a multitude of images in order. It is also able to browse the images within an archive (zip, rar). Just perfect to quickly skim through a folder full of photos and note the ones to be deleted or preserved because their filenames are always displayed in the navigator.

2. Inquisitor

Inquisitor is a plugin for Safari which tremendously enhances its search capabilities. It retrieves results from Google (or Yahoo!) instantly and presents them in a drop-down box as you type your query into Safari’s search field. Not only that, if you’re not exactly sure of what you’re searching for, it will try to suggest some probable keywords.

Find out more about Inquisitor from this post I wrote, comparing it to another popular Safari plugin, Glims.

3. iStat Menus

iStat Menus is a much better application compared to MenuMeters in terms of monitoring system information like CPU load, memory usage, network activity and CPU temperature. All this information sits neatly on your menu bar, thus making the readings very accessible.

Of course, you could go Pro, but iStat Pro is a Dashboard widget. Personally, I prefer iStat Menus even if it means that I get less information compared to using iStat Pro.

4. TeamViewer or Schnitz Remote Lite

Both of these applications are tools for attaining remote help. Assuming that you are a Mac newbie and often require rescue or assistance; and provided you have someone to help you out, either TeamViewer or Schnitz are right for the job.

There are many write-ups about TeamViewer here on MakeUseOf and I have personally written a short tutorial about how to use Schnitz Remote Lite.

5. NTFS-3G and MacFUSE

One of the very many reasons I hear come out from people who refuse to switch to Mac is compatibility. True enough, one of Mac’s main compatibility issues is NTFS write capability. Macs can read NTFS-formatted hard disks just fine but when your mate brings his NTFS external hard disk over with the intention of copying some stuff from your Mac - sorry, that operation is invalid.

It’s hard to swallow that such a refined operating system cannot provide write-capability for an archaic file system. Nevertheless, it’s not the end of the road. By using NTFS-3G together with MacFUSE, you’ll be able to write to NTFS drives at almost native speeds. To find out how to install them, check out my post on NTFS Blues.

6. AppCleaner

A free alternative to the very popular AppZapper, AppCleaner is an application you will need to use when uninstalling other programs from your Mac.

Apple teaches its users that the way to uninstall an application is to simply drag it to Trash but by doing that, you’re leaving behind a lot of junk files in your Library folder. An Uninstaller is all you need to remove programs and its associated files from your Mac.

7. OpenOffice

I’ve just listed OpenOffice because I’ve been coerced into saying, “OpenOffice FTW!” but actually I can switch between OpenOffice and NeoOffice, which is a Mac OS port. Honestly, productivity suites are exactly what they are: for work. Aren’t we able to get to work without being too picky?

8. Evernote

If you haven’t heard of Evernote, which rock have you been hiding under? It is a fabulous note-taking application. It collects information in whatever medium you give it (photos, text, audio) and stores them in your Mac and online in your Evernote account so that you’ll be able to retrieve it from just about anywhere.

If you have an iPhone, even better. Evernote has a mobile version (iTunes link) which will allow you to sync the information from your Mac to your iPhone wirelessly.

What makes Evernote so impressive is its ability to search for words within pictures, even handwritten notes succumb to it. It makes the content of photos searchable and by that, you won’t need to add notes to photos explaining what is contained in it. The pictures speak for itself.

9. Secrets

Secrets is a system preference pane with a database of hidden settings for OS X. And yes, you can change every one of them and tweak them to your heart’s desire. Using Secrets, you can change almost any setting possible, from altering the login background to enabling high definition movie trailers in Front Row. And if you changed something which you shouldn’t have, there’s always that safety net: the Revert button.

Secrets will only work for Mac OS X Leopard.

10. Skitch

This application isn’t absolutely a necessity but if you’re looking for a great way to instantly share screenshots, you can’t get any better than Skitch. Also, I use Skitch for its resizing and cropping capabilities. Rather than opening up Preview to perform simple cropping and resize tasks, I launch Skitch. Since it is always on the menu bar, it is very accessible. After I’m done, it shrinks back to the menu bar obscurely.

There they are. The 10 updated essential apps. This list does not completely replace its predecessor but merely complements it. There are some applications in the earlier list which cannot be replaced, like Adium, Transmission and Perian, for example.

How would you alter this list? Are there any other free applications that you would have in place of any of the ones here? Let me know in the comments.
