MobLogic launched in March as a sequel of sorts to Wallstrip, a cheeky show about stocks that CBS bought for about $4 million last year.

AllThingsD scribe Peter Kafka says the team will keep putting up MobLogic episodes "on their own from time to time." CBS will assign Campbell to something else within the company -- she's on contract -- and producers Adam Elend and Jeff Marks are now working on 'Novel Adventures,' a "soap opera/book club hybrid," according to Kafka.

And are Jerry and the board seriously going to make this decision without consulting Yahoo's new CEO?

We hope Yahoo and Time Warner execs are having fun hanging out together. Wake us up when it's over.

Bloomberg: Yahoo, facing dimming prospects for a takeover by Microsoft Corp., is continuing discussions to buy Time Warner Inc.'s AOL business, people familiar with the matter said.

Yahoo and Time Warner executives have met in the past few weeks and continue to negotiate over terms, said two people familiar with the situation. Time Warner would hand over AOL's advertising business to Yahoo in exchange for a stake in the combined company, said the people, who declined to be named because the talks aren't public.

A deal would bolster Yahoo's position in the market for so- called display advertising and add subscribers for services such as e-mail and instant messaging. Yahoo and AOL would need to cut as many as 3,000 jobs for the deal to pay off, said Jeff Lindsay, an analyst at Sanford C. Bernstein in New York.

'It's difficult and high-risk -- a merger between companies in similar activities but with very different cultures,' Lindsay said. 'It's not the best deal by far.'

Differences remain between the two sides and an agreement may not materialize, two other people familiar with the discussions said.

Filed under: Software Update, Apple TV

Apple has just released software update 2.3 for the Apple TV. Right now, we don't have the change log, but we'll update the post as soon as we get more information.

It is important to know that as with all other Apple TV firmware updates, running the update WILL remove any non-Apple TV software. So if you have installed the USB boxee hack you might want to wait on running the update.

Apple TV will eventually prompt you to run the automatic update, so boxee or XBMC users might want to check out the XBMC.org forums for information on disabling automatic updates.

If you are not using any additional software and would like to download this new update, you can do so by visiting Settings > General > Software Update from the main Apple TV menu. If you notice any new features, be sure to let us know in the comments.

Update: Apple has now posted a change log on their website. According to the knowledge base article, the following aspects of Apple TV have been updated:

AirTunes Streaming from Apple TV - Music can be streamed via AirTunes to Airport Express speakers or other Apple TVs in your house.

Third-party Remote Controls - Apple TV can now learn other remote controls and use them in addition to the Apple Remote.

Playlists - Playlists in iTunes that contain Movies, TV Shows, Podcasts, and Music Videos can now be seen on Apple TV.

Music Volume Control - Support for volume control in Music.

Thanks for the tip, Jeff.

TUAWApple TV update 2.3 released originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 19 Nov 2008 21:48:00 EST.
The CEO of Xobni, Jeff Bonforte is bent upon making Xobni a one stop access to every major web service you use. The CEO after pulling in LinkedIn has once again got his brainees working up and coming out with more services being integrated. That’s quite a lot, but is the end of it? I bet it’s not, there’s still Orkut, MySpace etc in the field.

Then go vote for your choice or write-in a name in the comments.

President and COO Peter Chernin. Chernin has the right resume: Experienced at running large and complex organizations; savvier than most in media about the Internet; able to make the kinds of dramatic decisions needed; and, perhaps best of all, signaling-via the Los Angeles Times-just this past week that he was open to leaving the powerful media and entertainment conglomerate for something new.

Writes Bits's Saul Hansell: "Yahoo doesn't need a chief executive so much as an editor in chief. And I mean the sort of imperial editor who has a vision of how to create an environment that lures in both readers and advertisers, like Tina Brown, Clay Felker or Adam Moss."

Writes PaidContent's Rafat Ali: "Whether it wants a Silicon Valley-engineering-culture-steeped executive; or a media-business-New York-centric executive who will be the ad-industry bridge; or for that matter, an entertainment executive from LA, who would help build Yahoo's brand reach and bring in the big bucks (Terry Semel experience will make it wary, though). That decision would help define the future of Yahoo, and whether it survives as an independent company"

For PE investors, there is also comfort in the fact that Yahoo can at anytime sell its Asian holdings for a ton of cash. They might be able to find some takers for their European properties as well."

With media, advertising, computing, and telecommunications merging into a single business, it strikes me that most of Yahoo's board and management are ill-equipped for the transition. Not Wilderotter, who's worked for Microsoft and AT&T and run Wink Communications, an interactive-TV company which she took from startup to IPO, through boom and bust."

Yahoo still has a powerfully large audience, and it's not going to outdo Google when it comes to letting the robots rule the roost."

This company should use this change in leadership to go back and open discussions with Microsoft about selling the company. This made sense when Microsoft made its initial offer last January at $31 and it makes sense (triply so) now."

Writes TechCrunch's Michael Arrington: "Who will be the next CEO? We speculated back in June that Jeff Mallet or Dan Rosensweig were possible candidates. Mallet wouldn't consider the job, we've heard. But Rosensweig would probably take it if offered. Whoever ends up with the job, let's just hope it's an outsider. Yahoo is being clear that they are considering internal candidates. President Sue Decker is likely being considered. But ex-execs we've spoken with say she was a big part of the problem at Yahoo, and if she takes over as CEO it will likely be more of the same."

The USB Implementers Forum, announced the USB 3.0 which has data-transfer speeds of up to 4.8Gbps — 10 times the speed provided by USB 2.0.

The new standard, also known as SuperSpeed USB, is also expected to be more power-efficient than its predecessor.

SuperSpeed USB is the next advancement in ubiquitous technology,Jeff Ravencraft, the president of the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF). Today’s consumers are using rich media and large digital files that need to be easily and quickly transferred from PCs to devices and vice versa. SuperSpeed USB meets the needs of everyone, from the tech-savvy executive to the average home user.

The new technology will be featured in tech products and ion variety of of other appliances in later part of 2009. The specification was designed to be backwards-compatible with earlier iterations of USB.

Many companies like Microsoft, HP, Intel have comes forward this time to put up with this technology both in developing the architecture but also in terms of adoption and deployment.

This following column was provided by Mark Davis. Mark is the author of Get Venture, a column designed to help entrepreneurs raise venture capital. He currently works at DFJ Gotham Ventures, a leading early-stage IT venture capital fund based in NYC.

I recently attended a networking event with Jeff Stewart, one of the founders of both Mimeo and Monitor110 (two of our DFJ Gotham portfolio companies). Over the course of the event, I heard Jeff offer some advice to a group of younger entrepreneurs. I found one of his points to be very compelling and thought I would share it here.

Jeff argued that trying to raise money from venture capitalists early in the life of the company is a great idea. While he thought securing capital was important, however, the money wasn’t the reason he encouraged the young entrepreneurs to engage in the VC fundraising process. The benefits he cited were as follows:

Enhance the plan: By pitching to VCs and getting feedback, an entrepreneur receives valuable feedback that helps him refine his business model, marketing strategy and other aspects of his plan.

Make connections: While VCs don’t make introductions for every entrepreneur that they meet, Jeff argued that the entrepreneurs would likely be connected to important customers, partners and future members of their teams through the investment community.

Learn how to pitch the company: By pitching early in the life of the company and pitching often, entrepreneurs learn how to sell their companies. From his perspective, selling in this way is not only important in fundraising, but is also critical for making key hires, securing partnerships and literally selling the company when the right buyer comes knocking.

For the second time this month, Barclays Capital’s Ben Reitzes reduced his target price for Apple shares. Citing lower handset expectation and increased pressure on higher priced products, Reitzes

Photo: Cishore/Flickr

cut his target price for Apple to $113, down from $121.

On Nov. 7, Reitzes trimmed his target price for Cupertino shares to $121 from $125.

The Barclays analyst told investors he expects a two percent drop in first quarter 2009 earnings to $9.4 billion, down from $9.6 billion. Apple may earn $34.4 billion for 2009, a drop from $35.7 billion previously expected. In fiscal 2010, Apple earnings could rise 18 percent to $40.55 billion, a drop from $42.8 billion early estimated.

The analyst Monday pointed to fellow analyst Jeff Kvall’s reduced estimate for global handset demand. Kvall now sees handset sales falling three percent for the fourth quarter, a near reversal from a four percent gain previously forecast.

Along with trimming his target price for Apple shares, Reitzes also lowered his iPhone projection to the first quarter of 2009 to 4.5 million units , down from 5 million.

Earlier this month, the analyst cut his iPhone estimate to 5 million handsets, lower than 6.2 million phones previously projected.

In addition to trimming iPhone growth, the analyst halved expected Mac sales for the first quarter to a four percent gain, down from a prior 8 percent upswing forecast.

“Ben Reitzes is simply being overly bearish,” independent Apple analyst and blogger Andy Zaky told Cult of Mac. Reitzes is not including Apple’s massive $880 million in deferred iPhone sales, Zaky explained. Such deferred income means Apple will have huge fiscal 2009 earnings before selling a single product. Apple earned $9.6 billion in fiscal 2008 when it had just $86 million in income differed from the first quarter.

Zaky initially estimates Apple will report selling around 8 million iPhones for the first quarter of 2009.

Joining that bullish estimate is Gene Munster, Piper Jaffray’s Apple watcher. Munster continues to expect 6.4 million iPhones for December and projects a 5-15 percent drop in iPhone growth for the quarter - far less than a 40 percent production drop projected earlier this month by Friedman, Billings and Ramsey.

After watching Apple store activity, Munster said Monday he noted 28 iPhone sales per store daily, a drop from 95 handsets per day in July.

That sales slip may be balanced by increased international demand for the Apple handset, Munster believes.

But as the credit markets begin to stabilize, GE CEO Jeff Immelt says the company might spend some of that cash bargain-hunting in media and other industries.

'There are going to be some opportunities in media consolidation, in infrastructure, oil and gas, aviation,' Immelt told the Financial Times. 'And my hope is that we can play in some of those as time goes on.'

Until now, the conventional wisdom was that GE wanted to sell NBC Universal and get out of the media business altogether. Sources told the FT that if the Olympics had not gone well for NBC, GE would have sold it.

Of course, while NBC ended up nailing the Olympics, one media company did beat it online. That's Yahoo, which by the way, Jeff, is looking for a buyer.
