This is probably the same line of thought that convinced Dario Volaric to create a back to basics edition of this Wallpaper Shifter application. This will probably appeal to many users who are looking for a lightweight wallpaper changer. The application picks a random wallpaper from a directory selected by the user and sets it as the active Windows wallpaper.

Once that has been done it closes down which means that it will not use any system resources from that point on. The application was designed to run during system startup but it can also be run when executed while Windows is running.

It comes with a few options to change the scale mode (automatic, crop, fit, center) and the background (default, blur, edge repeat) but that’s it. If you are looking for a one time a session wallpaper changer then this might be exactly what you are looking for.

Auto Delete (via Shell City) by Dario Volaric is a similar tool for Windows. The main difference is that it will run at system startup or when the user executes it manually. Another difference is that it will only delete files in the directory if they are older than the age specified by the user. The time frame ranges from 1 day to 1 year.

The user can include subfolders automatically, select if the files should be moved into the recycle or if a status window should be shown during the deletion.

The software program will automatically close after the job has ended. The main limitation of it is that it can only process one target folder. It is also unlikely that the software developer will update the program anytime soon because the last update dates back to 2005.

In a tragic story from NewTeeVee, we learn that a 19-year-old user of the online live-streaming video service Justin.TV has apparently commit suicide in front of an audience of fellow forum dwellers egging him on during the process. The death has been confirmed with the Broward County medical examiner and the timeline has been pieced together from several different forums that have chronicled the unfortunate series of events.

Most of the participants, as well as the deceased Abraham K. Biggs, were denizens of steroid information forum bodybuilding.com. Biggs, also known as CandyJunkie on the forum and Feels Like Ecstasy on Justin.TV, is alleged to have been a “well known troll” on the forum. He created a thread in the “misc” category yesterday afternoon detailing the amount of drugs he’s going to take with the intention to kill himself.

The moderators of the forum didn’t take his threats seriously “on account of his past trolling,” and other forum members continue to egg him on. At that point, Biggs posted his suicide note, which conveyed a general sense of depression and disappointment with life, not necessarily motivated by any hardship or cyber-bullying he may have received online.

At that point, Biggs turned on his Justin.TV channel, took the pills and laid down to go to sleep on his bed. After an unspecified amount of time, one forum member in particular from India became concerned by Biggs’ lack of movement and hunted down the actual name and location. He then pleaded with the forum to call the Miami-Dade police department, but was met with cynical replies declining to intervene on account of his “troll status.”

After several unsuccessful emails by the forum member to Miami-Dade police, he borrowed his father’s mobile and spoke to a number of policemen who didn’t take the call seriously, but directed him to the Broward County Sheriff’s Department.

Approximately an hour later, Biggs’ door was busted down and BSO and paramedics arrived on the scene. After quickly confirming his status, covered the camera.

This Isn’t a Result of Cyber Bullying, but the Behavior is No Less Atrocious.

We’re no stranger to covering suicides that take place with a large social component, and as chilling as it may be, this sort of thing will cease to be headline news in the future and actually be regarded as commonplace.

In 2004, students of Japanese culture were shocked to learn of online suicide clubs amongst the youth there. Over the the summer, I covered here at Mashable a series of suicides that were highly documented by virtue of their Bebo pages.

Children and young people committing suicide is not new.  Doing it in full view of the public by virtue of their social networking profiles or even live on camera as with Biggs is. This is simply a side-effect of our always on culture.

It’s easy to look for bad people or the misbehaved as scapegoats, and in this particular instance, there is plenty of blame to go around.  A screen capture of the chat room next to Biggs’ camera shows a shocking disregard for his feelings and of human life in general. Those of us who’ve been denizens of the Internet for any length of time know this is nothing new.

Events such as this are bait for politicians and empathetic impetus for well-meaning citizens alike to come together with righteous fury for social change and try to either pass a law or convict a suspect to “right the wrong,” “find justice,” and “prevent it from occurring again.”

I won’t pretend to know the pain of Biggs’ family, or any other family of a suicide victim, but as I said in the aftermath of the Bebo Suicide Cult, technology isn’t the demon here, only a conduit for the symptoms. It is the portal that can allow us assist our loved ones and perhaps spot a tragedy like this some distance off. Social media and social networking is meant to facilitate real live human interaction, which in the case of the depressed and suicidal can be what the doctor ordered.

Orb Networks has officially announced the availability of their OrbLive 2.0 app for iPhone/iPod touch.

OrbLive enables users to stream media content from their computer — music, internet radio stations, videos, photos, webcam streams, and even live TV (with a TV Tuner) — to their touch device over Wi-Fi and 2G/3G cellular networks. Working in conjunction with a free Windows PC application, OrbLive removes the limitations of hard drive capacities and by utilizing Orb’s “powerful networking capabilities” allows users access to their entire media library anywhere they can connect to the internet. The app also gives users the ability to preview all their Office documents (docs, xls, pdf, ppt, txt file formats are all supported). However, it should be noted that since OrbLive is dependent on the server application to be running, users will have to launch Boot Camp or their choice of virtualization software to make use of the app on their device, though Orb did say they are working on a OS X and Linux version.

Originally released as a jailbreak app, OrbLive 2.0, with the advent of the App Store, brings the myriad of streaming options to those uninterested in jailbreaking their device. The app is available now in two flavors, the full version for $9.99 and a free version that limits you to three randomly selected files of each media type, but beyond that neither require any recurring service fees.

In my brief testing of the application, it worked exactly as advertised and allowed me access to all the media files from my WinXP partition with just a few clicks. The video streaming, though, left a lot to be desired, even over a local Wi-Fi network as it appears to be transcoded and thus was severely pixelated at times. You also couldn’t fast-foward/rewind. However, despite these minor quibbles, OrbLive is a boon to those with large media libraries, those indecisive about what to sync, and of course those that interested in watching live TV on their touch device.

Basically the sites in the community will be represented by Kaboose for online advertising. Kaboose self-reports that the total community increased Kaboose's online inventory by 30%.

If we assume that the reports are right and online advertising will drop over the next year, sites that can work together to sell ads might be in a better position than those selling independently. As a former large media buyer, I can tell you it's always easier to buy one campaign on a network versus multiple smaller ad buys.
