While earnings for many fell this quarter, Opera Software is one of the lucky few to register success. Its stocks rose by over 11% and exceeded the estimates put out for the quarter. Although the web browsers market share has taken a plunge to trail Chrome that now leads it with 0.8% marketshare. However Opera’ has seen a tremendous uptake of its mobile browser which has resulted in increased revenues as well. And naturally this increase in revenues has trickled down to the valuation of Opera stocks which registered an increase of 1.9 kroner to touch 18.5 kroner and look quiet bullish for the time being.

–News–

I Want Sandy & Stikkit Close
Two popular online productivity applications, I Want Sandy and Stikkit, have announced that they will be shutting down soon. Both services are run by the same company and recently got acquired by Twitter. It was hinted that some of the technology would be integrated into Twitter later on.

Google Admits to Breaking App Store Terms
After a little searching around a group of individuals managed to find out that Google had used undocumented API’s in their iPhone application, which is against Apple’s SDK rules. There’s been no word from Apple yet regarding whether Google will have to change how their program works.

eBay’s Traffic Plummeting
According to some data eBay’s traffic in the U.S. has been sharply dropping. In October 2007 they were receiving 13.5 million unique visitors, but in October 2008 they received just 9.1 million unique visitors. And it continues to drop from one month to another. Will eBay be able to come back?

Apple Finally Got Safari Right on the iPhone
Looks like I’m not the only one noticing a dramatically improved Safari browser on the iPhone 2.2 firmware. I used to see Safari crashes several times each day, but haven’t had a single hiccup since the iPhone 2.2 firmware update. Yay!

Google Maps Updated
Google has updated their maps service with a refreshed interface, and spruced up the Street View a bit. Now when using Street View the imagery will take up the entire map area on the screen instead of being contained in a bubble. This is a dramatic improvement for anyone that uses the Street View regularly.

G1 Gets Visual Voicemail and Opera Mini
The T-Mobile G1 powered by Google’s Android operating system now has two long awaited apps: visual voicemail and Opera Mini. The only downside is that the visual voicemail service is run by a third-party, but it is still free.

Watch Out for the New Digsby Installer
I’ve been a huge fan of the Digsby instant messenger client ever since it became available, and have managed to get dozens of friends, family, and co-workers using their software. Now, however, they are doing something I’m not all that fond of… asking users to install toolbars and other things during installation. I’ll continue to recommend their software, but I’ll be sure to warn people about the things it will try to install.

Opera only commands 0.7% of the desktop browser market -- already trailing the much-newer Google (GOOG) Chrome -- which has 0.8%. But that's not where the revenue comes from: Opera is reporting strong growth in license revenues for its Opera Mini mobile browser.

Bloomberg: Shares climbed as much as 1.9 kroner, or 11 percent, to 18.5 kroner, and were at 18.2 kroner as of 9:31 a.m. local time, the highest intraday level since Sept. 12, valuing the company at 2.2 billion kroner ($310 million).

Net income for the three months ended Sept. 31 rose to 33.3 million kroner [$4.7 million] from 4.65 million kroner a year earlier, Opera reported to the Oslo stock exchange. Analysts on average had estimated profit at 15.5 million kroner.

You see I’ve already gone through a Tocco from Samsung and a Storm from BlackBerry and while I initially gave the Storm quite a good review I’m afraid it ended up going back. It’s replacement however is a great phone. The N96 from Nokia is not touch screen and I think this is actually one of it’s greatest benefits. The problems that I had typing out a text message on the other two phones went away completely and I was able to fire out messages and Tweets at the same speed as I could on my N95. So lets look in more detail.

Firstly I’m going to look at the actual call quality and the phone functionality. During my use of it so far I’ve had no problems with calls with both myself and my caller coming through loud and clear. The phone also doesn’t drop calls and picks up excellent reception in areas where the Storm couldn’t find anything. The 3G network from Vodafone seems to be fast in Belfast City Centre but disappears very quickly as you move out of the city. This is however a Vodafone problem and not a phone issue. Texts are very easy to type and e-mail can be setup as long as you know the connection information for your provider. Unfortunately the N96 only supports POP3 and IMAP so no Live Mail for me. Since Live Mail will be introducing POP3 shortly this is no big deal and I’m happy to wait.

The browsing experience on the N96 is probably it’s weakest point. While the large screen does make website viewable and the cursor makes them easy enough to navigate the experience is certainly not as good as that on the touch screen phones and certainly not as good as the iPod Touch. The mobile versions of sites display well though and since I only ever use the Mobile Live Mail, BBC News and Google Reader sites I’m happy with what I get. You can choose to download Opera Mini but this is something I’ve yet to do.

The application list for Nokia is starting to grow with the addition of iPlayer from BBC really being a huge selling point for the N96. I tested iPlayer on the phone in Belfast City Centre and the quality was excellent with absolutely no lag and I was able to watch through an entire episode of Top Gear. I also added Twibble application which gives me access to Twitter on the move and I’ve found it a joy to use so far. I is certainly one of the best Java best Twitter applications and one I would recommend for the N96. Games are also starting to become more plentiful on this phone with the N-Gage application for running some pretty high spec and attractive games. I’ve only really had an opportunity to play the demo games so far but I’ve been impressed with what I’ve played. Nokia certainly do not have the application variety that Apple’s Application Store has and I would like to see an increase in the number of apps that can be accessed from the central Download location.

The phone itself is well built with a 3.5 inch headphone jack, memory card slot for extending the already plentiful onboard memory, USB port for computer hookup and sync with Outlook as well as a 5Mp camera which can take some excellent images. The lack of a lens cover is a pity so be careful not to scratch the lens. The keys are flat and similar to the Motorola Razor design which is not entirely my cup of tea but still they are much easier to use than any touch screen phone. Overall the N96 is an excellent evolution from the N95. It may not be a massive step forward but it is a step forward and with the exceptional multimedia power of this phone Nokia have a real competitor that should attract everyone who still has doubts about the touch screen devices.

SCORE: 5/5

Jon Hicks from Hicks Design has released the Helvetireader skin for Google Reader. Helvetireader takes a minimalist approach, masking many of Google Readers abilities, creating a simple and very easy to read interface to Google’s excellent RSS feed reader.

Google Reader has been my RSS reader of choice since I made the switch from Bloglines last year. This new skin makes the site seem brand new, and makes it even easier for Reader to stand alone as desktop app with Fluid or Prism. To set up Helvetireader with Fluid, create a new Site Specific Browser for Google Reader, then launch the newly created app. Next, click on the script menu item, and select “New Userscript”. If you have the Developer Tools installed, this will launch Dashcode and allow you to edit the userscript. Just paste in this:

Save your script, and relaunch the Fluid Google Reader App. After a second, the CSS from Helvetireader will kick in, and you’ll have a brand new look and feel to Google Reader. The CSS is actually hosted on the helvetireader.com web site, so you won’t have to modify your settings as the code is updated. This script is just as easy to set up on Firefox or Opera, and can be used with Safari or Camino with a little tweaking. Hicks expects this theme to be used by 10 people at the most, I expect it will be much more popular than that.

No, not really. Stainless is a multi-process OS X browser inspired by Google Chrome. If you haven’t heard of Chrome - well, it is only the most popular, latest addition from Google to the existing line of internet browsers. Unlike other browsers like Firefox, Safari and Opera that try to surpass each other with cool new features and an endless repository of plugins, Google decided that their new browser would be a little different from the mainstream browsers.

It is revolutionary because they simplified it.

They stripped the User Interface down to its bare essentials; made it snappier, more efficient and sophisticated on the inside; then delivered it to the public. And we love it. When I say “we”, I actually mean “they”. That’s because I use a Mac and Google hasn’t quite got the OS X version of Chrome up to speed yet. However, all Mac users can rest assured that they are working on it.

So as usual, Mac users will have to wait it out while everyone else on Windows enjoy their new toy. Luckily, a small group of developers came up with an imitation of Chrome, a Chrome-sque browser if you will, for OS X.

Although it is merely a technological demo, there are 3 words I can utter about Stainless. It has potential - and I’m not the only one who shares this opinion. Most of us who have taken Stainless for a ride will agree that it is quite usable, considering that it is still in its very early stages of development. I’m guessing that it is because it is inspired by Chrome, it is a fair bit more stable, quicker and simpler to use - and that appeals to most people who are stuck with the productivity-driven mindset of “Do more with less time”.

So how does Stainless compare to Chrome? I have no idea. I refuse to run Chrome on Windows or try Crossover Chromium. I want to maintain that purity of excitement and amazement when I run Chrome of OS X for the first time after Google is ready to dish it to us. For the time being, Stainless is the furthest I will ever get to Chrome.

From the screenshots, I assume that Stainless looks a bit like Chrome. It has a very simple user interface: separate address bars for each tab, forward/back/refresh buttons and a New Tab plus (+) sign. Like Chrome, it also comes with its own Process Manager and because it is a multi-process browser, that means each separate browser tab is actually an individual process (not a collective one like Safari, for instance). If a particular tab is irresponsive, you can close that tab without affecting others. This also means that performance is increased since each browser tab is processed separately.

Surfing is noticeably more responsive and quicker. The whole browser ‘feels’ lighter than Safari, definitely. There is also an option to open a Private Browsing Window where no history, cache or other information are stored. Personally, I don’t see the point of the private browsing mode for the time being - I don’t think Stainless stores browsing history just yet! It doesn’t even have a bookmark manager and it isn’t integrated with Keychain so usernames and passwords aren’t stored.

Overall, Stainless has managed to impress me, even if it is only a demo. I can’t even begin to fathom what Google Chrome on OS X is capable of.

If you want to take Stainless for a spin, you can download it here. Take note, it is for Leopard only. For those of you who have actually used Chrome, let me know how Stainless compares. I can only read your experiences since I want to keep myself a Chrome-virgin.

Windows does seem to have the habit of changing the default browser back to Internet Explorer from time to time. Many web browsers do also ask the user during installation if he wants to change the default browser. The difference between the default web browser and an installed browser is that the default browser is being used to open html and htm files on the system. Clicking on a link in a application will launch the link in the default browser.

Browser Tray Switch by Mouser has been designed with a second aspect in mind. Mouser is using the software program to define a default browser in Windows that is not allowed to connect to the Internet. This ensures that malicious software programs cannot launch the default browser. If he needs to access the Internet with the default browser he simply switches it using his software program for the time it is needed.

Another simple application for the program would be to set the default browser in Windows. Many users do not like fiddling around in the Windows Registry and this application provides an easy intuitive way to do that.

The application will automatically create a backup of the settings during the first startup. It will also automatically detect the installed web browsers (unless they are portable) and add them to the right-click menu of the system tray application.

JSXGraph is a cross-browser library to display
interactive geometry in a Web browser. It is
implemented in JavaScript and uses SVG and VML.
The following browsers are supported: Mozilla
Firefox, Opera, Safari, Google Chrome, and
Microsoft Internet Explorer, though there are
still some issues with Internet Explorer. JSXGraph
is easy to embed and has a small footprint: only
50 kB if embedded in a Web page. No plugins are
required. JSXGraph uses SVG and VML.

Many bugfixes, code cleanups, and performance improvements, especially for Internet Explorer. Among the new features are spline interpolation and other numerical algorithms, as well as ticked lines. JSXGraph constructions are now at least displayed on the iPhone, but event handling on the iPhone is not yet implemented.

Mozilla is on the verge of releasing Firefox 3.1 Beta 2, and it’s quite possible that in the next month or two the final version will be pushed out the door. A major new release like this means that some of your favorite extensions might not be working, and Mozilla doesn’t want that to happen. With over 1 billion extension downloads they are now reaching out to developers asking them to update their extensions for the upcoming release.

Being an extension developer myself I’ve tried to keep CyberSearch up-to-date and functional with all nightly releases of Firefox 3.1. In fact we just updated the extension over the weekend (version 1.0.7) to fix yet another change Mozilla made in the nightly builds rendering our extension inoperable.

Mozilla has assembled a compatibility chart that looks at all of their extensions, and determines how many of them are not yet compatible with Firefox 3.1. I’m not, however, quite sure about the accuracy of the chart. If you view the detailed report you can see a list of all the extensions and what version of Firefox they currently work with. CyberSearch isn’t even on that list.

This is a two-way street though. Developers need to start prepping for Firefox 3.1, and at the same time Mozilla needs to get better about approving new releases. CyberSearch 1.0.7 was just approved this week after about 2 months of submitting different updates, and so it looks like Mozilla has some catching up to do. Just make sure you check the homepage of your favorite extensions, because they may already have a Firefox 3.1-compatible release.
