The new TypePad comments are a lot more attractive than before.

Six Apart's paid, hosted blogging service, TypePad, is getting improved community features. The first thing most users will notice is a new blog commenting system. It has both a cleaner display of comments (with icons for the comments, WordPress-style), as well as a simpler comment entry interface. Users can also reply to particular comments and the system supports one level of threading.

The updated comments service hooks into TypePad's new profile system. Commenters with TypePad IDs get a place that collects all the comments they leave on all TypePad comment-enabled blogs, and users can add feeds from their accounts on Flickr, Twitter, Friendfeed, Digg, and about 45 other services. That makes the profile pages a lot more dynamic and interesting.

The TypePad comment system can be embedded on non-Movable Type blogs. The service can automatically install on WordPress.org, Blogger, and Tumblr sites. HTML code is provided to put the comment system on other blogs.

This new comment ecosystem is certainly an improvement over the previous version. But bloggers have other very good commenting systems to choose from. I favor Disqus, for instance. Although I do like the new TypePad system, I don't see a reason to install it on my WordPress blog ProPRTips, (and actually, I couldn't if I wanted to--users of WordPress.com-hosted blogs can't get far enough under the hood to make the switch; bloggers using WordPress.org software hosted elsewhere can, however).

The new system is certainly an improvement, and more than that it's interesting to see Six Apart continue to spin core functionality out of its paid products and offer it to the world for free. Previously, of course, the company made Movable Type open source and free. The company clearly hopes that exposure to these products will make revenue-generating products more attractive. Whatever the motivation, these are serious and full-featured products, now available for nothing, and I'm cool with that.

In their own words

“The Venyo Project: to build a free and universal online reputation management tool.”

Why it might be a killer

It is a practical way of knowing who is who on the WWW.

Some questions

What features are going to be added in future revisions? How can the site promote itself to reach a wider audience?

What it does

The lack of trust that characterizes several human endeavors was somehow amplified when it came to the Internet, as face to face interaction was lost and all that was left were texts or images that failed to connect people in the same way.

Venyo is an initiative that attempts to address that situation, and the time is definitely ripe if we take into account the developments of collaborative services that Web 2.0 has brought along.

What Venyo intends to do is create a free and universal tool for expressing the online reputation of individuals. This reliability rating would give every internaut a good idea of who he is dealing with instantly, and it would go by the name of Vindex.

Venyo seeks to become an independent and impartial organization that will look after such index, and make relationships over the web flow more smoothly.

It can’t be denied that this is an interesting project, and you can join it right now just by signing up for free and start building your online reputation. Upon registering, you will not only be able to be found but also to look up others online and see where they stand.

Whether Venyo will have the transcendence it hopes to achieve remains moot, but it is commendable to see endeavors that aim to make experiencing the web a more transparent endeavor come along.

Link: http://www.venyo.org
Our Review: http://www.killerstartups.com/Web20/venyo-org-let-your-reputation-speak-for-yourself

The third Thursday of every November has been designated the Great American Smokeout by the American Cancer Society since 1977. While it’s important to quit smoking the other 364 days a year, designating one day allows everyone to rally around and draw more attention to the cause. From websites, to a mobile and even Twitter tool, here are nine resources to help you quit smoking.

So, what are you waiting for? Are you going to be one of the people this year putting down your cigarette for good? Done it before and want to share your experience? Let us know in the comments!

SymPy is a symbolic manipulation package, written in pure Python. Its aim is to become a full featured CAS in Python, while keeping the code as simple as possible in order to be comprehensible and easily extensible. Currently, Sympy has only around 1600 lines of code (including comments), and its capabilities include basic arithmetics, basic simplification, series expansion, functions (exp, ln, sin, cos, tan, etc.), differentiation, integration (currently it can do only very simple integrals), basic substitution, arbitrary precision integers and rationals, standard (Python) floats, basic complex numbers, and symbolic limits.

Changes:
Ported to Python2.6 (all tests pass) and Jython (all tests pass except those depending on the "ast" module). True division was fixed (all tests pass with the "-Qnew" Python option). buildbot.sympy.org was created; sympy is now regularly tested on Python 2.4, 2.5, and 2.6 on both i386 and amd64. py.bench: py.test-based benchmarking. bin/test: a simple py.test-like testing framework, without external dependencies and with nicely colored output. Most limits now work. Factorization over Z[x] was greatly improved. Piecewise function was added. nsimplify() was implemented. Symbols and var syntax were unified. C code printing.
Right now, we don't have the change log, but we'll update the post as soon as we get more information.

It is important to know that as with all other Apple TV firmware updates, running the update WILL remove any non-Apple TV software. So if you have installed the USB boxee hack you might want to wait on running the update.

Apple TV will eventually prompt you to run the automatic update, so boxee or XBMC users might want to check out the XBMC.org forums for information on disabling automatic updates.

If you are not using any additional software and would like to download this new update, you can do so by visiting Settings > General > Software Update from the main Apple TV menu. If you notice any new features, be sure to let us know in the comments.

Update: Apple has now posted a change log on their website. According to the knowledge base article, the following aspects of Apple TV have been updated:

AirTunes Streaming from Apple TV - Music can be streamed via AirTunes to Airport Express speakers or other Apple TVs in your house.

Third-party Remote Controls - Apple TV can now learn other remote controls and use them in addition to the Apple Remote.

Playlists - Playlists in iTunes that contain Movies, TV Shows, Podcasts, and Music Videos can now be seen on Apple TV.

Music Volume Control - Support for volume control in Music.

Thanks for the tip, Jeff.

TUAWApple TV update 2.3 released originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 19 Nov 2008 21:48:00 EST.
xorriso creates, loads, manipulates, and writes ISO 9660 filesystem images with Rock Ridge extensions.
It can load the management information of existing ISO images, and it writes the session results to optical media or to filesystem objects. This is the standalone version that incorporates the libraries of libburnia-project.org and thus depends only on Linux 2.4 (or later), libc, and libpthread. No separate mkisofs and no CD/DVD burn program are needed.

Changes:
A bug in libisofs affected images that were generated by mkisofs. If expanded by xorriso sessions, files of size 0 could hide the content of their neighbors. Another bug prevented the SYSLINUX script isohybrid from creating an MBR that would really boot.

Top 10 reasons for computer crash. Your computer pop ups something on the screen – Fatal error: the system has become unstable or is busy. If you click Enter to return to Windows or press the Control-Alt-Delete buttons to restart your computer, you will lose any unsaved works and information in all application that still open.

When you face the Blue Screen of Death, what do you have to do? How to prevent computer crash from happening again?

Conflict Between Hardware

Top reason for Windows system crashes is confliction of hardware. Each hardware device in your computer communicates to other devices though IRQ or interrupt request channel. These channels are formed to be unique for each device.

For instance, a printer often a printer connects internally on IRQ 7 and the keyboard uses IRQ1. Each item will try to keep a single IRQ channel for itself.

The conflict starts when devices in a computer are not installed properly as two of the devices might share the same IRQ channel. Crash happens when you try to use both devices that share the same IRQ number. One step to check if hardware conflict happens in your PC is through the following way:

Go to Start. Then click Settings. Choose Control Panel. Then click on System. Select Device Manager.

Usually there is a yellow exclamation mark (!) appears next to a problematic device. Highlight computer (in Device Manager) and click Properties to see the IRQ numbers used by your PC. If two devices using the same channel, the IRQ number appears twice.

Sometimes a device might share an IRQ with something described as 'IRQ holder for PCI steering'. This can be ignored. The best way to fix this problem is to remove the problem device and reinstall it.

Sometimes you may have to find more recent drivers on the internet to make the device function properly. A good resource is www.driverguide.com. If the device is a soundcard, or a modem, it can often be fixed by moving it to a different slot on the motherboard (be careful about opening your computer, as you may void the warranty).

When working inside a computer you should switch it off, unplug the mains lead and touch an unpainted metal surface to discharge any static electricity.

To be fair to Mcft, the problem with IRQ numbers is not of its making. It is a legacy problem going back to the first PC designs using the IBM 8086 chip. Initially there were only eight IRQs. Today there are 16 IRQs in a PC. It is easy to run out of them. There are plans to increase the number of IRQs in future designs.

Bad Ram (Random Access Memory)

Ram problems might bring on the blue screen of death with a message saying Fatal Exception Error. A fatal error indicates a serious hardware problem. Sometimes it may mean a part is damaged and will need replacing.

But a fatal error caused by Ram might be caused by a mismatch of chips. For example, mixing 70-nanosecond (70ns) Ram with 60ns Ram will usually force the computer to run all the Ram at the slower speed. This will often crash the machine if the Ram is overworked.

One way around this problem is to enter the BIOS settings and increase the wait state of the Ram. This can make it more stable. Another way to troubleshoot a suspected Ram problem is to rearrange the Ram chips on the motherboard, or take some of them out. Then try to repeat the circumstances that caused the crash. When handling Ram try not to touch the gold connections, as they can be easily damaged.

Parity error messages also refer to Ram. Modern Ram chips are either parity (ECC) or non parity (non-ECC). It is best not to mix the two types, as this can be a cause of trouble.

EMM386 error messages refer to memory problems but may not be connected to bad Ram. This may be due to free memory problems often linked to old Dos-based programmes.

BIOS settings

Every motherboard is supplied with a range of chipset settings that are decided in the factory. A common way to access these settings is to press the F2 or delete button during the first few seconds of a boot-up.

Once inside the BIOS, great care should be taken. It is a good idea to write down on a piece of paper all the settings that appear on the screen. That way, if you change something and the computer becomes more unstable, you will know what settings to revert to.

A common BIOS error concerns the CAS latency. This refers to the Ram. Older EDO (extended data out) Ram has a CAS latency of 3. Newer SDRam has a CAS latency of 2. Setting the wrong figure can cause the Ram to lock up and freeze the computer's display.

Mcft Windows is better at allocating IRQ numbers than any BIOS. If possible set the IRQ numbers to Auto in the BIOS. This will allow Windows to allocate the IRQ numbers (make sure the BIOS setting for Plug and Play OS is switched to 'yes' to allow Windows to do this.).

Hard disk drives

After a few weeks, the information on a hard disk drive starts to become piecemeal or fragmented. It is a good idea to defragment the hard disk every week or so, to prevent the disk from causing a screen freeze. Go to

Start. Select Programs. Then click on Accessories. Then choose System Tool. Then click on Disk Defragmenter.

This will start the procedure. You will be unable to write data to the hard drive (to save it) while the disk is defragmenting, so it is a good idea to schedule the procedure for a period of inactivity using the Task Scheduler.

The Task Scheduler should be one of the small icons on the bottom right of the Windows opening page (the desktop).

Some lockups and screen freezes caused by hard disk problems can be solved by reducing the read-ahead optimisation. This can be adjusted by going to

Click on Start. Then choose Settings. Then Control Panel. Go to System Icon. Then to Performance. Select File System. Choose Hard Disk.

Hard disks will slow down and crash if they are too full. Do some housekeeping on your hard drive every few months and free some space on it. Open the Windows folder on the C drive and find the Temporary Internet Files folder. Deleting the contents (not the folder) can free a lot of space.

Empty the Recycle Bin every week to free more space. Hard disk drives should be scanned every week for errors or bad sectors. Go to

Go to Start. Select Programs. Then Accessories. Click on System Tools. Choose Scan Disk.

Otherwise assign the Task Scheduler to perform this operation at night when the computer is not in use.

Fatal OE exceptions and VXD errors

Fatal OE exception errors and VXD errors are often caused by video card problems.
These can often be resolved easily by reducing the resolution of the video display.

Go to Start. Choose Settings. Click on Control Panel. Click on Display. Choose Settings.

Here you should slide the screen area bar to the left. Take a look at the colour settings on the left of that window. For most desktops, high colour 16-bit depth is adequate.

If the screen freezes or you experience system lockups it might be due to the video card. Make sure it does not have a hardware conflict.

Go to Start. Select Settings. Choose Control Panel. Click on System. Choose Device Manager.

Here, select the + beside Display Adapter. A line of text describing your video card should appear. Select it (make it blue) and press properties. Then select Resources and select each line in the window. Look for a message that says No Conflicts.

If you have video card hardware conflict, you will see it here. Be careful at this point and make a note of everything you do in case you make things worse.

The way to resolve a hardware conflict is to uncheck the Use Automatic Settings box and hit the Change Settings button. You are searching for a setting that will display a No Conflicts message.

Another useful way to resolve video problems is to go to

* Start-Settings-Control Panel-System-Performance-Graphics

Here you should move the Hardware Acceleration slider to the left. As ever, the most common cause of problems relating to graphics cards is old or faulty drivers (a driver is a small piece of software used by a computer to communicate with a device).

Look up your video card's manufacturer on the internet and search for the most recent drivers for it.

Viruses

Often the first sign of a virus infection is instability. Some viruses erase the boot sector of a hard drive, making it impossible to start. This is why it is a good idea to create a Windows start-up disk. Go to

* Start-Settings-Control Panel-Add/Remove Programs

Here, look for the Start Up Disk tab. Virus protection requires constant vigilance.

A virus scanner requires a list of virus signatures in order to be able to identify viruses. These signatures are stored in a DAT file. DAT files should be updated weekly from the website of your anti virus software manufacturer.

An excellent anti virus program is AVG which you can get it for free for non-commercial usage.

Printers

The action of sending a document to print creates a bigger file, often called a postscript file.

Printers have only a small amount of memory, called a buffer. This can be easily overloaded. Printing a document also uses a considerable amount of CPU power. This will also slow down the computer's performance.

If the printer is trying to print unusual characters, these might not be recognised, and can crash the computer. Sometimes printers will not recover from a crash because of confusion in the buffer. A good way to clear the buffer is to unplug the printer for ten seconds. Booting up from a powerless state, also called a cold boot, will restore the printer's default settings and you may be able to carry on.

Software

A common cause of computer crash is faulty or badly-installed software. Often the problem can be cured by uninstalling the software and then reinstalling it. Use Norton Uninstall or Uninstall Shield to remove an application from your system properly. This will also remove references to the programme in the System Registry and leaves the way clear for a completely fresh copy.

The System Registry can be corrupted by old references to obsolete software that you thought was uninstalled. Use Reg Cleaner by Jouni Vuorio to clean up the System Registry and remove obsolete entries. It works on Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 98 SE (Second Edition), Windows Millennium Edition (ME), NT4 and Windows 2000.

Read the instructions and use it carefully so you don't do permanent damage to the Registry. If the Registry is damaged you will have to reinstall your operating system. Reg Cleaner can be obtained from www.jv16.org

Often a Windows problem can be resolved by entering Safe Mode. This can be done during start-up. When you see the message "Starting Windows" press F4. This should take you into Safe Mode.

Safe Mode loads a minimum of drivers. It allows you to find and fix problems that prevent Windows from loading properly.

Sometimes installing Windows is difficult because of unsuitable BIOS settings. If you keep getting SUWIN error messages (Windows setup) during the Windows installation, then try entering the BIOS and disabling the CPU internal cache. Try to disable the Level 2 (L2) cache if that doesn't work.

Remember to restore all the BIOS settings back to their former settings following installation.

Overheating

Central processing units (CPUs) are usually equipped with fans to keep them cool. If the fan fails or if the CPU gets old it may start to overheat and generate a particular kind of error called a kernel error. This is a common problem in chips that have been overclocked to operate at higher speeds than they are supposed to.

One remedy is to get a bigger better fan and install it on top of the CPU. Specialist cooling fans/heatsinks are available from www.computernerd.com or www.coolit.com

CPU problems can often be fixed by disabling the CPU internal cache in the BIOS. This will make the machine run more slowly, but it should also be more stable.

Power supply problems

With all the new construction going on around the country the steady supply of electricity has become disrupted. A power surge or spike can crash a computer as easily as a power cut.

If this has become a nuisance for you then consider buying a uninterrupted power supply (UPS). This will give you a clean power supply when there is electricity, and it will give you a few minutes to perform a controlled shutdown in case of a power cut.

It is a good investment if your data are critical, because a power cut will cause any unsaved data to be lost.

Don't have time to read? <nbsp></nbsp>
Many thanks to Karen Blakeman for her recent post on Ten Science Search Engines:

That post has led me to roam around the Web catching up and educating myself on what has been happening in science search in the past several months. Well, first of all Karen pointed out that she was referring to the post on the subject featured on the Spineless? Blog of the British institution, Heriot-Watt University. Now, anyone who is considering setting up a library blog or indeed any blog in the information sciences might want to take a look at that one. It is handsome, interesting, informative and well-organized. Indeed, I am going to shamelessly crib from that single post for several days running.

For instance, one of the search engines listed is Scitopia.org which has been around for a while but which I have not really explored. And I noticed that it is says “Powered by DeepWeb” so I popped over to the site of that firm, Deep Web Technologies which led to this useful post Introducing Science.gov 5.0.

Ironically, when I clicked on the link there that reads, “Science.gov 5.0 is now available!” I got the error message, “Firefox can’t find the server at www.science-dot-gov.” And Internet Explorer says more or less the same thing, “Sorry, we couldn’t find http://www.science-dot-gov/index.html.” I imagine that Science.gov Product Manager Valerie Allen is working on that little glitch, as I have just left on her post a note about it.

Everybody interested in science search should read Ms. Allen’s post, as she discusses several interesting changes to Science.gov, some of which will set some teeth on edge, especially among those who remain leery of Wikipedia’s increasing presence in scholarship and consider its growing influence as a distressing sign of dumbing down, decline of standards and the fall of civilization generally. RSS is making its presence felt in Science.gov 5.0, as is the growth in the use the of online citation tools.

And boy is mastery of those a huge part of librarianship these days, as I am learning in my studies in the FastTrack MLIS program at the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Information Sciences–and for those of you out there in library jobs and considering getting your master’s in library science, applications for admission to the FastTrack MLIS program (Summer 2009 Term) are due by February 16, 2009: An MLIS is not a bad thing for those fascinated by search to have—many of the leading commentators on search are former librarians or still librarians or work in libraries (e.g., Gary Price, Greg Notess, Mary Ellen Bates, David Rothman (of http://davidrothman.net).

But getting back to what Ms. Allen says. She says:

“…If you’re a frequent user of Science.gov, you may have had a hand in the recent enhancements. Many of the new Science.gov 5.0 technical features are in response to past suggestions from Science.gov users. Topic “clustering” is available on the Science.gov results so you can drill down into subtopics to focus your research. Presented alongside the Science.gov results is auxiliary information from the AAAS EurekAlert! Science News and from Wikipedia. Also new with this version is the ability to download search results into your citation management software – a specific request from the library community. You will also notice a new Alerts interface which allows you to set up an ATOM or RSS feed of your Alerts.”

Finding Ms. Allen’s posting on this useful reading, I decided to check out more recent entries on the OTSI (Office of Scientific & Technical Information) blog. There has been some excitement about the new global science gateway WorldWideScience.org and this post is important reading for those who care about medicine and science: China Joins the WorldWideScience Alliance: Why This is Important.

When I was growing up in Corvallis, Oregon my family hosted many of the first graduate students allowed by the People’s Republic of China to study at Oregon State University and I taught English in China for a year in the 1990s and have always been impressed by the brilliance of Chinese scientists and the struggles they have overcome such as the simple lack of books and basic lab and computer resources. It is so heartening that at long last the efforts of scientist like these and elsewhere in the developing world will now be rendered findable and open to Western scientists and that the latter are becoming more open to citing papers from foreign institutions. Noble and important work Brian Hitson, OSTI Associate Director for Administration & Information Services! Those who suffer from devastating illnesses and those of us who love such people thank you and wish you well in your work.

I then surfed back to the Web Site of Deep Web Technologies and decided to click on some of their press releases, which led to me to this one:

I tried the tool mentioned because I was curious to see what results on amyotrophic lateral sclerosis would come up in this, the DOD’s Defense Technical Information Center’s new online research portal, given that veterans appear to have a higher incidence of ALS than the general population. I got an interesting result from the National Research Council Canada Canada Institute for Scientific and Technical Information and it is nice to see results from WorldWideScience.org already appearing so helpfully in results in various search engines. This portal might be of interest to veterans and their family members who wish to investigate the possibility that health problems might be connected to military service. It is certainly something those in the defense industry will employ.

Deep Web Technologies is doing some amazing things for its many clients in science and business search. Check out its site. It’s a comer. No, scratch that—it a well established leader in search technology.

These are just some of the things I have been exploring as a result of Ms. Blakeman’s edifying post.

Hatta is a small wiki engine for use inside a
Mercurial repository. It can run locally and
doesn't require any configuration; it's just a
single Python file. It can be also configured to
run on a Web server. Since the wiki can be cloned
and merged along with the repository, it's perfect
for working on project documentation in small teams.
