After downgrading Google yesterday and "to reflect a deeper than expected impact of the global economic slowdown," Jefferies analyst lowered their online advertising revenue estimates for 2008 and 2009 -- "Again!" they managed to cheerfully note:

We now expect global online advertising in FY08 to grow at roughly 17% to $48.4B down from 20%, and in FY09 at 8% to $52.3B down from 13%.

Our revised estimates imply 23%Y/Y and 9%Y/Y growth in search revenues in FY08 and FY09.

They also imply growth in FY08 and FY09 of 10% and 6%, respectively for display and other non search ad revenues.

We believe YouTube will overtime become a major driver of display ads.

We think the Jefferies analyst are still too optimistic. Display advertising will shrink next year. In fact, Gawker Media owner Nick Denton says it could collapse by 40% before the downturn is over.

I’m at Web 2.0 Summit, where John Battelle and Mark Zuckerberg will be having a 20- to 25-minute conversation. I’ll be live blogging the conversation so feel free to refresh. They should be taking the stage in the next five minutes, so check back for live updates.

1:48 pm - John Battelle and Mark Zuckerberg should be taking the stage momentarily

John Battelle (JB) asks: How’s the financing going
Mark Zuckerberg (MZ): We had really good terms on the round with Mark Zuckerberg.

JB: Trips to Dubai.
MZ: Oh

JB: Do you need money?
MZ: No.

JB: One of the things you told me related to money is that you are not focused on optimizing for revenue. There have been articles suggesting that you’ll have to focus on it now

MZ: There’s a team at Facebook who worked on building the translations application and now we have more than 20 languages available. We want to make sure people can share and connect with the people around them. In the past I’ve said we aren’t focused on revenue and people have interpreted that as to mean that we aren’t focused on revenue but currently we have two solid revenue streams.

We’re also opening new offices. We have one in France, we’ve opened one in dublin.

JB: How does it breakdown? Brand versus online.

MZ: Both are growing in different ways.

JB: When you did the deal with Microsoft it was a big part of your revenue mix.

MZ: When we did it early on it was a much larger portion of the revenue but that’s no longer the case.

JB: Do you think Steve Ballmer is happy with the price he paid?

MZ: I think it was more about the partnership and lest about the investment. We’ve found that they’ve been a really good partner. They’ve been a very good partner in that we are both trying to “build new things” … not much details there.

JB: But do you think Steve’s happy with the price he paid?

MZ: People really obsess over the price.

JB: It was $15 Billion …

MZ: We felt like we got favorable terms and it made sense for us to do. If we can succeed at making it so that a large portion of people around the world are involved in the development and usage of Facebook then it’s really good. We aren’t focused on justifying a $15 billion valuation.

JB: Can you remind people how many people work at Facebook?

MZ: It’s over 700 right now.

JB: Do you have a hiring freeze?

MZ: No … we’re hiring really great people. We’re really aggressively expanding the sales effort. Take France for example, I was just visiting. 7 percent of their population is on Facebook. When I go back in a year it could be 25 or 30 percent of the population and that’s why we put an office there.

JB: Let’s talk about Connect.

MZ: We just announced that anyone can apply. We’re now working toward the full opened release.

JB: There is a criticism that Facebook is a walled garden and that you don’t want to be part of OpenSocial and a broader, distributed web.

MZ: There’s this very clear transition from closed systems to open systems. Overtime I think it’s worth exploring how the companies can work together. Right now the particpating companies are much smaller than Facebook individually. Mark mentions Facebook potentially becoming the open standard.

The reason that Microsoft became such a big company is because they didn’t attempt to build the entire computer, instead they built an open platform for people to build on. We got through this hurdle of people not wanting to put up their information and the way we got through that was privacy settings.

JB: Mentions the multiple people that have been fired due to Facebook just from today alone.

MZ: Well the privacy settings are there. We’re trying to make more tools for people to share information and now with Facebook Connect they can do that from their own websites. If were not on the edge of that we’re not doing a good job.

JB: When you announced this last year everybody ran into their meeting rooms to ask what are web going to build. A year later, there’s a feeling that the platform hasn’t lived up to its potential. There has been some criticism from people here.

MZ: Earlier this year we changed the way the platform works. What we basically did was we skewed the incentives for developers. The amount of attention that an application gets is directly proportional to the amount that they let share information.

JB: Give us an example of applications that are going well.

MZ: With the election Causes has been doing pretty well. When we changed the platform we knew that applications that just put boxes in peoples’ profiles would be hurt. Anything built around user interfaces can now be built on their own website. It’s inherently making a site social to plug into Facebook Connect. We took a slightly slower ramp up period and we learned from the last time that we’d like to be more careful about it.

JB: How do you and your partners make money with Facebook Connect?

MZ: For the first version there is nothing that is revenue generation. The whole model is ad driven. If people are using their Facebook data around the web there is a direct correlation with how their using the site.

JB: Let’s talk about the online ad piece. Is Twitter just a feature of Facebook?

MZ: I think they’re doing really great stuff. Is it a feature? I think they’re a great tool.

JB: Is Twitter a partner for Facebook Connect?

MZ: Yeah.

JB: Is the model an endorsement model or is there another model?

MZ: The brands we are mainly working with now, the ads have been performing fairly well. We have a second iteration of engagement ads. We launched Social Ads last year and we released a new form of engagement ads on the homepage this year. People don’t just want to see news, they want to see what’s going on with their friends. When we see other people and their friends engaging with an ad, it makes it more likely that other people engage with that ad. Mark Zuckerberg is now going over the types of ads that are being run currently.

JB: I want to ask you about something that has come up in the past few days. One of those is that Facebook has been banned in the workplace. There are a lot of things that make FAcebook not useful for inside companies. What do you think of that market?

MZ: Anecdotally we’ve seen a trend in the opposite direction. Financial companies initially blocked them for security purposes, but companies are making it now so people can communicate at work but not directly with their own co-workers. The same type of incentive systems that the site is built off, sharing information and getting feedback, has been working for some companies that use the Facebook platform.

JB: We talked about Connect, exporting a feed, etc. On Google I’d love to check out my Facebook feed so I can make Adsense for Facebook. Is this why you aren’t doing OpenSocial?

MZ: I think people are making this out to be a lot more than it is.

JB: That’s my job, we’re on stage.

MZ: There’s a lot going on between each of these companies and we see a clear trend of people sharing more information online and eventually you can have public streams and things like that. We’ve moved in that direction and on the platform side it’s really early.

Audience Question (US.com Writer): Do you have a plan for retention of members?

MZ: This has always been an interesting stat about Facebook. We always have this pretty amazing stat that 50 percent of users are active every day. What we do is help people share things online. If we continue building things that help people share information with the people they want in the places they want to, we’ll see people continue to share more information online, doubling year after year. I think the best strategy is to contin

Audience Question: We created a huge presence on Facebook with a page around a political issue. It grew to be 140,00 members (Proposition 8). Do you see pages end of life?

MZ: I think people use this successfully. Whether it’s to overthrow regimes or have a policy.

Our company is building a new project recently. This project is about simulated flight. The total solution will include the software module and hardware module. Unfortunately, our company just a software company, we don’t have the ability to design the hardware. So, our company wants to buy the hardware solution from other company, we only need to work out the software.

The software part looks like just a piece of cake to us. So, we quickly build a team to handle this task.

After many and many overtime, the team has finished the software module. And all the operation with hardware is reserved as an interface.

At the same time, our boss has met some hardware suppliers and decided to make a deal with one of them.

Sooner after the deal, we receive the hardware driver library. Things not always go that easy. This time, we found out that the hardware driver library is not fit for the interfaces reserved by our software.

This is a big problem. If we can’t fix it, we’ll only have two ways to go, one is rewriting our code to fit for the hardware driver library; the other is buying a new hardware solution. Eh, maybe we have the third choice, that’s we quit our jobs.

We were very depressed by this situation. But life still goes on. We check the driver library carefully, and we found that many functions can provide the function we need, but it has a different name. We can’t change the driver library. Does it mean that we need to change our code?

Obviously, we don’t want to do that, it’s not an easy job, further more, we’re all lazy guys. So, we need a tricky solution.

Genius programmers, what will you do if you’re in this situation?

Finally, a genius guy in our team gives a suggestion. This solution is much like building a bridge from the interfaces reserved in the software module and the functions provided by the driver library.

The solution is that, we build a new class to wrap driver library, and the new class will derived from the interfaces reserved by the software.

The original code is showing below.

public class Rocket{

As you see, the Rocket class is in our software module, and the RocketDriver class is in the library they provided. And the solution is as follows.

Now, the software module doesn’t need to be changed. And everything goes well.

The UML diagram is as below.

Do you like this solution? Of course, this is a pattern named adapter pattern. The intent of this pattern is as follows.

Convert the interface of a class into another interface clients expect. Adapter lets classes work together that couldn’t otherwise because of incompatible interfaces.

–By GOF BOOK

Hope you have a sensitive feeling about this pattern now.

Enjoy!

In today’s world there are so many more options than just working in a cubicle or behind a cash register. Maybe you are a teenager and you’re having a hard time finding your first job, or perhaps you’ve been recently laid off, disabled, or you’re a stay-at-home Mom and do not have the opportunity to work outside your home.

Whatever the case, if you want to set your own hours, work at home, and possibly have some fun then read on!

As with any of these at-home positions you will find key benefits and drawbacks.

Let’s take a look at some of them.

Key benefits include:

Flexible hours

Convenience of working at home

Convenience of setting your own hours

Free training (depending on the job)

The more you work the more you earn

Can you think of some other benefits?

Drawbacks may include:

No benefits such as health insurance or overtime

You must keep your own records and submit invoices for payment

Pay your own employment taxes

Repetitive nature of the job

Being alone for a long period of time with no one to talk to

Having to motivate yourself to work

What other drawbacks do you see or have experienced?

If you find that working at home is for you, here is a list of opportunities you may want to consider:

1. Virtual Call Center Representative

The need for At-Home Call Center Reps is growing. This is a job opportunity with long-term growth potential. This type of at-home work involves answering in-coming calls for companies and can range from taking customer product orders to answering questions, or scheduling appointments. Many companies will allow you to work at-home as little as fifteen minutes a day to full-time hours each week. Some companies may want you to do the calling. It all depends on the needs of the company you work for. Always ask questions about the work involved and never pay any upfront fees to get started. Legitimate call center companies will pay and train you.

Some requirements for this type of work may include:

Minimum of 18 years of age to apply

Legally permitted to work in the United States

Criminal and credit background check required

You must like talking on the phone

Must have good typing skills

Having a room that is free from outside noise and distractions

Have excellent verbal skills

Basic computer knowledge

Have attention to detail

The ability to set aside certain blocks of time for work

Optional but often necessary:

Sales skills

Data entry knowledge

Some Equipment that is needed:

A computer with high-speed Internet access

A dedicated land line telephone line

Telephone (not a cell phone)

I tested LiveOps which is a Virtual Call Center. The registration process was quite easy. You have to fill out your basic contact and background information, take a reading comprehension test and record a voice audition. You do all of this online. If you are interested in trying out LiveOps start here

Some other Virtual Call Centers you might want to check out:

West at Home (to apply)

Working Solutions (to apply)

ACD Direct (to apply)

2. Freelance Article and Ghost Writing

Online business owners need to drive more customers to their website to ensure a steady stream of potential buyers. Many business owners do this through blogs. Keeping content written for a blog is very time-consuming so many blog owners turn to freelance article or ghost writers.

This is where you come in! You can offer to write articles (from 400-1,000 words depending on the need) for small websites or blog owners. Usually you can get paid $10 to $20 per article, sometimes even more.

If you decide to become a ghost writer you will not get the credit for writing the article. You get paid to write articles for other people and they will put their name on the article.

Here are some categories you could write for:

Health and Beauty

Technology and Computers

Internet and Blogging

Music and Video

SAHM (Stay-at-Home Mom) and WAHM (Work-at-Home Mom)

Business and Financial

Real Estate

Health and Wellness

Women’s and Men’s Issues

Basically, you need to have experience and expertise in your chosen category. But that doesn’t mean you need to be an expert. What are you good at? What hobbies do you have that you could write about? Do you have a good writing style? Are you able to teach someone else what you know?

How do you find places to submit your work or bid on projects? Craigslist is a very popular site to find writing jobs. It is free to post a job and free to find one too. You can search in your local area or nationwide. Here are some other popular sites you may want to check out as well.

Associated Content

Helium.com

Constant Content

Guru.com

Journalism Jobs

Funds For Writers

3. Freelance Contract Work

Many people enjoy running their own business from home. I was a computer consultant for years working out of my house. I taught classes at the local college but studied and wrote my lesson plans from home. I was and still do occasional web design work and all of that was done from home. There are a lot of freelance at-home opportunities if you look for them and you don’t want to be limited by the jobs you can do in your local area. The internet provides so many more opportunities.

One website you may want to consider is Guru.com. At Guru.com companies post freelance jobs and as a freelancer you can bid on them. Once you register and fill out your profile, submit a quote and once picked, work on projects. You get paid once the work is done. If you are just starting you may have to bid low to get a project but over time you will be able to raise your prices. As of this writing they had over 5,200 projects to bid on.

Basic membership is free but the Basic account cannot upload Package Deals or a Video Profile. Their Services page will give you the breakdown of fees for their paid package deals. Once you login you fill out your profile and can also upload photos, your resume, samples of your work and videos. Guru.com charges all professionals either a 5% (Guru and Guru Vendor accounts) or 10% (Basic member) Project Fee.

Although this could also fit into the Freelance article writing category it encompasses so much more. They have all kinds of freelance talent categories including:

Website Design / Website Marketing

Graphic Design / Presentations / Multimedia

Fashion / Interior / Landscape / Set Design

Business Consulting

Photography / Videography

Admin Support (Legal, Medical, & Accounting)

These are just some of the categories and I encourage you to visit their website and find the category that fits your talent and job skills best.

4. Sell Handmade Items on Etsy.com

Etsy is an online marketplace similar to eBay but it is strictly for the buying and selling of handmade goods. If you have a talent for making anything from pillows to clothing, jewelry to baked goods, dog collars and everything in between then you can sell them on Etsy.

From their website: “Our mission is to enable people to make a living making things, and to reconnect makers with buyers. Our vision is to build a new economy and present a better choice: Buy, Sell, and Live Handmade.”

Instead of buying something that is mass produced you can buy something on Etsy that doesn’t exist anywhere in the world. They have over a million visitors looking to buy and they are growing fast and it is free to join. There is a 30¢ fee to list items and a 3.5% fee on sold items.

If you don’t already have one, you should set up a PayPal account because it is easiest way to accept payments on Etsy. It is free to set up a PayPal account. Of course, PayPal takes a very small cut of the money you earn but without a service like PayPal you would have no way of taking online payments so the fee is worth it.

Once your items sell you have to ship them to your customers. If you use the post office you can get free USPS Priority boxes sent to your house. Just sign up online and the postal worker in your area will deliver them in about a week. You can sign up by going to USPS and clicking on Supplies.

When you sell online you should get a separate email address just for selling. It helps you keep your sales emails separate from your personal emails. There are many places to get a free email address.

5. Get Paid to Take Surveys

While this is not really a job or career and you won’t get rich by filling out surveys, it is still an easy way to make some quick cash. Companies will pay you to fill out brief surveys or try their products. Usually you will make between $5 and $10 per survey and will often receive free product samples to test out. The key with paid surveys is to sign up with as many paid survey companies as you can. The more surveys you take the more money you are going to make.

These companies want to find out what you like and don’t like. They use the collective information and statistics from the surveys to help them decide who to market their products or services to. Large companies can spend millions on product research before putting them on the open market. They are willing to pay for your opinions and ideas to help them to figure out how to market their product.

It doesn’t cost anything to sign up to fill out surveys. Make sure you are using reputable companies though. If you are in doubt ask friends who take surveys for referrals or look for messages boards online where people are talking about taking surveys.

You should also set up a separate email account just for taking surveys to help you keep your personal email from getting mixed up with the survey email.

Here are some legitimate survey companies to get your started:

Greenfield

Pinecone Research

Zoom Panel

Of course, I think the best benefit of working at home is sitting at my computer typing away with my fuzzy slippers on while I watch the Ellen Degeneres show. And, yes, I do get up and dance!

Do you have any other suggestions for home-based employment? How do you make money from home (legal methods only please!!)

Low-cost and no-cost survival tactics require a “business-as-usual mindset.”

According to Rieva Lesonsky, former editor of Entrepreneur and blogger for Microsoft Office Live Small Business (http://smallbusiness.officelive.com), entrepreneurs can use this time to cut back in certain areas and strategically invest in other areas, such as marketing. “It may seem counterintuitive, but increased marketing and sales activity can be an effective way to bolster your business and weather economic storms,” Lesonsky said. “In fact, marketing is a key component to your small business’ survival.”

So what should current and aspiring entrepreneurs do during these tough times? Lesonsky offers the following advice:

• Keep overhead low. Entrepreneurs should take a hard look at their expenses and scale back on nonessentials. Some big cost-cutting areas include business travel, labor and rent. For example: Entrepreneurs can try videoconferencing instead of traveling to a meeting; consider forgoing pricey office space and work from home instead; and re-examine their staffing plan to ensure they have the right amount of coverage for their current level of business, keeping overtime costs to a minimum.

• Make noise. In this economy, competitors are likely cutting back on marketing spending too. This provides an opportunity for entrepreneurs to get their marketing message out in a potentially less cluttered environment, and possibly at a better rate too. In addition to traditional forms of advertising, entrepreneurs can take advantage of low-cost digital marketing tactics, such as creating a blog, building an audience with Twitter, staying on top of their ratings through online review sites such as Yelp, and creating company pages on social networking sites such as Facebook and LinkedIn.

• Have a strong online presence. Increasingly, consumers are using the Web to find businesses of all sizes, so it’s really crucial that small businesses be visible online in order to compete. Today, there are a number of low- or no-cost options to help entrepreneurs establish a professional Web presence without the expense of hiring a designer or Web master. Microsoft Office Live Small Business (http://smallbusiness.officelive.com) provides entrepreneurs with a free Web site and hosting, a custom domain name and business e-mail free for the first year, low-cost e-commerce and online marketing tools, and free business management tools.

• “Hire” customers. Entrepreneurs can turn satisfied customers into a word-of-mouth referral engine for their business. They can consider offering referral fees or free services to encourage customers to refer new clients. Entrepreneurs can also ask customers to provide testimonials that can be showcased on the company Web site and marketing materials.

• Always negotiate. Entrepreneurs should keep in mind that everything is negotiable. When other businesses are cutting back, entrepreneurs are in a better position to negotiate for lower rates, better ad placements, lower telephone rate plans or other discounts such as on office supplies.

These and other small-business tips from Lesonsky can be found on the Office Live Small Business blog at http://www.myofficelivecommunity.com.

Loads Of Crap!" />With huge success that The Pirate Bay has mustered overtime with its BitTorrent tracker; reaching to over 3 million users and around 15 million peers, news has it that the Pirates are planning to move towards streaming. The idea had been brewing up for quite some time but had been postponed for one reason or another and has as always remained more of a rumor.

The rumor circulated like a wildfire as reports of The Pirate City being the upcoming site to offer streaming but fact finding resulted in a big turn off as clues revealed the site to be nothing more than totally random initiative. The rumor was broken when search resulted in the site having its server hosted in the UK and registered via an unknown domain in Russia.

Streaming will definitely make things easier for The Pirate Bay fans as they can watch movies and TV shows apart from that it will give The Pirate Bay an added domain to lead and have more enemies amongst studios. The news has been put down by Peter Sunde and he has confirmed that The Pirate City bears no association with The Pirate Bay. And why not? Given their reputation of being up front with each and everyone of their products and ventures, The Pirate Bay would be more than just loud if it has any plans to offer such a service.

It rarely happens when you hear that Google acquires something and it ends up biting dust; but the case has been quite different with Jaiku. Ever since its acquisition by Google the service has been put aside and neglected for overtime the service has primarily become useless.

MG Siegler reports of Jaiku getting a CPR to breathe life into it. The site presently reads a pretty hopeful message that the service might very well come back to life:

Folks, we’re offline for the weekend for server maintenance. Now’s a good time to talk to someone you love.

The downtime might very well come as a signal that Google might be moving Jaiku to its App Engine that is capable off running various applications simultaneously. If this is so, we might very well see the long dead service become reliable once again for the countless users.

Siegler hints at Jaiku enabling its users to use Google accounts in order to access the service and might very well pen registration for new users; which by now must be under rubbles owing to the negligence since its acquisition by Google.

With services like FriendFeed and Twitter set firmly as rulers in the arena; users must have thought of Jaiku making it bi once it had Google attached to it but the miserable failure (let’s forget for what reasons) has led users away from the service and it will have to offer quite a lot to win the favor of its ‘pre-historic’ users.

I would still keep my cards to myself and not get excited at throwing Jaiku’s chances to stand up to the bin and it’s purely because it has Google backing it up with investment etc. A bit of alterations in the layout and services Jaiku provides might very well help it to reclaim what it has lost over time; to be sort speed up its recovery.

David Walsh, a former Network Engineer claims he was required to work after hours and weekends without overtime compensation and that Apple “intentionally and deliberately created numerous job levels and a multitude of job titles to create the superficial appearance of hundreds of unique jobs, when in fact, these jobs are substantially similar and can be easily grouped together for the purpose of determining whether they are exempt from overtime wages.”

During his on-call hours, Walsh “was required to remain on stand-by for the entire night, every night of the week, for the entire week without compensation,” contends the suit, which was filed in U.S. District Court for Southern California.

Walsh’s attorneys are asking the court to grant class status to all of Apple’s California IT workers, including those who are dispatched to perform support functions at Apple retail stores.

Apple has yet to make a formal response to the suit.
