It's certainly possible that ads delivered as SWF could be piggy. Some browsers slow down CPU access by background tabs, in part because of such concerns. Adobe hasn't installed framerate chokes for the content you make, and advertising publishers have general guidelines for not being piggy. But considering that many popular webpages never stop loading due to the multitude of third-party content requests, it's definitely possible that some of the advertising on those pages could be increasing your CPU's general load to measurable degree.

I don't know how to entice people to follow Postel's Law, whether in SWF or in text... if you've got reactions, thoughts, I'd appreciate hearing them, thanks.

A video blog entry by Black Eyed Peas frontman Will.i.am shows just how much fun you can have in a recording studio with an iPhone at hand.

At about 1:40 seconds, the club-ready tune on youtube (or under “video blog” on his site) is catchy enough to have some fans wondering whether it’ll be part of his next album. It might not win over new converts to his Blackberry social network or much love at Nokia where he was a featured guest for the Remix party…

The party was really a unique networking event for people in media -- low pressure, organic social scenario. But in the last year, the entire environment of media has changed -- bloated mastheads are being trimmed down, expenses are being cut everywhere. This time last year people would have several offers to move to various places. Now people are just happy to keep the jobs they have. So not only are many media people now unemployed, the job availability in the business has changed. And it seems kind of rude to be getting trashed when people are without jobs -- no one wants the party to take on a desperate kind of vibe."

We're not sure this is true. Even last month's Media Meshing was as busy and high-spirited as necessary. There's never a bad time for booze-fueled networking -- especially in bad times.

So we're hoping Blakeley's just lazy. (He does promise us more ambitious plans next year.)

In the meantime, we'll wring together some sort of informal Meshing-like event starting in January. Consider yourself invited; details to follow.

It's possible, of course, that Amazon's chart is broken. Or that third-party "used and new" Kindle transactions are occurring so rapidly that they're pushing it to the top. Some 34 used Kindles start at $450 and go up to $1,500. Maybe people are buying today to avoid paying twice as much in two weeks. (We're asking Amazon for clarification on how they calculate their lists. It's also listed as their "most wished for" and "most gifted" electronic gadget.)

But since you can't really reliably give a new Kindle as a gift this Christmas, we assume that sales are at least somewhat depressed. Which means it probably can't be great news for Amazon that its sold-out Kindle is leading gadget sales -- ahead of in-stock, discounted Garmin GPS devices, Apple (AAPL) iPods, a Sony (SNE) Blu-ray player, and Canon digital cameras.

Two popular online productivity applications, I Want Sandy and Stikkit, have announced that they will be shutting down soon. Both services are run by the same company and recently got acquired by Twitter. It was hinted that some of the technology would be integrated into Twitter later on.

Google Admits to Breaking App Store Terms
After a little searching around a group of individuals managed to find out that Google had used undocumented API’s in their iPhone application, which is against Apple’s SDK rules. There’s been no word from Apple yet regarding whether Google will have to change how their program works.

eBay’s Traffic Plummeting
According to some data eBay’s traffic in the U.S. has been sharply dropping. In October 2007 they were receiving 13.5 million unique visitors, but in October 2008 they received just 9.1 million unique visitors. And it continues to drop from one month to another. Will eBay be able to come back?

Apple Finally Got Safari Right on the iPhone
Looks like I’m not the only one noticing a dramatically improved Safari browser on the iPhone 2.2 firmware. I used to see Safari crashes several times each day, but haven’t had a single hiccup since the iPhone 2.2 firmware update. Yay!

Google Maps Updated
Google has updated their maps service with a refreshed interface, and spruced up the Street View a bit. Now when using Street View the imagery will take up the entire map area on the screen instead of being contained in a bubble. This is a dramatic improvement for anyone that uses the Street View regularly.

G1 Gets Visual Voicemail and Opera Mini
The T-Mobile G1 powered by Google’s Android operating system now has two long awaited apps: visual voicemail and Opera Mini. The only downside is that the visual voicemail service is run by a third-party, but it is still free.

Watch Out for the New Digsby Installer
I’ve been a huge fan of the Digsby instant messenger client ever since it became available, and have managed to get dozens of friends, family, and co-workers using their software. Now, however, they are doing something I’m not all that fond of… asking users to install toolbars and other things during installation. I’ll continue to recommend their software, but I’ll be sure to warn people about the things it will try to install.
