Despite the current financial crisis, the spending on Black Friday increased 1% as compared to last year. Americans spent $534 million on e-commerce shopping this Black Friday, announced in a report by comScore.

According to Gian Fulgoni, comScore chairman:

Early reports suggest that Black Friday sales in retail stores were slightly better than anticipated in this depressed retail climate, and that performance apparently extended to the online channel, which saw sales on Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday combined increase 2 percent versus year ago.

It’s probable that on Black Friday consumers responded positively to the very aggressive promotions and discounts being offered in retail stores, so it will be important to see how they respond to similarly attractive deals being offered online on Cyber Monday, the traditional kick-off to the online holiday shopping season.

Is it unsportsmanlike to gloat? Microsoft (MSFT) is crowing their Xbox 360 walloped Sony's (SNE) PS3 in sales on Black Friday
Retailers reported Xbox 360 console sales over the Black Friday weekend...

Is it unsportsmanlike to gloat? Microsoft (MSFT) is crowing their Xbox 360 walloped Sony's (SNE) PS3 in sales on Black Friday:

Retailers reported Xbox 360 console sales over the Black Friday weekend were on pace to beat previous years, outselling the PlayStation 3 by a three-to-one ratio and estimating a 25 percent increase from Xbox 360 Black Friday sales figures from 2007.

Not bad. But given Microsoft is making no mention of Nintendo's (NTDOY) Wii, we're guessing the Wii continued its dominance of the game console market.

In October, Nintendo sold more Wiis than sales of the Xbox 360 and PS3 combined, and eBay (EBAY) recently said the Wii was the site's most popular product on Black Friday.

Speaking at the outlet's Reuters Media Summit, DeWolfe said that MySpace's "revenue and profits are significant and they continue to grow in spite of the poor economy." Fox Interactive Media, the News Corp. division that encompasses MySpace, Photobucket, and other digital properties, was declared the top destination for display ads on the Web several months ago.

But display ads will be hit hard as ad budgets are cut, many critics have said--harder than other forms of digital advertising like search ads. Market research firm eMarketer slashed its 2009 projections by over $1 billion this week.

DeWolfe also said, according to Reuters, that MySpace's revenue in the last quarter was up 18 percent from the previous year's. He's expecting that they'll continue to grow--just not as much.

Google has published its plan to build into Chrome what is arguably its most requested feature: the ability to accept extensions that can customize how the open-source Web browser operates.

And guess what? Google's dependence on advertising notwithstanding, one of the extension examples the company points to is the ability to block advertisements.

The Chrome extensions document, spotlighted Saturday by Google programmer Aaron Boodman, doesn't include a timeline, but it does shed light on why the project is a priority for Chromium, the open-source project behind Chrome.

"Chromium can't be everything to all people," according to the document. "User-created extensions have been proposed to solve these problems: the addition of features that have specific or limited appeal; users coming from other browsers who are used to certain extensions that they can't live without; bundling partners who would like to add features to Chromium specific to their bundle."

When Google launched Chrome three months ago, it promised a Chrome extensions framework. Extensions are a popular feature of Chrome's most likely rival, Mozilla's Firefox, and one very popular extension is AdBlock Plus.

And AdBlock makes a specific appearance on the list of extension uses that Google said it would like to support eventually:

• Bookmarking/navigation tools: Delicious Toolbar, StumbleUpon, Web-based history, new tab page clipboard accelerators.

• Content enhancements: Skype extension (clickable phone numbers), RealPlayer extension (save video), Autolink (generic microformat data--addresses, phone numbers, etc.)

• Content filtering: AdBlock, Flashblock, privacy control, parental control

• Download helpers: video helpers, download accelerators, DownThemAll, FlashGot

• Features: ForecastFox, FoxyTunes, Web Of Trust, GooglePreview, BugMeNot

Demand for extensions is real.

In an unscientific CNET News poll about why people don't use Chrome, about 19 percent pointed to the lack of an extensions feature. And on Google's issue tracking site for Chromium, a Chrome extensions feature is the top-requested item.

"Of all the Firefox plug-ins, this is the one essential one," said Firefox user Ole Eichhorn. "Chrome is faster until you factor in all the cruft that gets downloaded as ads, then it isn't faster anymore. When Chrome supports AdBlock, it will be the winner, but until it does, Firefox is the only choice."

In its document, Google described some of its goals for Chrome extensions. The extensions should silently update, just like Chrome does. They should be isolated for security reasons and only get access to resources it's entitled to use. Installation should be easy, taking only two clicks.

They should permit rich user interface options--rich enough to implement some parts of Chrome as extensions, Google said. Among the interface options should be "toolbars, sidebars, content scripts (for Greasemonkey-like functionality), and content filtering (for parental filters, malware filters, or AdBlock-like functionality)," Google said. Some interfaces will require the user to grant specific permissions, such as "access to the history database" or "access to mail.google.com," Google said.

Google will play a major role in extensions, providing a central service that can be used to issue updates and to blacklist "malicious or harmful extensions" so the browser won't use them.

"It's likely in the future we may want to provide a consumer front-end which would allow users to more easily find the most popular, highest quality and trustworthy extensions," Google also said.

via cnet.com

Over the past few months both big and small developers have been substantially impacted by the Facebook redesign. Many suffered huge plunges in traffic, few of which were able to make adjustments that resulted in a return to normal. Slide for instance had their top application, FunSpace, drop from close to 20 million monthly active users down to a low of 13 million monthly active users in the past months. That’s a whopping 35 percent decrease in traffic.

Fortunately the company was able to adapt to the changes but they were only able to recoup approximately 2 million of the 7 million lost users. The company has since flat-lined. RockYou had a somewhat similar experience. The company’s largest application, Super Wall, dropped over 14 percent in the past two months but in contrast to Slide, RockYou has been able to recoup the majority of their lost users.

Not all companies have suffered a decrease in the amount of traffic coming to their applications. Causes, which I previously featured, has seen their traffic soar 1000 percent in the past three months. One of the main reasons that is that the application is one of two members of the great applications program that Facebook announced at f8 earlier this year.

Their traffic has appeared to slow over the past few day though and while Causes is by far the largest individual application (2.5 million more monthly active users than second runner SuperWall), it is the company’s only application. RockYou and Slide still dominate the developer leaderboard going back and forth with each other for the top spot.

It it surprising to see the two companies which were the first widget developers on social networks retain the lead positions? I don’t think so. The companies clearly have the most resources allocated to developing on social networks with large funded social gaming following close behind. For now it looks like RockYou is on target to eclipse Slide in relative size on Facebook but it’s clear that the two companies remain neck and neck as the fierce competition continues.

Chris Snyder is an online journalist specializing in new media. He writes about the tech biz for Wired.com’s Epicenter blog.

It’s a long road to a victory in the browser wars. Just ask Firefox. The open source browser which launched in 2004 just cracked the 20 percent threshold of the market share for November, according to Net Applications, pushing it a step closer but still miles away from IE.

Recently a few new players have also thrown their hats in the ring, including Google with its much-hyped Chrome and the lesser known, Mozilla-based social web browser Flock, which released its 2.0 version this past October. But do these newcomers even stand a chance?

The Basics

Firefox is gaining ground for good reason: it’s simple, reliable and secure. Its tabbed browsing led to a similar remodel in IE and it has a slew of add-ons that give it a leg up over the competition. It’s slowly becoming the new standard with a steady audience, and that will be hard to beat anytime soon. And its open source platform leaves room for alternatives and experimental niche browsers like Flock.

Flock 2.0 is basically a Firefox with a lot of perks and pre-installed add-ons for those heavy into social networking. Think of it as a FriendFeed of the browser world, which brings all of your friends from 23 various networks together in a sidebar. It is also one of the first browsers to incorporate media feeds for photos and videos. Flock is all about sharing what you find on the web as you surf, and it allows you to accomplish this pretty easily by dragging and dropping them either into an email or onto a friend.

Chrome is the polar opposite of Flock, and its big advantage is that it’s even simpler than Firefox, or any other browser out there right now. The search bar is also integrated into the address bar, which seems to be the wave of the future, at least for those who swear by Google search and don’t need any bells and whistles. Unfortunately, Chrome’s only available for PCs at the moment.

Usability

Chrome wins hands down on getting the job done. It’s quick and painless with a clear focus of searching for information using Google’s engine. Dynamic tabbed browsing is a staple now, and if anything crashes, only that tab will go down, not your entire session, which is nice. But if you want a richer web browsing experience stick with Firefox or Flock. There’s also no easy way to subscribe to RSS feeds from the search bar as there is with Firefox.

Flock can feel a bit overwhelming at times with all of the sidebars of information, but once you get everything set up and get the hang of it, it’s pretty convenient and preferable to keeping a million tabs open for sites like Twitter and Facebook. The drag and drop interface is great. When you just want to email a YouTube video or picture it’s much easier than copying any URLs, although it does also seem a bit too easy to share something that you might not want shared.

The only other problem with the social networks is that you can’t really fit all of that functionality into a sidebar. It’s a good way of consolidating friends, but it’s more like a giant address book than anything else. Simple things like posting tweets are a bit confusing, with no clear box for entering in text. When a friend adds content, however, it will open up the profile in the main browser in full view, so you still need to go back to the source.

Speed

Despite the extra features, Flock is surprisingly just as fast as Chrome or Firefox, at least on a medium grade PC. Looks like they’ve improved upon this concern in the latest release. And Chrome seems to have Firefox beat in this category but the difference isn’t anything drastic.

Privacy

Incognito — aka “porn mode” – is the new way to surf, as every browser is picking up on this private surfing option that Safari first initiated.

Chrome has faced some privacy concerns at launch with its Omnibox monitoring and recording too much information, but this can all be prevented by changing the default settings and going Incognito.

Expandability

Chrome doesn’t support any extensions or add-ons yet, so Firefox still dominates in this area. But if you are looking for simple, you probably don’t want much more than Chrome already offers.

Final Thoughts

Firefox is here to stay, but there will always be a long tail of niche alternatives like Chrome and Flock. When Chrome moves into Mac realm it could pick up some market share from Safari. Flock will be there for social network junkies who want to try something new, but the first step to making Flock mainstream will be for more of the social networks themselves to go mainstream. Twitter is on track, but still has a long way to go before it’s a household name. If you’re only on Facebook or MySpace, you probably don’t need to worry about the extra sidebars and features.

And guess...

Apple wrestled more computer users from the grasp of Microsoft, according to a November survey of Web users released Monday. Macs comprise nearly 9 percent of computers online, Net Applications announced.

The November marketshare of 8.82 percent is an increase over Cupertino’s 8.21 percent share NA reported in October.

Conversely, Microsoft’s share of Internet usage fell in November. Windows fell to 89.69 percent of online users, slipping below the nine-out-of-10 marketshare Redmond has enjoyed for years.

Along with the Mac, iPhone devices eroded the Windows lead. The iPhone jumped 12 percent in November to 0.37 percent of the 40,000 Websites monitored by Net Applications. In October, the iPhone comprised 0.33 percent of operating systems accessing the Internet.

Microsoft Internet Explorer fell below 70 percent of the market for Web browsers, IE dropping 2 percent to 69.77 percent in November. Safari hit 7 percent of the market in November, climbing 8 percent over October’s 6.57 percent rating.

In another milestone, Firefox topped 20 percent of browsers, rising four percent from 19.97 percent posted in October.

Looking for Free advertising on Facebook? You might have a chance for it now but unfortunately it isn’t within your control. This morning Sam Goldfarb of Tradimax sent me a screenshot of the image on the left. It was an advertisement for the AllFacebook fan page and while I was glad to see the advertisement, I hadn’t paid for it. This isn’t the first time that unpaid advertisements have been displayed.

A couple weeks ago I wrote about new Facebook personals advertisements but the company denied that it was little more than “a test running to a limited number of users that previews the profiles of a user’s friends”. While it may not have been personal advertisements it technically was a free advertisement for users. Now it appears that there are also free advertisements for Fan Pages.

Why would Facebook be displaying these types of advertisements? Ultimately I can’t be 100 percent sure but my guess is that Facebook wants to encourage others to run similar ads. By displaying successful implementations of Facebook ads it will encourage others to do the same. I have witnessed this phenomenon first hand. After testing out Facebook’s advertising platform I saw that other companies were quick to follow suit with similar advertisements.

The theory is that if the ad is working for someone else it should for me as well. Perhaps Facebook is simply just testing out click-thru rates on their own advertisements and this is little more than a test. While all I can do is speculate, it’s definitely interesting to see these ads popping up around the site. The advertisements also appear to be random and rare occurrences. Let us know if you see similar ones! What other reasons does Facebook have for displaying these ads?

"Tomb Raider," a game featuring the adventures of Indiana Jones-meets-Barbie figure Lara Croft, was once just about the hottest franchise in gaming. But Lara's appeal waned, and with it went the fortunes of game publisher SCi Entertainment (SEG.L), which has seen its value collapse 92 percent in a year, from about 600 million pounds (about $920 million American at today's rate) to 50 million pounds now.

So this unsourced report in the Daily Mail makes sense to us -- SCi is in the middle of takeover talks, with Electrionic Arts (ERTS), French gaming company Ubisoft, and Time Warner (TWX) -- which already has a 16% stake in the company -- all named as possible players in a deal. But it's still worth taking such reports with a grain of salt -- SCi has been long been the subject of takeover rumors, none of which have come to fruition.

A source familiar with matter said discussions are at an 'early- stage' and that SCi received approaches from two separate firms within the past few weeks.

The first is understood to have come from America's Electronic Arts, the world's second biggest computer games company.

It has always featured strongly in bid chatter that has surrounded SCi.

But it faces competition for SCi from France's Ubisoft, which the source says has also made an approach.

EA owns a 25 per cent stake in Ubisoft but they act independently.

Renewed interest in SCi has been sparked by the dramatic fall in value of the company.

From a peak of 1billion at the height of the dotcom boom it is worth just 50million today.
