…if you trust Robert Scoble, that is. He (damn him, we’re jealous) had a chance to try the device out before even the gadget blogs, and he claims (gasp!) that the Facebook experience on it is much better than on the iPhone.

His main points? N97 has got 16:9 video support, better camera than the iPhone (5 megapixels), a keyboard (duh), replaceable batteries (so you can “Facebook for days”), and copy and paste support. So, he pretty much takes the obvious advantages of N97 over the iPhone and wraps it into a Facebook-related rant. However, he did actually try out the device, and we’re so hooked on Facebook that we’ll believe anything at this point. Mobile Facebooking on the new N97, here we come!

I have been an active Paypaler for a while now, and I was surprised when Paypal sent me a letter asking me to verify that indeed I am not laundering money. Do I need to send photos of my apartment so it is apparent I do not have a printing press at home?

Nope, I needed to send some ID and utility bills. The process was fairly simple, I took a photo of my phone bill, my AmEx report and both sides of my National ID. In the Paypal documentation they say a phone bill is not ok, but since my apartment is not on my name I don’t pay bills per se. Nevertheless, I sent these all off.

After some mucking about (the form was not the best), Paypal accepted these documents and this, as a lot of government and verification processes puzzles me a bit. I mean I could’ve Photoshopped all that right? Unless they actually checked with my government and bank and carrier service, which I’m sure they didn’t, they replied in like 2 days, they can’t be really sure.

My reasoning is that someone like me would have to go to more trouble to prove his identity and location truthfully, than a money launderer would have to go to to forge this stuff. If I didn’t have a camera I would’ve had to spend about $30 to photocopy, print, scan and so on. A money launderer may have to pay $1,000 for a good forgery, but hey, he has a printing press right, money comes easily.

The point is, that all I proved is that I have an internet connection and probably an ID. Is this a process that is supposed to deter people on the wrong side of the law? I doubt if it does, it did deter me though, my account was even frozen for a while!

This prototype tactile iPhone case called Invisual allows sight-impaired users to get the most out of the smart phone. It would work in conjunction with special accessibility functions, such as text-to-speech features and moon type tactile alphabet keyboard.

Portugal-based designer Bruno Fosi crafted the silicon case with modified bas-relief buttons that correspond to the iPhone home screen. Fosi says that the iPhone thus covered keeps all its functions intact, including multi-touch and finger flick scrolling.

Linux recently joined the Apple’s iPhone platform. It simply means that the Linux OS can now be run on the iPhone. Linux OS on iPhone is controlled through a USB keyboard and supports the first and second generation of iPhones and the first generation of iPod Touch. This may open up door for Google’s Android as there is a possibility to run it on the iPhone. If that really happens then it would create a lot of problem for Apple as they will have to fight in their own territory.

Continuing with the holiday shopping theme I started yesterday, Snappr ( snappr.mobi ) is an online shopping search and price comparison site. It's the mobile variant of Snappr.net on the web. Snappr...

Continuing with the holiday shopping theme I started yesterday, Snappr (snappr.mobi) is an online shopping search and price comparison site. It's the mobile variant of Snappr.net on the web. Snappr is new, both the .net and the .mobi launched this year.

The mobile site opens to a simple search box where you can enter a product name or the number that appears under the UPC bar code found on most products. Snappr returns a list of products with price, a picture and user rating if available. The site is available in English and German and can be used anywhere in the world.

Does this sound familiar? Snappr is a near clone of Barcle which I reviewed in Feburary. To Snappr's credit, it's a more attractive site than Barcle and seems to work better too. Searching is much faster and the bar code database seems more complete. In a quick test with three products, a prepaid mobile phone, a book, and an analog to digital TV converter box, Snappr found the phone and the book, while Barcle found none of the items. Plus, Snappr shows prices in the search results list, while Barcle requires you to drill down into each item's detail page to find the cost.

It's not all rosy with Snappr though. Products are returned in random order rather than sorted in some logical fashion like by price from lowest to highest. The prices shown are often wildly different than the actual price on the retailer's site. Like that SIM card for $1.19 shown in the screenshot. The actual price on Amazon is 29.99! There doesn't seem to be a pattern, sometimes Snappr's price is higher than the real price, sometimes lower.

Like almost every mobile shopping site, actually making a purchase can be difficult. There is a "Buy.." link for each item which goes to the retailer offering the product. But the link often goes to a full web page that is impossible to use on a mobile. Fortunately many of Snappr's items are sourced on Amazon.com which does deliver a mobile page whenever it detects a mobile browser. Registered Amazon users with a credit card on file can even make "1-click" purchases on the Amazon mobile site.

Snappr also has an iPhone app that can use the phone's camera to capture product bar codes so you don't have to key in those long strings of digits. That's a great idea which I hope they extend to other platforms. I don't have an iPhone to try it out with but according to a post on the Agregated Intelligence Blog, it works but is harder to use than Android's ShopSavvy due to limitations of the iPhone's SDK. Source: Mobility.mobi

Some questions

Is it easy to install and configure?

In their own words

“Track your mobile carbon footprint. Reduce and offset it. Inspire others to do the same. All from your phone. And all for free.”

Why it might be a killer

Stopping climate change is a real concern in the days we are living through, and any contribution to the cause is a welcome addition.

What it does

In the words of the five-men team behind it, Ecorio enables you to “track your mobile carbon footprint. Reduce and offset it. Inspire others to do the same. All from your phone. All for free”. This is a very apt definition of what this app sets out to do, and the issues it attempts to redress.

Once you have installed Ecorio, it will run in the background of your phone and keep tack of the car and bus journeys you undertake. A summary will be eventually produced, and then you can set down to buying offsets in relation to your carbon footprint figures.

That is, once you have figured out what is your personal contribution to global warming from activities like driving, you can fund activities that reduce greenhouse gas emissions to balance out the situation.

In addition to that, Ecorio makes it possible to you to find out public transit and carpooling information for each trip, and find the best routes available in an instant fashion.

As a conclusion, this is a well-developed application that deserves your attention if only because of the important role it can play out as regards stopping climate change.

Link: http://www.ecorio.org
Our Review: http://www.killerstartups.com/Mobile/ecorio-org-track-your-mobile-carbon-footprint

Nokia has come out with a really cool offering for its 7310 phone that lets you design the cover. Nokia’s flash-based website service called Nokia Build enables you to build your own Nokia 7310 Supernova before buying it. I tried out the website and it’s quite easy to go through. The tools are pretty slick, with lots of default backgrounds, stickers, drawing options, and an upload picture option from your computer.

The service has launched in the UK, and is expected to come elsewhere as well. The site offers a delivery service as well, which is a lot like the Nike website: NikeID.

Telephone is a recently launched Facebook application that lets you make free VoIP calls directly from Facebook. There are several other applications that enable you to do this on Facebook and other networks like MySpace and Bebo, but Telephone, launched by BabyTel, is adding a few extra features to hopefully make it worth your while.

After adding the Telephone app to your Facebook account, you can launch the service and make phone calls directly to your Facebook friends. In order to make a VoIP call, both you and your friend will need to also have the application as well as the downloadable software. But the good thing about having the software installed on your computer is that the Telephone app can then be used as a standalone desktop application for sending and receiving calls even when you don’t have Facebook open in a web browser.

Similar to Skype, you can make VoIP calls and send instant messages. And similar to Digsby, the desktop app enables you to communicate with Facebook friends without having to be logged into Facebook. So with so many features similar to existing applications, is it worth it to try the Telephone application at all?

There are a few features that may be of interest to you, depending on how often you need to communicate with Facebook friends. For instance, Telephone allows you to organize friends into groups for easy access and messaging, as well as leave voicemails for friends that aren’t currently available to talk. Telephone also displays your call history for additional information. The call history could prove useful given its direct integration with your Facebook network, offering insight into your own personal behavior and communication patterns.

I imagine such data could be useful to other services as well, from a non-personal standpoint. But one thing I’d love to see on the Telephone app is a more direct integration with Facebook’s existing chat tool, similar to Tokbox’s integration. This way, you can invite friends to add the Telephone app in a more direct manner, and more readily initiate VoIP calls with friends as well.

While the application is robust, it doesn’t appear as though the uptake has been good. A quick look at the application chart shows that traffic to the application has dropped significantly over the past month. While we’d assume that this trend will continue, perhaps the company will adopt practices that make the application more viral under the new design. For now we will have to wait and see. Go install the telphone application and judge for yourself how successful this will be.

During a breaking news event, we typically sit glued to a Twitter search. And yet that method of tracking news in real time is fairly embryonic: it’s the first step towards all the world’s data becoming real time, and available via constantly updated news feeds.

That’s the basis of StanzIQ, a real time search and information app being developed to track everything from emerging terrorist situations to seeing the feedback on a live concert - on your phone, while you’re in the crowd.

True Ventures Funding

On paper at least, it’s a good bet, with backing from a top VC firm and an experienced team. StanzIQ will soon announce a $1.5 million funding round from True Ventures, and the group consists of Jack Moffitt, Patrick Mahoney and Brian Zisk, who, along with Jon Callaghan of True Ventures, were partners in Green Witch Internet Radio (an early open source streaming service acquired by CMGI in January 2000). Moffitt was one of the lead developers of XMPP (Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol), a set of open XML technologies for real-time communication. And it’s XMPP that forms the basis of StanzIQ.

The Chesspark Connection

The other consumer app you might remember this team for: Chesspark. As the company explained to Mashable:

The StanzIQ team originally built a phenomenal XMPP-based infrastructure for acquiring, sorting, and distributing data in real time in order to build the Internet chess community Chesspark. The aim was to build a real time game and community on top of the XMPP suite of protocols which is perfect for managing real time data. We have spun off the chess site and turned our attention and our toolset to a much bigger challenge.

The StanzIQ team has lead the drive on building numerous Open Source Applications and Protocols which are now used by companies ranging from giants like Microsoft to indie developers like Rogue Amoeba, not to mention their work on XMPP which is used by companies including Google, Cisco, Neuros and Yamner. StanzIQ has a number of Open Source tools which it has built, some of which are also licensed commercially including Speeqe, Strophe (in 3 languages), Punjab, and Palaver.

All of which sounds great in theory, but the proof will be in the real time results. We’ve yet to see any. And until we get our hands on this thing, we’re reserving judgment.

Google has published its plan to build into Chrome what is arguably its most requested feature: the ability to accept extensions that can customize how the open-source Web browser operates.

And guess what? Google's dependence on advertising notwithstanding, one of the extension examples the company points to is the ability to block advertisements.

The Chrome extensions document, spotlighted Saturday by Google programmer Aaron Boodman, doesn't include a timeline, but it does shed light on why the project is a priority for Chromium, the open-source project behind Chrome.

"Chromium can't be everything to all people," according to the document. "User-created extensions have been proposed to solve these problems: the addition of features that have specific or limited appeal; users coming from other browsers who are used to certain extensions that they can't live without; bundling partners who would like to add features to Chromium specific to their bundle."

When Google launched Chrome three months ago, it promised a Chrome extensions framework. Extensions are a popular feature of Chrome's most likely rival, Mozilla's Firefox, and one very popular extension is AdBlock Plus.

And AdBlock makes a specific appearance on the list of extension uses that Google said it would like to support eventually:

• Bookmarking/navigation tools: Delicious Toolbar, StumbleUpon, Web-based history, new tab page clipboard accelerators.

• Content enhancements: Skype extension (clickable phone numbers), RealPlayer extension (save video), Autolink (generic microformat data--addresses, phone numbers, etc.)

• Content filtering: AdBlock, Flashblock, privacy control, parental control

• Download helpers: video helpers, download accelerators, DownThemAll, FlashGot

• Features: ForecastFox, FoxyTunes, Web Of Trust, GooglePreview, BugMeNot

Demand for extensions is real.

In an unscientific CNET News poll about why people don't use Chrome, about 19 percent pointed to the lack of an extensions feature. And on Google's issue tracking site for Chromium, a Chrome extensions feature is the top-requested item.

"Of all the Firefox plug-ins, this is the one essential one," said Firefox user Ole Eichhorn. "Chrome is faster until you factor in all the cruft that gets downloaded as ads, then it isn't faster anymore. When Chrome supports AdBlock, it will be the winner, but until it does, Firefox is the only choice."

In its document, Google described some of its goals for Chrome extensions. The extensions should silently update, just like Chrome does. They should be isolated for security reasons and only get access to resources it's entitled to use. Installation should be easy, taking only two clicks.

They should permit rich user interface options--rich enough to implement some parts of Chrome as extensions, Google said. Among the interface options should be "toolbars, sidebars, content scripts (for Greasemonkey-like functionality), and content filtering (for parental filters, malware filters, or AdBlock-like functionality)," Google said. Some interfaces will require the user to grant specific permissions, such as "access to the history database" or "access to mail.google.com," Google said.

Google will play a major role in extensions, providing a central service that can be used to issue updates and to blacklist "malicious or harmful extensions" so the browser won't use them.

"It's likely in the future we may want to provide a consumer front-end which would allow users to more easily find the most popular, highest quality and trustworthy extensions," Google also said.
