Back In Time is a simple backup system for the GNOME desktop inspired by the "flyback project" and "TimeVault". The backup is done by taking snapshots of a specified set of directories. All you have to do is configure: where to save snapshot, what directories to backup, and when a backup should be done (manually, every hour, every day, every week, or every month). It acts as a "user mode" backup system. This means that you can backup and restore only folders to which you have write access.

We start the Ghacks Christmas Giveaway with a bang. Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 is the flagship product of Kaspersky and it is up for grabs for five lucky commenters. All you need to do to enter the giveaway is to leave a comment. Please spread the word so that your friends, family and colleagues can enter the giveaway as well).

Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 includes the Kaspersky Antivirus components but extends the protection of the computer system beyond that. At the core stands it antivirus and anti-malware engine that is protecting the system from those threats. The Internet Security 2009 suite adds to that a two-way personal firewall, content filtering and data & identity theft protection.

Several new features have been integrated into the 2009 edition of the software. This includes the ability to restore previous system settings after cleaning malware, security ratings for unknown applications, a virtual keyboard to protect against phishing and keyloggers and the automatic access restriction (user data folders) for unknown applications.

Installation of the software suite should not be problematic although it requires the uninstallation of other applications of its kind before the installation can be completed (Multiple firewalls or antivirus programs can interfere with each other). Inexperienced users can and should keep the automatic settings while experienced users can configure the layers of protection manually. It does not make much sense for example to enable the Anti-Dialer module if the user is connecting to the Internet over a network.

The interface of Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 has been redesigned. It is divided into the four blocks Protection, Scan, Update and License.

Protection: Various protection layers can be analyzed and configured in this entry. It is also providing access to various tools like the creation of a Rescue Disk, a Security Analyzer or Network Monitor.

Scan: Perform a quick or full scan of the computer system.

Update: Will check and download updates

License: License information. Will list the validity period of the application

Inexperienced users will love the automatism of the software program. The initial scan of the system will add automatic rules for most applications that are installed on the system. Kaspersky Internet Security did add applications like Firefox, Thunderbird or Teamspeak to the list of trusted applications which in turn meant that no “Do you want to permit” windows where launched when the application was started.

Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 is compatible with all 32-bit and 64-bit editions of Windows XP and Windows Vista. A trial version is available that can be used for 30 days without restrictions.

The Giveaway:

Kaspersky gave us five program suites and we will give all five to you. Just post a comment before December 2 12:00 CET and you are taking part in the Giveaway. Make sure to include an email address so that we can contact you with the details in case that you have won.

How many times in your life you accidentally clean your wastebasket on your desktop and felt sorry a minute ago. Too late, the file you planned restoring was gone forever. The tool presented in this publication will change the situation. You will be able to get your file back with high probability for the success, if the time between deletion and recovery attempt is small.

SoftPerfect File Recovery is a free and useful tool to restore accidentally deleted files from hard and floppy disks, USB flash drives, CF and SD cards and other storage media. It supports the popular file systems such as FAT12, FAT16, FAT32, NTFS and NTFS5 with compression and encryption. If your important files disappeared and you can’t find them in the recycle bin, try this software product and get the files back to life. Easy to use, no installation is required.

MAIN FEATURES

* Lightweight (268 KB only).
* Supports FAT & NTFS.
* Supports compressed and encrypted volumes.
* Supports most storage media.
* Easy to use, just run it!
* Completely portable, works from removable media, and does not leave any residual traces.
* Software is free to use for any purposes, as soon as the code is not modified.

Note that when you restore the files from the main boot-up Hard Drive, the success rate might be lower due to the considerations of the time to recovery parameter. The software is able to restore accidentally deleted files from built-in hard disk drives as long as two the following conditions are met:

1. The file was deleted recently and no writing was made on the volume after that.
2. So, if you delete a file from a system volume (e.g. C:’), there are little chances to restore it because the OS is constantly writing on this volume (logs, registry branches, etc).
These new disks are 10 –20 times faster than the hard disks with platters that we all use, but they still have small capacity.

Read the following articles to gain a better understanding of why Microsoft is trying to slim down windows7. I think it is for the best.. Vista was JUST TOO BIG!

1)

http://apcmag.com/windows_7_gets_ssdfriendly.htm
Another SSD-centric focus for Microsoft is ensuring that Windows 7 can fit
on the smaller solid state drives of netbooks. While most of today's
SSD-equipped netbooks ship with a maximum 8GB drive, this is expected to
double within the coming year. And it'll need to, because Windows 7 will lay
claim to almost half of that space.
At last week's WinHEC confab, Microsoft senior lead program manager Leon
Braginski said that the OS and auxiliary files - ranging from restore files,
temp and system log points and disk space reserved for hibernation - will
require only 8GB, leaving the remainder free for applications and user data.
"The entire install of Windows 7 will be smaller than Vista," Braginski
said, making 16GB "enough for a good Windows 7 experience."

2)

http://www.betanews.com/article/Windows_7_will_be_lean_faster_and_even_embedded/1225234917
Microsoft still uses Windows XP for its embedded platform, despite the
operating system being 7 years old. The company hasn't been able to slim
down Windows Vista enough to make it workable in embedded environments.
There is an "Embedded Enterprise" version of Vista, but it has the same
hardware requirements as the full OS and simply offers a customizable
interface.
Sinofsky said that Microsoft has done a lot of work to fix the slowdowns and
bulk introduced in Windows Vista. From boot times, to menu response, Windows
7 promises to be leaner and faster than its predecessor.

Last week Apple released the latest firmware 2.2 for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Thanks to the team at iPhone-dev, the jailbreaking app – Pwnage Tool and QuickPwn were released days after the firmware release. If you are looking for a simple guide to easily jailbreak your 3G iPhone, here it is.

Note:

1) The tutorial I am going through below is only for the 3G iPhone using the Pwnage tool. This is meant for iPhone users who want to preserve their baseband firmware in the hope of unlocking it in the future. For those who already have an unlocked iPhone or who don’t care about unlocking their iPhone, a quicker and faster method is to use the QuickPwn.

2) This method does not work on the latest generation of Macbooks. If you are using the late 2008 model aluminum MacBook, MacBook Pro, or MacBook Air, you will not be able to jailbreak your iPhone.

Disclaimer:

I have tested this tutorial on my Macbook and iPhone and it works well. Your results may vary.

Preparation

Download the Pwnage Tool (torrent file) and iPhone 3G firmware 2.2.

Starting the Jailbreaking process

Open your Pwnage Tool. At the top menu, select the Expert mode.

Select the iPhone 3G image.

The tool will now scan your computer for the firmware. Select the one that you have just downloaded.

The next page is where you need to pay a little more attention. When you are in the “General” tab there are a few things you must take care of. Here you will decide your partition size - 530 MB should be good. Next, if you are using your iPhone on an official carrier (AT&T, O2, Rogers, etc.) uncheck “Activate the phone”. Lastly, check “Disable partition wipe-out”. Hit the arrow button to continue.

Click on the ‘Build’ button to start building the custom firmware. It will first prompt you for the location to save the custom firmware. The whole firmware building process will take about 5-10 minutes.

Once it is done, it will instruct you to turn your iPhone to DFU mode. Follow the instructions :

first, switch off your iPhone

hold the power and home button for 10 seconds

release the power button and continue to hold the home button for another 10 seconds

If everything went correctly, your iPhone should now be in DFU mode.

Back to your iTunes, press the Alt/Option button and click ‘Restore’. Select the custom firmware that you have just saved. Sit back or go for your coffee break.

Your iPhone should now be jailbroken.

If you have any problems, please leave questions in the comments and we’ll do our best to help. Or maybe you know of a similar free application that can do the same job but better? If so, tell us about it.

I’m sure you fellows have already came to know about the iPhone 2.2 firmware and many of us might be wandering if this firmware could be unlocked. Well the answer is yes but only for the iPhone 2G.

The new 2.2 firmware is a must have firmware upgrade because it brings cosmetic and productive changes, like the Safari re-design, new notification icon for EDGE and other unique features such as Google Street View and Podcasts.

Thanks to iPhone Devteam and Pwnage, QuickPwn Tools, we can have these features without locking up our iPhones. The method I’m going to share with you only works for iPhone 2G but later on we will have some jailbreaking for iPhone 3G for 2.2 firmware.

The method is really simple, all you got to do is download the new Pwned iPhone 2.2 firmware and restore it to your iPhone using iTunes. This is now it goes.

Download the Pwned iPhone 2.2 Firmware for iPhone 2G created using Pwnage tool (links below).

Extract the archives and you would get a file named iPhone1,1_2.2_5G77_Custom_Restore.ipsw (245MB).

Now connect your iPhone to your PC via USB cable and open iTunes 8 (Cancel if its asks you to update your iPhone).

Make sure you backup all your contacts, music, videos and other stuffs on your iPhone.

Hold shift and click Restore and locate the Pwned iPhone 2.2 Firmware.

Wait till its all done and you should be smiling with your unlocked firmware 2.2 iPhone.

You could also go by creating your own custom firmware with Pwnage or QuickPwn but this method is so much easier and works perfectly with iTunes on Mac or PC.

Download the iPhone 2.2 for 2G using the Rapidshare links below.

After spending some time (obviously not enough time) searching for a new laptop for
the wife (and yes, a little for me) I settled on a Sony Vaio FW-139 that was on Best
Buy's outlet center. It had a newer Intel Core 2 Duo P8400, 3GB of ram, an ATI HD
34xx video card and a 16.4" screen all for $849.

I ordered it on Sunday night and it was here on Wednesday, so far so good. It came
with Vista 32 bit and I wanted to put Server 2008 64bit so I could run hyper-v. No
problem I thought, I'll just wipe it and install from scratch. I even followed the
instructions to create a recovery dvd so I could restore the laptop to it's factory
state.

So I got Server 2008 64bit installed, and went to go look for drivers, and here is
where I realized I made a mistake in picking out this laptop. I assumed that Sony
would have 64bit drivers for this model, well they didn't. I spent about 4 hours rounding
up drivers and got just about everything working. Not a big deal I though, and it
was my fault that I didn't check on the driver situation first.

Went to fire up hyper-v and it said it couldn't start because the VT flag was disabled.
No problem right? Just reboot, go into the BIOS and.....wow, this is the most bare
bones bios I have EVER seen. I can change the boot order and that's it. Off to Google
I went, and found out I was not alone. Sony disables the VT flag and does not give
you an option to enable it. Some people have gotten creative and used a dos utility
to edit the NVRAM directly, but the register you have to edit varies by model/bios.

I think someone said it's listed in the fine print somewhere that the VT flag is disabled,
but even if that's true, I'm still calling BS on this. I'm not going to mess around
with the NVRAM on a brand new computer for something that shouldn't be disabled in
the first place.

Tomorrow I will be going to Best Buy to hopefully return the Sony and start my search
once again. I really liked that P8400 processor, as it runs at 25w instead of 35w,
which is what the T5800 runs at (the T5800 is the most common processor in the price
range I was looking at).

Given how much time I have spent researching, I think I might up my price to $1000
and hopefully save me some time. That should give me a few more options when looking
for a laptop with a discrete video card as well.

TCP Optimizer is one of those tiny but great freeware programs. You don’t even need to install it, just download and run. And once you launch the program take a deep breath and relax. Because you can optimize your internet connection with just a few clicks. That’s right. Just select your network adapter, your bandwidth and check “optimal settings”. Click “Apply” and that’s about it.

If you’re an advanced user don’t worry, there’s stuff for you to. You can go through all the menus and fine tune your internet connection up to its limits. If the tweaks you make don’t work out don’t worry, you can easily restore the previous settings. Anyway, if you use the beginner or advanced options you’ll get a result: your internet connection will be faster. Mine surely is now.
