xorriso creates, loads, manipulates, and writes ISO 9660 filesystem images with Rock Ridge extensions.
It can load the management information of existing ISO images, and it writes the session results to optical media or to filesystem objects. This is the standalone version that incorporates the libraries of libburnia-project.org and thus depends only on Linux 2.4 (or later), libc, and libpthread. No separate mkisofs and no CD/DVD burn program are needed.

Changes:
xorriso now is ready for exotic character sets, for legacy FreeBSD systems that expect an outdated Rock Ridge signature, and for producing ISO images with MBR that boot from hard disks or USB sticks. Three minor bugs were fixed.

Continuing with the holiday shopping theme I started yesterday, Snappr (snappr.mobi) is an online shopping search and price comparison site. It's the mobile variant of Snappr.net on the web. Snappr is new, both the .net and the .mobi launched this year.

The mobile site opens to a simple search box where you can enter a product name or the number that appears under the UPC bar code found on most products. Snappr returns a list of products with price, a picture and user rating if available. The site is available in English and German and can be used anywhere in the world.

Does this sound familiar? Snappr is a near clone of Barcle which I reviewed in Feburary. To Snappr's credit, it's a more attractive site than Barcle and seems to work better too. Searching is much faster and the bar code database seems more complete. In a quick test with three products, a prepaid mobile phone, a book, and an analog to digital TV converter box, Snappr found the phone and the book, while Barcle found none of the items. Plus, Snappr shows prices in the search results list, while Barcle requires you to drill down into each item's detail page to find the cost.

It's not all rosy with Snappr though. Products are returned in random order rather than sorted in some logical fashion like by price from lowest to highest. The prices shown are often wildly different than the actual price on the retailer's site. Like that SIM card for $1.19 shown in the screenshot. The actual price on Amazon is 29.99! There doesn't seem to be a pattern, sometimes Snappr's price is higher than the real price, sometimes lower.

Like almost every mobile shopping site, actually making a purchase can be difficult. There is a "Buy.." link for each item which goes to the retailer offering the product. But the link often goes to a full web page that is impossible to use on a mobile. Fortunately many of Snappr's items are sourced on Amazon.com which does deliver a mobile page whenever it detects a mobile browser. Registered Amazon users with a credit card on file can even make "1-click" purchases on the Amazon mobile site.

Snappr also has an iPhone app that can use the phone's camera to capture product bar codes so you don't have to key in those long strings of digits. That's a great idea which I hope they extend to other platforms. I don't have an iPhone to try it out with but according to a post on the Agregated Intelligence Blog, it works but is harder to use than Android's ShopSavvy due to limitations of the iPhone's SDK. Source: Mobility.mobi

Maybe all our refined, enlightened interests are lost in the long tail, because Britney Spears once again was the most popular search subject in 2008 on Yahoo.

For Yahoo, Spears wasn't the only pop-culture icon in Yahoo's top 10 searches. Also on the list were Miley Cyrus at No. 4, Jessica Alba at No. 6, Lindsay Lohan at No. 7, and Angelina Jolie at No. 9.

Apparently a lot of people are curious about World Wrestling Entertainment, because WWE was No. 2. The online game RuneScape was No. 5, anime series Naruto was No. 7, and American Idol finished in 10th place on Yahoo's list.

Yahoo also broke down searches for various other subjects. For economic searches, the top 10 list started with IRS stimulus checks, then followed with oil prices, gold prices, gas prices, Dow Jones, Sallie Mae, stock market, AIG, foreclosures, and debt consolidation. The list reveals that people use general-purpose searches for everything ranging from how-to advice to the latest news.

In the people of politics, President-elect Barack Obama led the list. Next came Sarah Palin, John McCain, Hillary Clinton, George Bush, Ron Paul, John Edwards, Mike Huckabee, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Mitt Romney.

AOL also shared its top search terms for 2008, though it didn't break out overall terms.

Ask.com also spotlighted popular 2008 searches, and has a few variations on the standard search categories. Its top questions are as follows:

1. How do I get pregnant?</ br>
2. How do I lose weight?</ br>
3. How do I write a resume?</ br>
4. How much is minimum wage?</ br>
5. How much is my car worth?</ br>
6. How do I change my name?</ br>
7. What is the meaning of life?</ br>
8. How do I register to vote?</ br>
9. Why is the sky blue?</ br>
10. How do I download videos?</ br>

And since Ask.com bought Dictionary.com earlier this year, it's releasing top search terms for that site. People's vocabulary expansion efforts concentrated on these terms: maverick, socialism, economy, recession, radical, cyclone, solace, realtor, environment, and potholes.

Apparently Google, which has shared search trends on its annual Zeitgeist list since 2001, didn't get the memo to release its results Monday, but expect it to cough up some new results soon--and, I hope, some of the accompanying graphs.

DRBPoll is a simple PHP poll script that doesn't
require a database. It allows you to put a poll
form on virtually any page on your Web site. The
results page displays a colored bar graph of the
votes. The look and feel of the poll form and
results page can be customized using a standard
CSS file. Data is stored in flat files, so no
database is required.

Technology Review, a publication with the imprimatur of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, analyzes Yotify.com with some able help of the Kelsey Group. Andrew Freiburghouse’s “Making Search Social” reveals quite a bit about Yotify.com and about what the MIT-endorsed publication finds newsworthy. First, click here to read the full text of the October 10, 2008. You will have to dismiss the MIT-endorsed pop up advertisement and then you can read the full-text of the Yotify.com review. Man, I hate those pop ups, but if MIT likes them, what’s the opinion of an addled goose matter? Not a whit I assure you.

Mr. Freiburghouse explains that a Yotify query is an alert with smarts. Yotify.com uses the word “scout”. Users provide information about their interests, and Yotify combines ads, collaboration, and search. To be fair, Mr. Freiburghouse notes that Yotify.com is skewed to shopping. And, towards the foot of the article, Mr. Freiburghouse quotes the Kelsey Group regarding Google’s market share. A consumer oriented search system, even with the lift of social search and software agent technology has its work cut out to gain market share.

I gave Yotify.com a quick look to refresh my memory. I ran a query for “quad core processor” and the system at 8 10 pm Eastern displayed:

A user can share results, get alerts hourly or daily, and use the related searches feature to refine the query.

This type of system will appeal to an individual who wants to obtain shopping, travel, and articles listed in classified ad systems. I fiddled with the Web log function, but it was less useful than the shopping content. Over time, the Yotify.com index will add poundage.

Why did Technology Review rev its engine when it learned about Yotify.com? My speculation is that Yotify.com is different from Google. Yotify offers social and collaborative functions. Yotify has lots of buttons, controls, and options to make the user feel as if he or she has control over the results. I think an hourly update on a “quad core CPU” might be just what the doctor ordered for a Technology Review editor needing a break from the intellectual cage match at the publication.

I am waiting for Yotify.com to create an enterprise version. Granted the Craigslist.org content may have to be swapped out for something more substantive. Procurement teams and information technology professionals looking to deploy a search system that works may find the Yotify.com technology applied to a regulated industry like pharmaceuticals just the cure for ails information access. Until there is an enterprise version, I like Yotify.com as a system that offers some interesting features for consumers. If you are intrigued by consumer search systems, give Yotify.com some attention.

American Airlines last year sued Google for serving ads on its search results that took the users to sites other than American Airlines, when they searched for “American Airlines” or similar keywords. The argument made by American Airlines was that, Google is infringing on American Airlines trademarks by allowing others to buy ads for the keywords. Google didn’t contested the lawsuit and quietly settled out of court.

Having tasted blood, American Airlines is at it again – and now they are suing Yahoo for doing exactly the same thing. But this time the results aren’t the same as American Airlines might have expected, as Yahoo has decided to fight back because some in the law profession believe that the law is not clear about it. However the one thing that Yahoo has done is to make sure that it doesn’t serve ads besides “American Airlines” keywords till the dispute is settled.

Pownce, the microblogging service often compared to Twitter, has been acquired by Six Apart. According to the company blog, the service will be shutdown on December 15th, while the main Pownce team – Leah Culver and Mike Malone – will join Six Apart. Users will have the option to “import [their] posts to other blogging services such as Vox, TypePad, or WordPress.”

The brainchild of Culver and Digg founder Kevin Rose, Pownce launched with much fanfare in 2007. But despite the early buzz and in many ways a superior feature-set, the service hasn’t been able to gain nearly the type of traction as the darling of short-form messaging – that of course being Twitter.

It doesn’t sound like Six Apart has aspirations to revamp Pownce and take on Twitter either. They echo the sentiment that this deal is more about acquiring talent from Pownce, writing, “we are very sorry the site will be closing … We’re planning on doing great things with the help and expertise of the Pownce team, and can’t wait to see all the results of their hard work.”

Kevin Rose and Daniel Burka will also be joining Six Apart as advisers as part of the deal.
