Who hasn’t noticed those little RSS subscribe buttons (Add to Google, My Yahoo, Netvibes) popping up all over the web like Starbucks in the suburbs? If you’re like me, you were drawn into the gadget-rich world of iGoogle by just one of these buttons.

One minute I was trawling for articles, blissfully convinced that Facebook was all I’d ever need to connect me to items of real time relevance. The next I was pulled into a vortex created by masterminds so ambitious and intrusive, they plan to index the worlds information. Yes, I’m talking about Google (and their latest uber-success, iGoogle).

iGoogle began its life with the name ‘Google Personalised Homepage’, briefly became ‘Google IG’, and a few makeovers later, emerged as iGoogle, a name that makes it sound like an Apple product (iPod, iTunes). Nobody seems to agree on what the most popular startpage service is but iGoogle is up there. Users are so passionate about their iGoogle pages that recent changes were met with uproar and violent protestation. The ‘changes’ were basically a new sidebar and the removal of some gadget resizing privileges. Yep, people are obsessed.

iGoogle isn’t just for accessing feeds from your favourite sites; there is a growing catalogue of gadgets from reputable developers. Google are also inviting people to create gadgets, both practical ones and social stuff of the ‘here’s what I’m up to right now’ Twitter/Facebook variety. You can see why people are saying it’s the next Facebook. What’s good about iGoogle is that the gadgets tend to be useful (feeds, search aids, shortcuts), not vacuous (throw a mudpie at your friends! become a werewolf/pirate/vampire!) and no one - absolutely no one - is going to poke you, ‘get low with’ you, post lewd comments your mum can read or invite you to rate their sexiness.

Here are the best of the best iGoogle gadgets for streamlining your online life:

1. A Podcast Player

If I say “I heart this” does that blow or bolster its case? A Podcast Player is a neat little player with a search facility; enter your search term into the bar at the top, choose your favourite podcast directory from the scroll-down list, and away you go. The options are Feedster, all4RSS, Podkast, Digitalpodcast and Podscope.

If you don’t have a favourite, I recommend the Podscope directory; here you can find a piece of audio according to the words that are spoken in it!

For example, if you want to find podcasts that mention Obama, simply enter ‘Obama’, select ‘Podscope’, press ‘Find’ and voila: ‘A Podcast Player’ returns a list of audio and the exact times (0:53, 1:45, 1:49) the keyword Obama is mentioned! Pretty amazing, and great for people like me who love to listen to news (or any podcast) as they work on the computer. You’ll find a lot of interesting stuff.

2. Driving Directions

The beauty of iGoogle is that the gadgets are integrated so well with key Google services. Driving Directions is the ultimate gadget for people who finds themselves scrolling dumbly in Google Maps or thumbing through a street directory, trying to trace journeys that jump from page 46 to 49B to 109, back to page 46 and so on.

With Driving Directions you have two entry bars (’From’ and ‘To’). Enter your starting address and destination and you’re redirected to Google Maps, where the page is sized just so and your route easily plotted. You also have the option of sharing the map by pressing ‘Send’ or ‘Link’ in the top right hand corner.

Google Maps is great because it contains business information; there is a large and growing catalogue of business locations, so you can search by, say, the name of a restaurant or bar even if you don’t know the address. A good startpage shortcut to a useful service.

3. Digg

Not sure which feeds to track on iGoogle? Why not be a sheep and let public opinion decide? Digg is the ultimate online popularity contest; the Digg iGoogle gadget lets you keep track of the articles people are digging.

Click the tabs at the top of the gadgets to view either News, Video, Images or All Content, or you can opt to see a list of what your friends are digging (if you have any Digg friends).

To filter according to content, open the scroll-down menu in the top righthand corner and choose between Science, Technology, Entertainment, World and Business, Lifestyle, Sports, Gaming and Offbeat. The gadget is updated continuously, so you’ll know as soon as something rises in the Digg ranks. Keep track of what’s creating buzz on the web from the safety of your startpage.

4. Facebook

A sprawling page within a sprawling page. Once upon a time Facebook was my number one web destination. Now it’s just another little box on my iGoogle page. Like a big fish swallowing all the little ones, Google is insatiable and unstoppable.

Who can resist? No need to visit Facebook anymore; just add the Facebook gadget to iGoogle and keep track of who, exactly, is poking you.

5. Memba Velodoc

To be fair, Velodoc is a great large file sharing service, and would deserve a mention even if they didn’t have an iGoogle gadget. The fact that they do just confirms how damn fantastic they are.

Have a large file you can’t send via Hotmail or Gmail? No need to burn a CD, send anything via post, sign up with some paid site, or even register with anyone.

Enter your email into the Velodoc file sharing gadget and the ‘Browse’ button will appear. Search your directories for the file you want to send, click it and send away.

Now, this is what’s great about the Velodoc service. The person you select as your recipient will receive an email. They’ll open it and find a neat little link. They’ll click that link and be directed to another neat little page- minimal text, no images- where they can download your file.

For a while I was using Sendspace (another free large file sharing service) and thought it was fine until I actually opened what I was sending. It was all pop-up ads, blocks of weird text and flashing arrows next to the words ‘Download Here’! After you opened my file everything was good, but that interim page was a killer: really gaudy and unprofessional looking. Not good if you’re sending files that are supposed to land you a job, which is what I was doing.

Don’t make the same mistake I did. Send files linked from nice-looking pages, and do it in your iGoogle. Great for people who send a lot of audio files, images or videos.

6. Anagram

Another shortcut to Google services - this time to Google Accounts and Google Calendar.

Anagram is really just an efficient way to save contact details to Google Accounts and add events to Google Calendar. No need to navigate all the way to Accounts and enter somebody’s number, name, etc. Simply enter their information in the Anagram text box in an incoherent blob. For example

Bob 77447744 3 Grate St

You don’t even need to keep pressing enter. Anagram will do the rest for you. A lazy person’s dream, and perfect for when you need to take details down fast.

Calendar details work the same way; this time you’re writing ‘Staff Lunch 3 November 5:30′. Anagram will understand what you’re doing and submit the information to Google Calendar.

7. Dictionary.com and Wikipedia

Two commonly used references in one handy gadget. Flip from tab to tab to alternate between Wikipedia and Dictionary. Results open in a new window, so your iGoogle is safe and secure.

8. Internet Bandwidth Speed Test

Created by an independent developer and applauded for its accuracy, this quick and easy speed test estimates your bandwidth and places you on a spectrum between plodding dial-up and hardcore DSL.

9. World Webcams

For the voyeur inside us all. Spice up your iGoogle with popular webcams from all over the world. Watch a beach in the south of France one day and a bustling scene from Rio the next. All pared down (of course) to iGoogle size. That’s about 5 x 6 cm, though if you’re really keen you can expand it to fill the page.

10. Random Google Gadgets

There are new gadgets popping up all the time, and we all know that the most useful, innovative stuff isn’t always the most publicised (remember our feature on Google services that get no love?). With this gadget you can test drive a different, random Google app every day, and have the options of keeping stuff you like.

So what gadgets sit on your iGoogle page? Which ones get your love? You might also want to check out Mark’s earlier article from May this year on how to make your own personalised iGoogle gadgets.

After 11 years working in the world’s largest software company, Microsoft, Keith Curtis has written a book, After the Software Wars. Surprisingly enough it isn’t about how life was at Microsoft but much against his former employer’s anticipation he sides with the Open Source to be the software’s future. Microsoft has always had a tough time accepting Open Source, while many others in the business (Sun Microsystems. etc) have readily accepted it and are bent at perfecting and bringing more softwares to add to its growing list (Google for one).

It’s so obvious that with people looking for the cheapest alternative (and those that are worth it) and the Cloud becoming a norm slowly and gradually, paid software will eventually be the story of the past as developers put their heads together to bring the best. A passage from his book reads:

The difference between free, and non-free or proprietary software, is similar to the divide between science and alchemy. Before science, there was alchemy, where people guarded their ideas because they wanted to corner the market on the mechanisms used to convert lead into gold.

Every one of those developers out there is an alchemist and there is no one to guard their collaborative expertise to Open Source every software.

It is early in the morning and I am poking around in my email looking for interesting items on health and medicine search. I am finding that calls for papers for conferences or announcements of competitions in various areas of biomedicine are actually quite interesting and lead to enjoyable and productive hours of surfing and fruitful moments of serendipity. One such case is an email notice I got a few days ago from the magazine Bio-IT World that mentioned its competition, Bio-IT World Best Practices: 2009 Call for Entries:

Reading the come-on to prospective entrants provides some insight into the pressures biotech and pharma generally are facing these days to impress potential investors, analysts and the scientific community (from whence comes the brainpower it needs for survival’s sake):

“Take advantage of this opportunity to showcase your organization’s efforts and talents, and contribute to the industry’s broader knowledge base.

EARLY BIRD DEADLINE (No Fee): December 18, 2008
FINAL DEADLINE FOR ENTRIES: January 21, 2009

Benefits of participation:

* Gain Peer Recognition: Spotlight the talent of your team, and position your organization as a thought leader, among an elite group of life science professionals.
* Heighten Visibility: Use creative positioning to add another layer of credibility in the industry. Entries, nominees and especially winners receive recognition at the Gala Dinner, in widely-distributed press releases, in the Best Practices issue of Bio-IT World magazine, as well as continued coverage on Bio-ITWorld.com and in the Best Practices Compendium of entries.
* Leverage Exposure: Showcase your expertise and unique solutions, and use the exposure as a conduit to valuable connections, investors, sales leads, job candidates, and other external audiences.

Well, it is working with me so far!! I get the magazine and there is always something interesting about how modern science is conducted and the results disseminated.

It was interesting to read what fields are covered in competition:

* Basic Research & Biological Research: Disease pathway research, applied and basic research
* Drug Discovery & Development: Compound-focused research, drug safety
* Clinical Trials & Research: Trial design, eCTD
* Translational Medicine: Feedback loops, predictive technologies
* Personalized Medicine: Responders/non-responders, biomarkers
* IT & Informatics: LIMS, High Performance Computing, storage, data visualization, imaging technologies
* Knowledge Management: Data mining, idea/expertise mining, text mining, collaboration, resource optimization
* Health-IT: ePrescribing, RHIOs, EMR/PHR
* Manufacturing & Bioprocessing: Mass production, continuous manufacturing

I decided to take a look at what was showcased in 2008 and perusing many of the articles linked to is a good way to see how big pharma and big government science are adapting to the world of Science 2.0.

Here is an interesting article for example: Connecting the Cancer Community caBIG Time

Now this is an ambitious undertaking that I had not heard about before. Here is some of what I read here:

caBIG™ stands for the cancer Biomedical Informatics Grid™. caBIG™ is an information network enabling all constituencies in the cancer community – researchers, physicians, and patients – to share data and knowledge. The components of caBIG™ are widely applicable beyond cancer as well.

The mission of caBIG™ is to develop a truly collaborative information network that accelerates the discovery of new approaches for the detection, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of cancer, ultimately improving patient outcomes.

The goals of caBIG™ are to:

* Connect scientists and practitioners through a shareable and interoperable infrastructure
* Develop standard rules and a common language to more easily share information
* Build or adapt tools for collecting, analyzing, integrating, and disseminating information associated with cancer research and care.

Since its inception, caBIG™ has committed to the following cornerstones:

* Federated: caBIG™ software and resources are widely distributed, interlinked, and available to everyone in the cancer research community, but institutions maintain local control over their own resources and data.
* Open-development: caBIG™ tools and infrastructure are being developed through an open, participatory process. caBIG™ leverages existing resources whenever possible, rather than building new tools in every case.
* Open-access:caBIG™ resources are freely obtainable by the cancer community to ensure broad data-sharing and collaboration.
* Open-source: The caBIG™ source code is available to view, alter, and redistribute.

Whoa! That is a pretty sweeping mandate and game plan! This is one heck of a gargantuan undertaking, but when you read about the dynamo behind it and look at how far it has come in a few years you start to have real faith in big government science and realize that within massive research organizations there are some damn impressive people who want to take a machete to stultifying processes and stodgy mindsets that have unnecessarily impeded scientific progress for too long. One such intellectual powerhouse is profiled thus:

Kenneth H. Buetow, Ph.D., is the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Associate Director for Bioinformatics and Information Technology and the Director of the NCI Center for Bioinformatics (NCICB). As Director of the NCICB, Dr. Buetow oversees coordination and deployment of informatics in support of NCI research initiatives and the Center’s participation in the evaluation and prioritization of the NCI’s biomedical informatics research portfolio. Dr. Buetow initiated the cancer Biomedical Informatics Grid™ (caBIG™) pilot project and oversees its activities.

Go, Dr. Buetow, go! Keep the good work! The hope, apparently, is to create a model in the case of cancer that will engender like networks throughout medicine. A worthy, noble goal.

By contrast, to the culture of openness Dr. Buetow exemplifies here is a case of really bad marketing. As I write this column, I am clicking around some of the links in the original Bio-IT World article. I wanted to see to check out what sorts of conferences were advertised for those in the biomedical field. I was rather intrigued by the idea of writing here about the 4th Annual World Healthcare Innovation and Technology Congress. But to get a brochure, you have to register — give me a break! How lame is that?

And then to compound the image of troglodyte thinking and the utter incapacity to grasp the revolution that is Web 2.0 that healthcare IT already has in the rest of the tech world, here is the wording on the press page.

“World Congress press credentials are available to full-time editorial staff writers employed by a trade publication, mainstream media outlet (newspaper, radio, TV, etc.), or online magazines. Freelance writers or contributing editors may request press credentials if the event is being covered for a specific publication.”

Grrrrrrrr. That pretty much excludes tech bloggers who produce some of the best coverage of IT around. If I were in charge of a major tech conference, I would not hire Patrick Golden to be my director of communications. But then I am just a little tech blogger and he has bigger fish to fry. But dissing the tech blogosphere is not the act of a smart person in the age of Web 2.0. No wonder the bright young minds of tech give healthcare a pass so very often–much to my continuing dismay, as someone who works in healthcare.

This is a series of 4 simulators, all written in Cocoa, experimenting with topics such as artificial intelligence with neural networks, cellular automaton, and genetic algorithms. The full source, along with project description and detailed implementation guidelines are included with each project.

Activation/Inhibition Cellular Automaton

This is a simulator written in Cocoa for running a series of experiments and creating Excel files with the results. Activation/Inhibition CAs are similar to how a cell on a zebra determines if it should be white or black. There is no overall governing authority, yet patterns arise naturally. Intermediate example of using Cocoa classes such as open/save panels, notifications and the file manager. Excellent for examining how to code complex mathematical formulas and summations in C code.

Hopfield Network

This is a simulator written in Cocoa to test the relationship between the number of stored patterns in a Hopfield Network and the accuracy with which they are remembered. A very interesting exercise making use of NSOperation and NSOperationQueue for simple multithreading and general Cocoa design patterns such as using a delegate.

Back Propagation Neural Network

Another Cocoa simulator written to investigate the relationship between parameters for a network. Given a set of data, can train the network to recognize that data. Then from there, the network can ’solve’ a problem. In this simulation, there are two mathematical equations that are solved with this network. Illustrates custom views, multithreading, and more.

Genetic Algorithms

The last Cocoa simulator in the series, written to investigate the relationship between input parameters for a given population of organisms over several generations. Parameters include the probability of mutation in the offspring’s chromosomes, number of chromosomes per individual, how much sharing of chromosomes occurs when two individuals mate, and creating your own fitness function to quantify the ‘best fit’ individual based upon the DNA. Multithreading and general Cocoa design patterns.

Going Further

I find this general area of computer science very interesting and would love to spend time researching and learning more about neural networks and genetic algorithms. If you have any suggestions or comments about the code or projects in general, I’d love to hear from you, so drop me an email.

There was a time when computers were used solely for scientific purposes. Of course the everyday man didn’t call it a ‘computer’ back then, but a ‘room’.

Later on, computers were thrown onto the general market. It wasn’t long until the very first games appeared. Pong led the consumer into a new era, and he didn’t stay alone that long.

After a while other games popped up; games you had to enter into the computer yourself, like hangman. They were soon followed by those ‘revolutionary’ floppy disks. Time sped up, and we were playing HiRes Crysis on our CRT monitors sooner than we originally anticipated.

All those overpowered machines in the hands of everyday consumers - and we use them for… playing games? Isn’t that a bit overkill? The overall attitude would be to shrug and go back to those games, but a new trend is rising and it’s popping up in more and more places.

The best known example is probably Folding@Home for the PlayStation 3. This one uses your console’s processor power (during inactive times) to create one big super computer. This supercomputer then starts working on scientific projects, like molecular folding.

Another possibility, and the one we’ll be looking at today, is foldit.

Foldit

Solve puzzles for science. These fun puzzles aren’t of the kind you’ve probably played with during your childhood, but are in fact proteins.

Protewhat?

Proteins are little organic factories that can be found in cells of every living thing. You can see them as the factories that keep a land standing. Without proteins you wouldn’t be able to survive.

These proteins are made of amino acids. They are the building blocks of the factories, the bricks. Each of these amino acids has a small group of atoms, hanging besides them like limbs. To form a protein, all these amino acids are holding hands.

So how do I solve a protein?

Now imagine that these amino acids are all small children, say four or five years old. Instead of standing in a proper line, they’re all over the place.

Your task is to hand out some discipline. Create a more compact group, make sure little Tom’s elbows aren’t where they’re not supposed to be, and so on.

There are several tools you can use to fold the protein. These include:

Shake: this one makes sure none of the sidechains clash (e.g. Tom’s elbow)

Pull

Rubber band: this literally puts rubber bands between pieces of the protein

Wiggle: this one tries to put the protein in a better, more compact state. It also pulls the rubber bands tighter, if applied. Note that a computer ‘wiggle’ can never solve the puzzle as good as a human.

…

The player gets awarded points, the major part of them for compactness. A minimum is stated for each level, but you shouldn’t stop there if you want to advance in the rankings.

And how does this help science?

A protein string always returns to a specific form; the most stable one. By solving these puzzles, a database with all the different folding possibilities is created. Using all these user ’solutions’, one can try to approach the ‘ideal’ protein form.

Here’s a great way to pass some time: browse through some photography archives. Students, teachers, scrapbookers and bloggers may find inspiration as well as material through several different websites. Recently, Life Magazine’s historic photo archive was made available to the public through Google Image Search, which can be accessed directly from the Google homepage.

Some of these images date back as far as 1750 and others are as recent as the 2000’s. You may browse through photos grouped by people (FDR), places (Taj Mahal), events (the Kentucky Derby), sports, or any cultural keyword you can think of.

For example, here’s a word that’s been thrown around lately: “depression.” Type that in to find photos from the Great Depression of the 1930’s. You can start from http://images.google.com/hosted/life or simply add “source:life” to the search box on any Google Image Search page. Framed copies of any photo you find are available for purchase.

Other Image Collections

It should be noted that Life’s sister publication, Time, also has an extensive (but not yet Googleized) photo archive dating back to 1999. It can be found on the Time homepage, but here’s a direct link. You may also use the site’s search function, where photo essays will show up on the right sidebar.

National Geographic magazine offers thousands of beautiful stock photos at NationalGeographicStock which can be searched by keyword. You may also specify whether you want royalty-free images and/or images which may have their rights managed.

NASA’s Johnson Space Center has a collection of over 9000 press-release photos of America’s manned space program. More can be found here. Both can be searched by keyword.

America’s National Archive has but a fraction of its materials in its Archive Research Catalog. However that still amounts to over 140,000 digitized photographs and documents which can be searched by keyword, or leisurely browsed.

Rounding out our list, Image Services at the University of Pennsylvania Library has archives in several categories: Fine Arts, Chemistry, South Asian, or Shakespearean. Certain large images are only permitted for use on UPenn’s domain, however all images can be viewed from outside UPenn.

There’s some beautiful stuff and potential desktop wallpaper to be found in these collections. You may find some more wallpaper fodder via this February article by Tina.

Do you know of any other media treasure-troves? Do you have any favorites? How else can we use archives such as these? Let us know in the comments.

<img src="http://mashable.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/owa-253x53.jpg" align="right"/ border=0/>This article is part of the Open Web Awards, an open, international contest for the best websites and services.

There is no disputing that YouTube is the most popular video site – its videos are viewed 10x more in total than the nearest competitor. And, not surprisingly, YouTube also has the early lead in votes in The Open Web Awards. But a number of other video sites - most of which offer some sort of unique twist beyond simple video sharing – are also getting some love from voters and have an outside shot at victory. Here’s a look at the remaining competitors:

12seconds - as the name suggests, gives you 12 seconds to create a video blog that you can share with friends and family.

ffwd - a video aggregator of professional and personal videos based on your personal preferences and likes.

Outshouts - lets you share your thoughts in audio message form and network with others’ personal “outshouts”

Qik - streams live video from a supported mobile phone.

Sevenload - Germany-based video sharing site, though there is an English version available.

TeacherTube - a video sharing site for education that offers courses in mathematics, literature, science, and more.

Veoh - allows you to watch television online and share videos. Earlier this year, Veoh partnered with Ustream.TV.

Viddler - another video sharing site that also lets you publish 15-second videos.

VideoSurf - gives searchers the ability to find and enjoy videos that meet specific criteria.

Vimeo - a user-generated social video site that offers videos in high definition.

YouTube - The Google-owned video sharing giant.

VOTE OFTEN: One Vote Per Category Per Day

Now it’s time to vote for your favorite video sharing site in the first of two voting rounds. You can vote for one company per day until midnight on November 30th.

If you don't get the word after a couple tries, then you complete the hangman and lose the game. However, if you guess the word, then you win. iHangman gives you plenty of options in the Settings tab -- you can change the timer, have single or multiple players, see the leader board for your iPhone, turn sounds on/off, and choose the word list categories. You have the option to choose from a myriad of word lists including: Animals, countries, sports, SAT, GRE, Science, and more.

This game includes over 36,000 words and their definitions. That's right ... definitions! When you lose or win a game, you are presented with the full word; when you shake your iPhone side-to-side, you will see the definition of the word. This is a very nice feature. Overall, iHangman is a fun game to play, and at $0.99US, it's not very expensive. You can download this game from the iTunes App Store.

Gallery: <a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/ihangman-for-iphone/">iHangman for iPhone
<a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/ihangman-for-iphone/1186902/"><a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/ihangman-for-iphone/1186903/"><a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/ihangman-for-iphone/1186906/"><a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/ihangman-for-iphone/1186909/"><a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/ihangman-for-iphone/1186907/">

TUAWiHangman gives you instant, classic entertainment on the go originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 26 Nov 2008 13:00:00 EST.
