XML Parse Lib is a lightweight set of re-usable
functions for general
purpose parsing, checking, and creation of XML
files. It supports
stream-oriented, SAX, or DOM parsing styles, and
includes an optional
xsd schema validator and a graphical schema
generator. It supports
all valid XML, and includes checking for validity.
It has minimal
dependencies, and is totally self-contained. It is
both speed- and
memory-efficient, and is simple to use.

The ability to handle escaped numeric symbols in
XML files was added. Such values begin with an
ampersand and a pound-sign, followed by a
hexidecimal or base-10 value, and then a
semi-colon.
integration with Sbox2.

Changes:
Builds may be automatically configured. Standard
Makefile, GNU autotools, and Python -type packages
are supported. URLs can be built without an mls
spec (for a fully autodetected build). Version
number and package name can be guessed, based on
package URL. Packages for -dev, -doc, and
-locale-xx are automatically created. Dependency
handling was redesigned to work much faster.
Scratchbox2 was fully integrated. "Vacuum builds"
were added, allowing cross-compilation against a
set of pre-compiled packages.

File deletion can be automated to a certain extend. Take the cache of an Internet browser for example. It can be set to be automatically deleted whenever the browser closes. Or the temporary files of a computer system. They too can be deleted during system shutdown.

Auto Delete (via Shell City) by Dario Volaric is a similar tool for Windows. The main difference is that it will run at system startup or when the user executes it manually. Another difference is that it will only delete files in the directory if they are older than the age specified by the user. The time frame ranges from 1 day to 1 year.

The user can include subfolders automatically, select if the files should be moved into the recycle or if a status window should be shown during the deletion.

The software program will automatically close after the job has ended. The main limitation of it is that it can only process one target folder. It is also unlikely that the software developer will update the program anytime soon because the last update dates back to 2005.

Do you know of a similar application that can delete files if they are older than x? Let us know in the comments.

fwknop implements an authorization scheme called Single Packet Authorization that requires only a single encrypted packet to communicate various pieces of information, including desired access through an iptables or ipfw firewall policy and/or specific commands to execute on the target system. The main application of this program is to protect services such as SSH with an additional layer of security in order to make the exploitation of vulnerabilities much more difficult. The authorization server works by passively monitoring authorization packets via libpcap. Also supported is a robust port knocking implementation based around iptables log messages.

License: GNU General Public License (GPL)

Changes:
Support was added to fwknop for the Linux "any"
interface, which allows SPA packets to be received
on multiple interfaces on a Linux system. Support
was added for interfacing fwknop with third party
software through the addition of three new
variables in the access.conf file (or set globally
in the fwknop.conf file): EXTERNAL_CMD_OPEN,
EXTERNAL_CMD_CLOSE, and EXTERNAL_CMD_ALARM. The
IPTables::* modules were updated to the latest
versions, which are now available via CPAN as
well. IPT_EXEC_STYLE was added to control the
execution method used for iptables commands in the
IPTables::ChainMgr module.
Checking the computer’s running process is the first thing that I’ll do whenever the computer has slowdown problems or infected by spyware/virus. From the task manager, I am able to see which process is hogging the CPU and memory usage that is causing the lag and slowdown. As for malwares, only a well coded spyware that uses rootkit techniques or injection methods will hide its process in task manager. Luckily not many malwares is using rootkit method to hide itself, so identifying malwares from task manager works most of the time.

I do not count on the built-in Windows Task Manager because it is very basic and lacks of many good and advanced features. Having a good task manager such as Process Explorer or AnVir Task Manager on a local computer is a must to analyze the running processes. However, what if you have a few computers to manage? Instead of jumping from one computer to another to check if they are running any illegal software or whether their computer is infected by virus, here is a task manager software that allows you to “remotely” access other computer’s running processes without installing any software on the remote computer.
<!--

With Remote Process Explorer, you will be able to not only get the list of processes but also manage them. You can kill a process, run a new one or change the priority of a process on a local or remote computer. To do it, you do not have to install additional software on a remote computer because the program uses the built-in functions of the operating system. Remote Process Explorer will show you complete information about each running process, when and by whom this process was run, the path to its executable file, how much memory and CPU it uses. You can get all information available in Task Manager not only for your computer, but also for a remote one.

Remote Process Explorer has tools for managing a remote computer built into it. You can switch off a remote computer, restart it or send a message to it. You can also use the standard tools for administering a computer: Remote desktop, Computer management, Event viewer, etc

Before writing about this tool and sharing it with you, of course I’ve done my homework by testing it on my computer first. Both my desktop and laptop are running Windows XP Professional and I couldn’t get it to work. I can view local running processes by not on remote computer. The error message I got was “Could not connect to the remote PC. Error: The RPC server is unavailable“. Sent an email to the developer pf Remote Process Explorer but did not receive any reply. So I had to figure out how to get it to work. I remembered IntelliAdmin had some similar tools that can remotely enable/disable USD drives so I sent him an email for a solution.

After 3 days, Steve from IntelliAdmin kindly replied my emailing informing me that there are 3 requirements that must be met in order for tools like these to work in a local area network workgroup. Do take note that if you have Windows XP Home edition, then none of the below matters since Microsoft has crippled it; so it is not possible for tools like these to work.

1. Make sure the administrator account has a password. Blank password will NOT work.
Go to Control Panel > User Accounts > Create a password for the admin user.
2. Make sure simple file sharing is disabled.
- Go to Control Panel > Folder Options > View tab > Scroll right to the bottom at Advanced Settings > Uncheck Use simple file sharing.
3. Make sure file and printer sharing exception is allowed in the firewall or simply turn off the Windows Firewall.
- Go to Start > Run > type netsh firewall set service type = FILEANDPRINT mode = ENABLE and click OK.

Remote Process Explorer cost $75 for standard license but is free for non-commercial use.
One of my favorite Mac programs is Garage Band. As a musician and songwriter, I am endlessly impressed with how much creativity and flexibility Apple has built into the program, for my money the star of the iLife bundle.

I learned about a new little trick for creating one-touch sound effects using Garage Band’s Musical Keyboard, as described by writer Christopher Breen in MacWorld.

You can map up to 18 of the program’s built-in sound effects (select Sound Effect from the Software Instrument Info pane), or pre-recorded AIFF files dragged from the Finder, to keys on the Mac keyboard (as shown above) and save the whole set as an “Instrument” to be called for use in creating any new podcast or other recording project.

Be sure to see Breen’s article for the step-by-step instructions for utilizing this handy tip.

In their own words

“3-Dimensional e-mail software. Bring e-mail to life. E-mail just got cool and fun.”

Why it might be a killer

It is an approach that works well for a change.

Some questions

What is the price of an activation code?

What it does

Are you tired of the tried an tested approach to e-mail inboxes? If that is the case and you are looking into bringing the whole process alive, then this company seems to have devised the right solution for you.

In essence, a 3D Mail box provides a 3D environment that works with Hotmail,Yahoo Mail and GMail and transforms the whole experience altogether by bringing a sense of humor to the proceedings. The idea is to make your inbox feel like a cross between a movie and a video game.

For instance, one of the available sets places the whole scene at the Los Angeles International Airport, and each e-mail becomes a Jumbo jet that lands or departs as you send and receive e-mail communications. On the other hand, the Miami Beach set will let you feed spam messages to the sharks that are passing by and so on.

If you are interested in such an approach and wish to give 3D Mailbox a try it is possible to buy an activation code online and download the latest version, which weighs about 80 MB.

Link: http://www.3dmailbox.com
Our Review: http://www.killerstartups.com/Web20/3dmailbox-com-3-dimensional-email-software

Networking is one of the most important things you can do in any industry and the graphic design industry is no exception. Below is a list of 6 types of people every graphic designer should know. So start networking with the right people now and you might be able to dodge some bullets and have a more successful career in design!

1. Accountant

Unless you are an expert at something as important as your finances, I would recommend finding an expert. The graphic design career is not always the most financially stable one, especially if you are working freelance or running your own studio. Like most businesses their is often a constant battle to find new clients and actually get your clients to pay up. Having a professional accountant can help you make the most of the money you do have, help you save money and keep things organized you; saving you lots of time and money.

2. Lawyer

No one wants to have to hire a lawyer ( because that often means there’s a problem ), but having a lawyer on hand can is very important. Whether its about negotiating a contract or settling a dispute with clients, having a lawyer ready to go that you trust is very valuable. Start off by asking family and friends if they know anyone and make sure you know what the lawyer specializes in because most lawyers will only accept certain types of cases, so you may need to make contact with several different types of lawyers or a firm that can handle multiple types of issues.

3. Web Designer

Having both graphic and web design skills is great and something to work towards, but many graphic designer prefer to specialize in graphic design, don’t have the time to code websites or just dislike coding sites! If that’s the case then you should have at least two web designer contacts that you can outsource work to when needed. They can help you set up your portfolio site, code websites for clients and help ensure your website is optimized for search engine traffic, meaning more projects for you!

4. A Better Designer

Its always good to have a mentor or at least some one you consider a more experienced designer. Getting honest critiques by some one with a fresh eye is very important. Designers often miss errors and other details after looking at the same design for 10 hours so being able to show other designers your work and get some good feedback is priceless.

5. Another Person in the Industry

Actually, you should have as many contacts in the industry as humanly possible! Knowing people in the industry will help you stay up to date with the latest industry news, jobs openings and much more. be sure to make actual friends and stay in contact though because its rude to talk to some one once and then 3 years later ask for a huge favor! So be professional, respectful and helpful to all your contacts.

6. Photographer

Photography is another valuable skill set not all designers have time to pick up. A great photographer can help you create custom stock photos, textures and even shoot your own work. Showcasing your design projects in real life situations or even just printed and photographed with a nice background is a proven method of getting more clients. It makes viewers of your personal portfolio or studio website more comfortable knowing your work has actually been printed and displayed in public!

Who else should designers know? Let us know in the comments!
