Good news for mobile phone users in Europe, the EU telecom ministers have come a to a decision to reduce prices of sending SMS while users travelled abroad within the limits of the Union. With this decision, carriers wont charge users more than 11 euros for each SMS, charge calls per second after the 31st second and the data downloads be charged at a euro per megabyte of download. EU Telecommunications Commissioner, Viviane Reding welcomed the decision, saying:

Ministers have answered the commission’s call for a speedy response to the SMS and data roaming rip-off very positively…I am confident that with parliament we will ensure that consumers travelling in the EU will save money when sending texts and surfing the web with a mobile phone as of July 1, 2009.

I thought I would never be hearing this but it’s finally here, a web-based p2p startup known as LittleShoot, founded by one of the creators of LimeWire. P2P would definitely be expanded many folds if this models turns out to be a success great in comparison to traditional downloadable file sharing websites.

You just have to enter a search term, and Walla, a plethora of results that you can download right to your computer, ranging from videos via YouTube, images from Flickr, and yes content from LimeWire itself.

LittleShoot requires you to download a 22Mb plug-in before you can run it. I noticed that the downloads were quite speedy and you can also listen to media files via the integrated media player.

People flocked to put their videos and photos on sites like YouTube and Facebook, and those sites now control an astonishing percentage of our digital content. Corporate ads are slapped on personal videos. Privately shared content is taken down due to bogus copyright claims. Sharing has become synonymous with forsaking one’s right to manage one’s own content, the company says.

What do you think, will the new emergence of LittleShoot, bring about a revolutionary change in P2P?

LittleShoot is a new web-based p2p file sharing site founded by one of the creators of LimeWire that could live up to its pedigree and then some. While being web-based naturally makes the service more attractive than downloadable file-sharing apps, LittleShoot has a few other killer features that could make it the new model for p2p.

For one, LittleShoot is starting off by serving as a search index for services that already have billions of files, like YouTube, Flickr, and yes, LimeWire. Thus, searching for just about anything will yield a plethora of results that you can download right to your computer. LittleShoot includes its own player too, so as a video or song is downloading, you can view and listen from the browser.

Speedy Downloads

Once those files are downloaded, they become part of the p2p network that is LittleShoot. Like other p2p services before it, LittleShoot works by downloading pieces of content from other users that have a given file, in the most efficient way possible. The service is optimized not just to find the most nearby computers with the file, but also defaulting (when possible) to users on the same ISP to further pump up the download speeds.

Anonymous Publishing

Publishing files to LittleShoot is also exceptionally easy. You simply browse your hard drive and select the files you’d like to upload. You can add tags to your files to help improve the search index. You can access your files from a “Publish” tab on the site, where you can edit, open, or delete them. LittleShoot requires no registration, which should give users some sense of anonymity in uploading their files (of course, whether copyright holders demand IP addresses at some point is another issue).

Turning Twitter into a p2p Platform

Although not live yet, another big feature LittleShoot has in the works will essentially turn Twitter into a file sharing service. When you upload files, you’ll have the option to tweet a link to them, which in turn will be tremendous viral marketing for LittleShoot while significantly improving the performance of the p2p network, since files will be hosted on more and more computers as they get downloaded.

For Developers

LittleShoot also plans to offer tools to external developers, so “any site can include our javascript library and create a p2p YouTube, for example, but where flash files stream just as if they weren’t p2p,” says co-founder Adam Fisk.

Why Are They Doing This?

There are already a ton of p2p download services, many of which are under constant attack by copyright holders and industry groups. Essentially, Fisk and his team think file sharing has evolved in the wrong direction in the Web 2.0 world.

“People flocked to put their videos and photos on sites like YouTube and Facebook, and those sites now control an astonishing percentage of our digital content. Corporate ads are slapped on personal videos. Privately shared content is taken down due to bogus copyright claims. Sharing has become synonymous with forsaking one’s right to manage one’s own content,” the company says.

LittleShoot could certainly shake things up, and given how long Limewire has managed to survive, I wouldn’t bet against it being a new disruptive force in p2p file sharing with some staying power.

You'll be able to ask questions (the kind Google can answer, of course; someone else will have to tell you if those pants make you look fat) and get speedy search results returned from the web or your own address book.

The voice recordings from the application will be sent to Google's servers for processing "in the cloud." Given the size of Google's infrastructure and its ability to transfer gargantuan amounts of data, it may have the advantage over existing voice-driven search apps such as Yahoo's oneSearch. Google execs seem hesitant to quantify the accuracy of the voice recognition software, but here's hoping it at least tops some of the iPhone voice-dialers I've been playing with.

You can see a sample video of Googlers testing the feature in the continuation of this post.

Removing unneeded text from a text document can be a speedy or slow process. It’s relatively easy if the text that has to be removed is not linked to other text that should not be removed, say paragraphs of text. It becomes difficulty if the text that should be removed is merged with text that should say. One classic example is a html link list. Extracting only the urls of the links would mean to cut the beginning html tags and the end tags from the text document which would mean some work in a text editor. The find replace function could be helpful but it still means a time consuming process.

Text Trimmer (via Shell City) is a text editing tool that has been designed for that purpose. It comes with different modes that can be used to easily remove text from documents. It makes use of two modes Block and Mass that can remove unneeded text from documents easily.

The Block mode can be used to mark a block of text in a text document that can be removed, copied or moved. It would for instance be possible to remove the first 20 characters of text from every line in the document which is not doable in normal text editors.

Text Trimmer can do that with just a few clicks. The combination [ALT Left-Mouse Click] selects the upper left starting point for the block, the next use of the combination selects the lower right end point. Everything in between will be marked by the software program.

The Mass mode on the other hand is rule based which means it can be used to mark blocks based on rules defined by the user. It is for instance possible to mark all lines starting, showing or ending with the < char or trim all text from the beginning to a certain character.

The operations are easily accessible and it usually takes only a few seconds to define the text that should be trimmed and remove it from the document. Text Trimmer is a portable software for Windows.

We’re in the final 72 hours of the presidential campaign in the US, which many in the press and the blog space regard as one of the most contentious and captivating of any in recent history.

Yes, now is when fevers climb; voters arrange their car pools; a torrent of advertisements floods the ocean of marketing already in play; law ornaments stand tallest; and nerves tremble and fray. Which we think makes this the ideal time to do a final tally of all the sites, services, highlights and memories that have made this the most socially involved election in a generation.

Where better to start than thick in the viral realm of the social media space? Web video has play a key role in the national political conversation, as we all recognize. I’ve said several times that this is in fact the YouTube election. That position is only solidified with activities like YouTube’s VideoYourVote experiment.

What’s more, we’ve seen highlights from SNL and beyond that will make you laugh, cry, grimace, and fume. And it just so happens that Senator John McCain paid a visit to NBC’s New York studios this weekend to cap both campaigns’ scripted comedy trail. Here is a clip from last night’s show.

Keep in mind, humor is far from finished in this final stretch of the election. Comedy Central plans to infuse its Indecision2008 website with Meebo’s chat service to allow for live blogging and live conversation during the entire stretch of November 4. How’s that for awesome?

Now, if you’d like to spend some time away from humor and instead debate the political slant of various video clips from recent history as it pertains to the candidates and their policies, TubeTheVote may well be the place for you. It’s a content sieve with some visual sparkle. Interesting indeed.

It’s quite well known to anyone whose paid a visit to Twitter in the past two months that the microblogging extraordinaire has paid special attention to all things to do with US politics. More recently, however, the act of voting and all it entails in polling centers across the country is more or less Topic Numero Uno. For more on that matter, there is really only one Twitter-powered engine to consult with: TwitterVoteReport. Give it a look-see!

Naturally, campaign fodder in the social media space has stirred a massive amount of debate on all sides of the proverbial aisle. For those who live for Red vs. Blue, Repubican vs. Democrat vs. Independent, and the myriad other topics that whet the palates of armchair pundits everywhere, we assembled for you a collection of sites open for political debate.

Want to send John McCain, Barack Obama, or even George W. Bush a message? A simple service called What Would You Say To The President is open for submissions. On the other hand, if you want to broadcast to the world which side you support, be it Obama-Biden, McCain-Palin, or even former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, a fictional Schwarzenneger-Bloomberg ticket, or “Cthulthu,” there is WhyWeVote.org to spend a moment with.

SocialMedian, a social news service we’ve talked about a number of times in months past, has put together an Election 2008 center in association with The Washington Post to keep a close eye on the social media world during the final 3 days of the campaign. To call it a gem is to simply scratch the surface what it delivers.

Speaking of social and the sharing happening online, Google introduced a Power Readers in Politics feature for users of its Google Reader RSS aggregator. It tracks things tossed into the Shared Items firehose by the presidential campaigns as well bloggers and journalists like Arianna Huffington and Patrick Ruffini.

We recently made a note of the fact that Obama-related content is shared far more often than anything to do with McCain. What do you think of that, huh? Maybe it’s got a teensy bit to do with that Obama iPhone application launched some weeks back. Then again, maybe not.

You’ve seen plenty of political ads in the last year or two. A great number of them are attack ads. So, in the spirit of negative politics, why not make your own? Attack Ad Generator makes it happen.

Fans of Al Gore, particularly younger folks, may also be fans of Current TV, the publicly-influenced cable network that features content produced by Joe Filmographer whose focus might be political, artistic, activist, or otherwise. Suffice it to say that Current TV will be involving itself closely with the social sphere on the Web on Election Day. Keep those eyes peeled!

Do you live in California? Do you plan to vote? Are you aware of Proposition 8? Well, in case you need to catch up on what it’s all about it, we gathered 10 resources intended to help folks learn more about the yes/no proposal.

In case all these attractions here didn’t quite hit the spot for you, perhaps the FCC vote over 700MHz white space that Google, Microsoft, Dell, HP and others are clamoring for will grab your attention. Why? Because it’s set to happen on Election Day. Good idea? Bad idea? You decide.

Finally, we get back to the basics and ask: are you registered? If so, you can still revisit some of the places we suggested for information about registration and preparing oneself for the big day. And if after consulting all of the abovementioned items, you’re still not so sure which way to lean when you step into the voting booth, take a peek at some of the websites highlighted recently for speedy education on the candidates and their positions. There’s tons of stuff to consider. Happy voting!

iPhone users can officially grab free WiFi at thousands of AT&T hotspots around the United States. In order to get the WiFi access you’ll need to enter in your phone number once you’re connected to a hotspot, and then AT&T will send you a link via text message containing the URL needed to start using the service. That URL will be valid for up to 24-hours, which is kind of AT&T’s way of preventing people from trying to share the free WiFi access.

Walmart is getting very aggressive in the music arena by dropping prices on many tracks down to 74 cents, and then expanding the service to work with Mac and Linux. I have a feeling they will be attracting a lot of new users with these significantly lower prices.

The online storage service provider has come out with an application for the prized iPhone. The app would enable its users to access data stored in their Box.net accounts.

The service lets users benefit from 1GB of online storage and can transfer files with up to 25 MB limit on each. Coming with no prize tags the application can be downloaded via the App Store, this is one app users must have been looking out for in order to access data using the iPhone.

This is going to add some extra space without additional weight to your device as users can view videos, documents, images, etc directly from their Box.net account. It gives you that speedy edge, as it lets you upload snaps you take from your device to the account without affecting over all performance. Plus it operates real time, meaning if a bunch of files are added to your shared folder, you are instantly notified and can view it there and then.

Box.net app brings quite a lot of advantages to its users, the foremost being one of providing its users to access data anytime anywhere using the iPhone. Sharing images, music, etc with friends turns out to be easy as it eliminates the task of attaching files to the email; which usually have a smaller file size limit and can be a bit on the slow side.

The app is definitely in for the big run and being the first of its kind it has made a head start before any similar service plans to enter. Handy, fast and effective, that’s all positive to side with the app.

I just stumbled across this review part in the drafts folder. As I recently wondered myself about StyleTap performance, I decided to run it even though it is now one year old…

In the last installations of our StyleTap review, we looked at what StyleTap could do. This part focuses on something entirely different…how fast is StyleTap compared to a real handheld?

Palm OS handheld speeds usually get measured via Speedy, which is a very popular(and fast…30secs max per test) benchmark that gives pretty accurate data. At the first glance, my 400MhZ ipaq is about as fast as a classic 144MhZ Tungsten T:

However, comparing the benchmark details shows that the ipaq is much slower Graphics-wise, while it beats the TT hands down in memory and CPU-related tests:

PalmPi reports a calculation time of just seconds, which is a record value never ever seen before on a Palm OS handheld. Our sister site TamsPalm has loads of PalmPi results - visit them there for further comparison!

Accessing SD cards is really fast. The values below are much higher than the ones the memory card scored in real Palm handhelds - apparently, the ipaq’s highspeed SD card subsystem speeds up VfsMark to new heights.

Overall, StyleTap’s emulator window could be the fastest Palm OS handheld ever - if it didn’t have the huge bottleneck in the graphics routines. As already shown in previous parts of the review, games suffer badly from this. Nevertheless, StyleTap is more than fast enough for productivity applications…
