Let’s say for example that you want to write for us here at MakeUseOf (and why wouldn’t you want to?  We’ll pay you with all the money, beer and fast cars you can handle!  Er, well….no, not really).   So, as editor I go through approximately 7-10 applications a day so over the course of a week, that can stack up quite a bit.   We don’t like to keep people guessing over whether or not we’ve received their application so it’s good to set up a “thank you we have your application, we’ll get back to you soon” auto-responder email which is sent out as soon as their application hits our inbox.

So here’s how you would set it up, using Gmail’s new filter.

• First write your autoresponder message in a blank email window in Gmail.  Then save your message as a “canned response”.  I briefly covered how to do this a while back.   You can now discard your email window and go back to your inbox.
• Go to “settings” in the top right hand corner of Gmail, then to the “filters” sub-tab.   Scroll right down to the bottom to “create a new filter”
• This then brings up the “create a filter” section.   This is the important part.   Make sure everything in this section is BLANK except for the “to:” section.   In this section, put in the email address that the autoresponder message should acknowledge all replies to.   In this case, I have put our applications email address post4us@makeuseof.com which means that whenever an email arrives to that address, the autoresponder email will automatically kick in and send itself out.   Then click “next step”



• We’re almost done.  The last and final screen asks you to “choose an action”.   This is where you tell it to choose the canned response.    So….tick “send canned response” and drop down the menu to choose the correct canned response.    Then click “create filter”.

That is it. Now everytime someone emails an application to that email address, they will get an autoresponder message (or “canned response” as Gmail likes to call them).    You can do the same too for your blog, your company, your club, your school and much more.   If your inbox is overflowing and people are complaining that your email response times suck, then set up an autoresponder message to at least confirm that “you have received their message and that you’ll get back to them as soon as possible”.   OK the email is automatic, it’s impersonal and it’s bland - but hey it’s a response! You won’t even know the email has gone out as it’s all done in the background.

Don't be shy about letting us know how you'd like to see the tool evolve.  We'd like to make it both broader (supporting more Suite apps) and deeper (offering richer functionality and more refinements).  A few ideas we're kicking around:

• Support containers (sub-tabs, accordions, etc.) that would make it easy to provide more content within a single panel
• Offer better localization/auto-layout (so that a tab could be switched from English to German to Japanese on the fly; this is essential if we're to use Configurator to create content that ships in the box)
• Include more widgets that can be dragged in (e.g. a foreground/background color indicator/selector like the one at the bottom of the PS toolbar)

Apple could release an $800 netbook in 2009, Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster told investors Tuesday. Munster is just the latest advising the Cupertino, Calif. computer maker to offer an inexpensive laptop.

Although CEO Steve Jobs has poo-poohed talk of a netbook, dismissing the growing trend as just a “nascent market,” Munster believes Apple has the perfect platform: the MacBook Air.

In a note to clients, the Apple watcher said Apple could release an 11-inch version of its MacBook Air notebook and sell the unit for between $800 to $1,000.

Monday, Apple’s share price jumped 12 percent boosted by analyst opinion that sales of MacBooks could overcome any drop in demand for Mac desktops or iPods.

In spite of talk by some, such as Bernstein Research’s Toni Sacconaghi, that Apple must introduce a lower-priced product to meet the demands of the depressed economy, Munster said Apple is selling more $1,200 aluminum MacBooks than its $999 white plastic entry models.

Munster also suggested Apple could offer a sub-$199 iPhone without 3G or GPS. As competition from RIM and others heats up in the smartphone market, Apple needs to follow its iPod strategy, offering several tiers of iPhones, the Piper Jaffray analyst wrote.

As the December fiscal quarter nears, Apple may announce the iPhone will be available in 73 countries by the end of the year with 989 million worldwide subscribers, according to Munster.

"Here's something that is sort of under the radar: evidently a company called Mobileyes has teamed up with various local news networks to release customized live Traffic cam apps. Available for for WM Pro and Standard devices, you can download the app for your region and then select via various sub-menus locality and specific highways."

Now this is a handy application. I remember when I was a kid we use to watch this mythical box called the TV that would show us pictures from various "eyes in the sky" so my parents could see how traffic was looking on our always backed up highways. Now you can pretty much do the exact same thing from your phone and a few traffic cams making the days of helicopters recording traffic a thing of the past.
