The fund which was announced earlier this year at f8, gives developers an opportunity to receive funding for their application ideas. A large portion of these applications have already been developed but need more resources to fully execute their ideas. The winners of the last round were CourseFeed by Classtop, GoalCamp, HotBerry, J2Play, LuckyCal, MyListo, Podclass, Trazzler, and Zimride Carpool App.

Back in September I posted that the second fbFund competition was underway. One winner, SocialFly, had a pretty slick CRM system. I’m hoping to see at least a few new useful applications this time around when the winners are announced next week. Congratulations to all the fbFund applicants that have receive their notification of winning this round!

It’s not clear whether Microsoft intends to fix the flaw next week.

On Thursday, Microsoft revised a security advisory it first posted April 19 about a bug in Windows XP, Vista, Server 2003 and Server 2008 that could be exploited to gain additional privileges on vulnerable machines. “Exploit code has been published on the Internet for the vulnerability addressed by this advisory,” confirmed Bill Sisk, a communications manager at Microsoft’s Security Response Center in a post to the MSRC blog.

The vulnerability has a convoluted history.

In late March, Argentinean security researcher Cesar Cerrudo announced he had found a bug that could let attackers bypass some of the security schemes in the newest versions of the operating system, including Windows Server 2008. At the time, Sick called Cerrudo’s bug a “design flaw” rather than a vulnerability, and downplayed the threat.

In an interview the following day with German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Zuckerberg suggested that monetization is still not a core focus at Facebook. Why? Well aside from the fact that the company has millions of dollars in the bank it just isn’t important to them currently. According to Zuckerberg, “In three years from now we have to figure out what the optimum model is. But that is not our primary focus today.”

One other interesting note that Zuckerberg makes is that he believes social networks could cannibalize e-mail. This only leads me to wonder why on earth the company hasn’t come up with a better messaging system. I receive an increasing number of messages on Facebook and it only becomes more challenging to respond to. Ultimately I think they’ll resolve this problem eventually but I surely hope it comes sooner rather than later.

One final interesting component of Zuckerberg’s interview with the German newspaper was in response to a question regarding his business relationship with Sheryl Sandberg. He states, “She is an excellent manager. She is very good in building our international organization. I’m focused on the direction of the company, especially of the product development, and the overall strategy.”

Many interpreted that to be an insult to Sandberg. Others claim that it was a poorly translated statement. I’m not quite sure how you can screw up the translation when the interview was in English. Anyways, I’ll leave readers to judge what Zuckerberg meant by this statement. For the time being, don’t expect Facebook to announce any revolutionary monetization services … they’re focused on growth.

Other social networks such as Facebook and MySpace have already been there almost a month ago. It may be because of the fact that Orkut is very popular in Brazil and iPhone became available there just last week. So if we see that way, the release is not that late at all.

We have to confess we weren't familiar with the boards until today. Now that we've taken a look, we think we can see both why AOL is willing to ditch the feature, and why some users are so passionate about it.

This is a pretty primitive Web 1.0 chat board, one that's long been eclipsed by social networks and the like (indeed, there are plenty of ads on the boards urging people to check out Bebo.com, AOL's very expensive attempt to get into social networks). But it's also the kind of thing that makes the Internet appealing to so many people -- it's a place for them to talk about whatever they want to, whether it's dress patterns or racist rants. And one man's antiquated forum is someone else's favorite thing on the Web. Here's some of the feedback we've gotten today:

Please don't remove the Message Boards. It is a good way to discuss certain topics with other people who are not in the same area of the country as you are. I think removing them would be a mistake. Thanks

AOL message boards are valuable communities to those who participate in them. Just one of the boards I participate on is a super source of knowledge and comraderie. It started out as being a meeting place for like minded individuals interested in saving money and living a more frugal lifestyle but has become SO much more than that. I have actually met many of the posters from this board - we have taken trips together and thrown a wedding for someone. There are literally hundreds of posters. Any question I need a quick answer to I can post there and know that someone will very shortly give me some usable information - no matter what the topic. I will be lost online without this forum.

You say that there is nothing worth saving on this list, but I ask, without all this, what is left of AOL, and why would anyone have any reason to use them at all? I know that I won't, and AOL will go the way of the dinosaur.

And since you mentioned it, I know this is supposed to be anonymous, but if AOL is going to axe us, can anyone say where we can go to get another message board similarly formatted? The yahoo groups are way more cumbersome and difficult to navigate picture through, so they don't really work for us. I know about a thousand people from several different boards that will soon be looking for a new home.

With the MILLIONS of Baby Boomers out there, what are you leaving for us if you take the AOL Message Boards. We have a community there and have had for well over 10 years. We have had live face-to-face reunions to meet each other in person so we're like a real family.
If I can't have AOL Message Boards, I don't need AOL at all and I'm sure many of the rest feel the same way. Baby Boomer Chat is a member-managed Board...your staff doesn't have to do a thing to cause them more work so please think of us aging Boomers who have a meeting place from all over the United States before you make the decision to take it away.

Before I say anything else, I’d like to apologize for the lack of posts for the past couple of months on a regular basis.. Simply put you’d not want to be in a situation I am in right now.. Screwed up college life, and personal life to a smaller extent, has made things a lot difficult for me..

I have become a lot more busier at college, after becoming the Vice President of the department which has added a whole new range of activities I am supposed to be doing.. Added to that, I have also been selected by Microsoft to become a Microsoft Student Partner on campus, wherein am expected to conduct technical sessions and other seminars on a regular basis.

Combine these two responsibilities with the bigger and more important responsibility that is of a student, things are kind of messed up for me at the moment.. The past month has gone completely in preparations for a major event in college, and am tired and exhausted while I leave for Goa today to attend a training program of sorts to be organized by Microsoft.

Once I come back, its a hectic week after that.. I am not making excuses here.. I just want to keep you guys in the loop on what’s happening over at dailyApps. Also to an extent I have hit the writers block, and whenever I sit down to write something the words simply don’t come out..

I cannot say when exactly dailyApps will come alive again, because College has got a lot busier than it ever was.. For me and my family my education and studies remains the primary concern, so its only natural I feel that blogging will suffer.. But trust me, I don’t like all this either.. I miss blogging daily on dailyApps, I miss reading your friendly and useful comments and I can’t wait to get back on the ship.

Hopefully in the coming weeks everything should be sorted out, and things should be back to normal.. Till then if you have any suggestions for me on how to manage time effectively I am all ears..

After all I’m just 19 and I have never before carried so much of responsibilities.. I am determined to make things work, which means you will see new posts on a regular basis pretty soon, and dailyApps will be the same active blog it was before.

The company, which is winnowing down its properties to improve its financial performance, published a notice last week that it's closing its AOL Journals blog site as well as its Hometown/FTP site for hosting Web pages on October 31. And now it's begun sending users notices that it's time to move.

AOL set up a partnership with Google's Blogger.com so that people can migrate their blogs, and Jack Krupansky is one user who made the move successfully. "It was mostly painless since I already have a Google account and a number of Blogger blogs," he said in a blog posting. He did have to manually republish all the old blogs, though.

Krupansky also quoted a reminder letter AOL sent him:

Dear AOL Journals user,

As we wrote in an e-mail on Sept. 30, AOL(R) Journals will permanently shut down on Oct. 31. It's never an easy decision to shut down a feature, especially one like AOL Journals that some of our members have used for a long time. But with a decline in Journals usage, we have to look carefully at all of AOL's features to make sure we're providing as much value to our members as possible.

Though we know this might be an inconvenience, the good news is that we've partnered with Blogger.com to provide a smooth transition for your journal. Blogger is a free service from Google that makes it easy to share your thoughts with friends and the world. Blogger supports most of the features you've come to expect from AOL Journals, and it's easy to get started. If you wish to transfer your journal to Blogger, they will move your posts, comments and photos to your new blog on their service. When you're ready, go to this link to get started.

Remember, it's very important to save your Journals content before Oct. 31. If you choose not to move to Blogger, you'll need to save your information manually (for example, by copying and pasting its contents into a word processor).

AOL didn't arrange such a smooth transition for the Hometown service. "Unfortunately, we're not able to offer a replacement Web hosting option at this time. If you go to AOL Search and search for "Web Hosting," you will find reviews of different services and viable options," the company said, and members need to manually download their files stored at the site.

A week ago, a developer tried to send me an app called iDontCrash to host. Being curious, and a developer myself, I asked a few questions about this app before hosting it. The answers proved to me that it is total fraud on the community. It should be called iDontWork or iAmFake. This app gave me hours of enjoyment while we were picking it apart. In short, do not trust this app or its developer Brandon Rose. It is upsetting when someone tries to harm our community, therefore, I decided to post all about this app and its pseudo developer.

What is iDontCrash? It is nothing. A fake app not even built for iPhone that does nothing but give you, the hopeful user, false hopes.
